Topic: Golf Talk / The worst weather you've played in

Well, this is really easy!! Last December I was on a cruise ship heading to Antarctica, and one of the ports of call was Stanley in the Falkland Islands. Two other intrepid passengers and I chose to swing the sticks there.

It was not what you would call a resort course! The clubhouse was a weatherboard building, but being closed we did not see inside. Beside the clubhouse was a lean-too, that housed a tractor with an attached slasher. I think they must have lost the keys to it in the long grass, the day they bought it!

Although it was extremely cold. the sun was shining as we started on the first. Halfway through the second, a force ten gale arrived, bringing with it, sideways rain. We scurried back to the tractor shed and waited for some better weather. Of course we were soaked, but about 20 minutes later, the sun came out and it was quite pleasant again.

But not for long! While we were on the fourth green, we encountered sleet! Then more gale force wind, followed by sunshine! Two holes of good conditions, then holy geez!! It started snowing!! Not enough to make a snowman, but snowing all the same!

We were laughing our heads off, saying that we had seen it all!! But wait, there’s more!! It bloody hailed!! Then fine again, but our four hours were up and our Land Rover arrived to pick us up as we walked off the 12th green.

But, playing on the most southern golf course in the world …. BRILLIANT! If you ever have the chance, just do it and I hope the weather is the same for you! ‘Cause, we loved every minute of it!!

Topic: Golf Talk / Handicapping system

Hi Digga, if you are still looking at the forums, here is my foolproof and cheatproof handicapping system that you can use for players without a handicap at social events.
For Stableford events, I also have it as an Excel programme that I can email to you. I just need a card from the course that has the index so that I can set it up for a particular course.

You can email me at wonderwilf at hotmail dot com

Wilfway Social Handicapping Method
For Stroke & Stableford Events
_
Each player’s card is marked on his score for the day in this method.

A par, birdie or better attracts zero handicap points.
A bogie attracts 1 handicap point.
A double bogie or worse attracts 2 handicap points.
A maximum of 27 points is allotted.

If a player scores 18 double bogies or worse (36 points), the maximum handicap of 27 is allotted.

A player scoring 2 birdies (0 points), 4 pars (0 points), 5 bogies (5 points) and 7 double bogies or worse (14 points) ends up with a handicap of 19.

A player scoring 3 pars (0 points), 12 bogies (12 points) and 3 double bogies or worse (6 points) ends up with a handicap of 18.

A player scoring 1 par (0 points), 5 bogies (5 points) and 12 double bogies or worse (24 points) ends up with 29 points or a handicap of 27.

The single stableford points are then calculated in the normal way.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Feet, Hips or shoulders?

OK, Guru, which is more important to have pointing in the direction of flight? Before you say all three, feet, hips and shoulders need to be parallel, my problem is that with a normal stance, all three are different. This is due to a back operation where the major back muscle was over lapped to give me more support, but it also turns my trunk to the left.

If I put my shoulders in the direction of flight, my left foot is around 5 inches forward of parallel and conversely, feet straight give my shoulders about an 8 degree turn to the left. I have tried to choose one of the three but it has given me an inconclusive result. Maybe I should call in on Bob Jane T Marts for a wheel alignment!!

So if you can suggest which part of my body is more important to aim with, I’ll try to set up that way.

Topic: Golf Talk / Corporate Day - Help Please

I got sick of the cheats who knew how to work the Callaway System so that they could get a big handicap, so I “invented” my own system which is “uncheatable”. It is very simple and doesnt take tong to work out.

I have been using it for the last 12 years for the 80 odd social players that compete in my annual event. I now have it on an MS Excel programme which speeds it up considerably and also works out the stableford points.

Topic: Golf Talk / best value golf you have had

The year 1992….. The place Indian Oaks Golf Club near Fort Worth/Dallas Texas…...

A Texan I met took me for a game at his club. It is a really nice track, with no real dangers other than the odd critter! After the game, you return to the clubhouse for a hamburger and a lemonade, which is part of the deal. Total cost for 18 holes with a cart, burger and drink …........ $5.00. I assume that this was a members and guest deal, otherwise they would go broke really quickly!!

