Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Swing Speed Estimate

Hey dudes,

thanks for the info! I thought there may be more to it but just thought I would ask.

And yes, I meant plus roll sorry! If I was 210-220 out I would hit the 3 wood.

Cheers!

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Swing Speed Estimate

Hey guys,

Is there any way to estimate your swing speed? I have never had this measured and was wondering probably more out of curiosity than anything but thought it would probably be helpful when selecting golf balls etc. I am currently trying to decide between the pro V1 and proV1x.

I generally hit my 8 iron 140mtrs with a swing at 80-85%. 3 wood would average around 210 plus carry. I definitely go for rhythm rather than trying to smash the ball.

Any guesses? Or is there more to it than that?

Cheers!

Hey live4golf,

I too am heading to the US in about 2 months time and want to pick up some new golf gear, most notably a driver. First stop is L.A. then a 6 destination trek around to New York then finish off in London. Would you recommend:

  • buying in LA then shipping to AUS or carrying it around the country with me (including planes)
  • By in New York and send to AUS
  • Buy in New York and carry to London then home

cheers!

Topic: Golf Equipment / 2008 Hot List

the hotlist is about as accurate as the weekly weathermans prediction, callaway ft-i and ft-5 rated gold , give me a break you can tell who pays alot of advertising with them .

If you were the Editor – Which clubs would be gold in your books?

Agree a few great clubs were not even mentioned (Nickent Driver?)

Is that a rhetorical question? :P

Never played one but what I hear and read they are very highly regarded.

I understand that quite a few pro’s use them even though they are contracted to other companies.

Topic: Golf Talk / Pre-Shot Routine........

I don’t have a specific routine but it is something I am planning on developing.

Generally speaking though, i like to take a practice swing behind the ball, imagine the shot I want to play and then step up to hit. The only thing i dont and wont do is take a practice swing right next to the ball.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Titleist introduces four new iron models

Yep, I agree that the Z design looks a bit tacky. But I suppose there are only so many ways to design a forged blade.

Don’t like the look of the AP1 either to be honest. I am sure they play nicely though.

I hear the AD-333 is also a great ball at a good price. Haven’t tried one myself but I used to use the Srixon hi-spin and really like it.

I stocked up big time on U-tri Tours recently for $30 dozen brand new so I am sweet for the time being.

Gripping down a bit on the club should help as well is you want to take a full swing

Topic: Golf Talk / Gripping Down

Hey guys,

Does any of you guys find that you have more accuracy, consitancy and better impact when gripping down on your clubs? I am at the stage now where I am gripping down on all shots because of the added confdence it gives me. I can’t notice much of a change in distance either yet ball flight seems greatly improved. I dont grip down much, maybe 1/2-1 inch max.

Could it be that my clubs are too long? from memory I think my clubs were made 1 inch longer than standard….I am 6’ tall.

Cheers!

Topic: Golf Equipment / Etonic Golf Shoes

I wear Etonic as well and couldn’t be happier. My money is on the fact it’s a superseeded model as well…..not to mention the filthy markup the Nike brand commands.

Buy what is most comfortable i say. You are going to be doing a lot of walking in them.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Getting Fitted Up

Hey Guys,

I am interested in upgrading to a new driver however I have no idea what my swing speed is, what shaft I need, degree of loft etc etc….and thats even before I select the brand of club!

Is there somewhere in Sydney where I can pay just to be measured up so I know what specs I need to look for?? I don’t necessarily want to buy straight away, just want to know what I need if something comes up.

Cheers!

Topic: Golf Equipment / New Irons.. havent seen many lately :(

Hey mboy,

I have currently have the same set and love them to death also. However, if i was in the market for some new irons I would be going for the Mizuno’s or the Bridgestones.

Topic: Golf Equipment / This bloody well annoys me

I am guessing they are positioning the balls on price in both markets. I don’t think it would help Vision balls by entering the market with a comparatively low price because as you know, people like to think the more you pay the better it is. The majority won’t believe a ball is as good as a Pro V1 if it is priced like a Dunlop Rock.

Of course I am in no means inferring that vision are over/under priced, just giving a marketing explanation. And of course, I could be wrong.

I think Greg Norman has made a LOT more money from his own personal business ventures then his playing and endorsement earnings. However, I am sure it was made possible through his golf earnings.

Topic: Golf Talk / Clubs in Sydney for golfers in their 20s or 30s?

Hey Burger,

It’s just a small club with about 25-30 members or so. No prerequisites-a mate of mine joined and he told me about it. I just had to pony up the membership fee ($70 which goes towards t-shirts, prize money etc..) and off I went. each round is $35 regardless of where.

The only draw back is that many games have an early start which can be pretty harsh after a night on the cans! Get to play some pretty decent courses though and the variety is always nice.

There are heaps of social clubs out there but couldn’t tell you how to find out about them sorry! The club I have joined is called Nobakes.

Topic: Golf Talk / Clubs in Sydney for golfers in their 20s or 30s?

Hi Golf Girl,

A few other courses you may want to check out are Ashlar in Blacktown, Fox Hills in Prospect, Massey Park in Concord and Carnarvon in Lidcombe. All nice and well maintained courses that are reasonably priced.

Not sure about the female ratio however I know that Ashlar had a good cadet program at one stage. I play there quite often and it’s always in good shape.

Another option is to join a social club. I joined one and we play once a week at different courses around Sydney. Great fun!

Topic: Golf Talk / Ever shot a reall great score....

But be disappointed with the way you played?

I shot my best score off the stick on Sunday (82) yet 95% of my shots to the green where either sculled or hit really thin. I didn’t hit one decent iron shot (bar chips) all day.

I guess I can take consolation in the fat that my swing was sound enough that the sculls and thin shots ended up in the general vicinity in which I was aiming. Looks like it’s back to the driving range to build up the confidence again.

a bit of a bitter sweet round I guess!

They are some nice clubs Johnny.

Personally, I would invest my money in lessons and practicing having a more consistent swing rather than spending big$$$ on new clubs and having the same inconsistent swing.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Taking your range game to the course

Hi Guys,

Thanks so much for the help. Some really great suggestions that I will certainly get into. Carey, can you pls elaborate on the 32 ball drill?

To answer your questions Spike, some of the time. As I mentioned I am still overcoming an over the top action and it tends to creep back when I hit the course which causes many of my shots to fade/cut. It doesnt get me into too much trouble but it’s just frustrating knowing that I can hit the ball much more solidly.

I think the other problem too is that I need to learn how it feels when I swing correctly, rather than doing it by sight of the aids.

Thanks again!
