I had a pair of M Frames which my beloved dog decided to eat so I bought a cheaper pair of SunDogs for golf, I kept finding even with the glasses on my eyes were getting sore on sunny days.

I decided to buy some Oakleys off Ebay and ever since no more sore eyes, I will never own a cheap pair of glasses again as the lenses and comfort can’t be matched.

Cliff just wanted to clarify this as it is something I have never tried, do you set your left hand in a fairly neutral position and then just try and wrap your left thumb around the club so it is towards the back of the club?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Grip getting too strong

I am trying to get my grip from a strong, both hands turned to the right under the club (espcially with the driver) to a more neutral grip. I have had a strong grip for many years and I just can’t seem to get my hands to stay in a more neutral position. Does anyone have any drills or tips to help bed this in?

I am having some common problems a strong grip causes, low ball flight with either a hook or a block to the right and feel it is mainly my grip causing this.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as it’s driving me nuts. I setup neutral but then out of habit my hands seem to work their way round to the right – seeing 3-4 knuckles on my left hand. I can’t get the feel of having my hands weaker.

I have got a Taylormade R580xd 9.5 with original stiff shaft. The original stiff shaft feels like a regular as it is pretty whippy, which is the reason I no longer use it as it’s too flexiable for my swing. Have spoken to a few people in retail and these are known as pretty soft shafts so you might not want the regular. Let me know if you are interested at adam.hardie@gmail.com

Lessons for sure, I was about to buy a new driver but thought I would spend some time fixing up my swing by having lessons, wow what a difference. I am hitting the drives so much straighter and higher don’t think I need the new one anymore.

Lessons are my vote as long as you get the right coach!

I am in Perth and I know that it is banned in all parks unless a sign states otherwise, there is a spot along the river near Pt Walter that used to be open for golf, ie there was a sign saying “Golfing Permitted” and I am sure there are a few other places but I would be carefull if you were hitting around at your local park.

Yes, I have tried other brands but always ended up going back to a pair of Oakleys.

It’s hard to compare, in this day of more advanced technology and science, different balls, clubs, nutrition, weight training and everything else that goes with the game these days.

Would have been interesting to compare the 2 at when they were younger with the same clubs and balls where it was more natural talent than anything else.

I was once caddying for a mate who was going quite well in the second round of the tournament when he asked me for his 60’ Wedge to chip from beside the green, by mistake I took out the 52’ and he ended up chipping into the bunker on the other side of the green.

He learn’t a valuable lesson that day! Whooooops.

I hate playing in the rain, don’t get me wrong I will still play but I just don’t find it as enjoyable. Good thing I live in WA where we don’t really know what rain is most of the year. I don’t think I have ever played where it has rained for a whole game, even in the middle of winter.

I have the Prolaunch Blue in stiff and I find it a little too firm for me, swing at around 105-110. A mate has the Prolaunch Red in stiff and it seems softer, suits me better than the shaft I have. I have used other brands in stiff and they are fine.

Just wondering if anyone has hit one of these?

Considering buying one as my old TM580 isn’t working anymore, after some swing changes I hook the ball more than I would like and the tour version is supposed to have a 3’ open setup which might suit me.

I have found that the more solid ball strikers always seem to take a divot, I guess you could say to a point that they hit down on the ball. Just make sure you are comfortable hitting the ball first and then making the divot not vice versa.

Thanks for all the replies, pretty interesting to see peoples thoughts on the matter. I think it is whatever works for the individual, some people like to hit it long and then try to score from where it ends up but others play steady golf and seems to score just as well.

The other day I played with a 70 year old still playing off single figures, not long but straight and deadly around the greens. Makes it look so easy.

I know I have to work on aspects of my game but this dreaded sport always seems to bite back, I fix up one thing and something else goes wrong. eg start hitting the driver well and I will have an off day with the putter or vice versa. One day it will all come together, I just hope it is on a comp day!!

Just curious what peoples thoughts were on getting from say around a 10 handicap to a 5.

I seem to have got stuck on 10, I vary between 9 and 10 but just can’t seem to get lower, I have tried lessons, practice and playing more but nothing seems to work.

Do people think it comes down to a mindset, natural talent or practice, some people just seem to be able to go out and shoot low regardless of how good their swing is on the day. Please share your secrets!