Just checked it out on the net. Wow! The price is nearly three times that now!! It costs a massive $14 with cart, during the week for a non member!!

You may remain seated Brett!

There are four versions of the Cobra ss370 and any that have the word “unlimited” on the sole plate are illegal after 1st Jan 08.

They come under the brand name “Acushnet Company” and the only legal ss370 is the version 3 which has the word “Tour” on the sole plate.

Topic: Sports Talk / Johnsy, so what?

OK csshugg, time for a reality check!

Laws are made to be adhered to whether YOU like it or not!! Cigerettes and alcohol are legal for persons over the legal age. End of story whether you like it or not! If you choose to smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol you are NOT breaking the law.

If you are driving under the influence of alcohol, you are breaking the law and suffer the concequences. If you cause injury or death by being under the influence of alcohol, the law of the land deals the penalty. I have spent 31 years as an emergency worker, so I have seen more than my share of trauma caused by alcohol and drugs. So don’t you little pill pushing upstarts try to tell me about the differences between drugs and alcohol. (And cigarettes and coffee)

If you cause domestic or any other violence you are breaking the law, whether you are influenced by alcohol or drugs.

It is up to the judicial system to deal with offenders.

So to csshugg and all the other defenders of illegal drug use, whether recreational or performance enhancing or as in the NRL “monster making”, take a trip to Bali or Thailand and send us law abiding citizens a wave on the six o’clock news from your cell and then define twit!!

Whether you like it or not, coffee, tea, cigarettes and alcohol are LEGAL. Drugs are NOT!

Well, I admit to taking coke and ice, but only with bourbon! (As you can see from my avatar!) I used to partake of ciggies, but have proudly given them up! I see what you are getting at, admin, as Badds.com would say “let him without sin, chuck the rocks”!! But hey, illegal, mind destroying, performance enhancing drugs have no place in sport!

And I’m not thinking Johns is the only one! There would be more than half, simply because that is the culture of the age group. Johns, just like any bad egg, is only saying “whoops” because he got caught!! Do you think he would admit to being a drug cheat otherwise? The same as all of the other sportspersons that haven’t been caught yet.

Leave him alone!!! You’ve gotta be kidding!! Johns is lying, cheating, arsehole! Even in the interview, anyone could see that he was either spaced out or drunk as a monkey! This guy has accepted the adulation of his hoards of fans, along with the medals, where he had no right to them. But what is worse, he has shown kids that you can become a superstar by cheating and lying.

Johns should be stripped of everything that he has ever been awarded. The Newcastle Club and the NRL should be ashamed of themselves and have a lot to answer for, as from what is now being made public, it has been common knowledge that he has been on the juice for 10 years! Drug testing in the NRL is a farce, if a player can get away with it for ten years! Or here is more proof that the NSW stars are protected!

Today’s biggest threat is supposed to be terrorism. Garbage!! The destruction of our youth by drug taking is a far bigger threat. The use of drugs is the cause of most of the crime committed in today’s world, either to get money to buy it or bash or murder someone because they thing they should!

Hi muntz, another job well done!! And I’m smiling pretty wide in third place!! Go Badds.com and wobbly swing Jim!!!

An adjustment required on the score, not that it matters really. The PGA page has adjusted Luke Donald’s score to 68 – 75, making him one over par. Dunno how they did this but they also had Appleby’s wrong in the early hours this morning. They had him at even for the second round!!

Again—You’re the man, muntz !!

I have been refused by Australia Post, which I found pretty confusing, as they don’t have a problem delivering clubs from overseas! So, I persisted and tried a different Post Office and they didn’t mind at all! I guess it depends how much fuel you use before you find the right one. I suggest you try the small Post Offices that are in shopping centres.

Topic: Golf Talk / Triple Open winner Karrie Webb to defend title

Queenslanders have been invaded by “Mexicans” for many years, and if the in-form Mexican, Lorena Ochoa, is a starter, there is a big chance that Karrie Webb will feel the heat. Lorena is a genuine contender, and will be on top of the list for a long time.
