Topic: What Constitutes a 'Top-Ten' Finish

If nine or fewer than nine players have a better score for the whole tournament then you have a top ten finish.

Naturally. I understand that perfectly – it makes perfect sense.

However, my question is …

Post of the year right here.

Clearly you didn’t understand perfectly, which is why everyone was giving you a hard time.

Topic: What Constitutes a 'Top-Ten' Finish

I had no idea that people could misunderstand something so basic.
By your perverse criteria, I’d say you’ve got an IQ in the world’s top 200

Well, that’s it for me – I’m off.

I asked for views to form a consensus and added something to the discussion in doing so.

Some clearly have difficulty in offering their own take and are moved to offer smart-arsed critisism by way of personal asides instead.

I see so much of that garbage here. Why can’t some individuals see there is always going to be a divergance of views and simply accept that?

I think that that was irony, not criticism. A very clever irony actually.

Perverse is a comment on the criteria, not a personal observation.

Nothing worth getting in a knot over.

Member of the South East Queensland Golf Group
LEARN then PERFORM – Geoff Mangum

If he can’t figure out the top ten, which has been amply answered in the thread, i seriously doubt his ability to utilize “clever irony”.

see ya Taarynot. You are probably better off playing a game of Guess Who where you can’t mess up who wins. You not very bright are you?

This is the question that ‘bugs’ me – nobody can seem to answer.

The very first response on this was the correct answer. And 20 posts later you still don’t get it?
Are you seriously suggesting that if someone has 40 points, then 20 players have 39 and you have 38 that you have somehow come third? The placings are ALWAYS based on people, not scores.
Imagine you are in a marathon and there are 500 people in it who all have exactly the same time. You come in 3 hours later. Do you give yourself a silver medal?

You don’t like people telling you the facts? There is no ‘view’ to finishing 11th when 10 blokes have a score of 1 better than you, just reality.

Take your bat and ball then.

I think they’re always ‘banging on about it in the media’ because the rankings are based on money earnt. You earn more finishing top 10. Regardless of the actual score. The top ten cheques climb the ladder. For your own self esteem you finished 2nd best score but you would still be 11th on the winnings/prize money. Hope that helps clarify it.

Interesting take AB.

Thanks for that.

Yeah. This is a perfect example of why the question bugs me.

It seems hardly fair when you could have the 1st (in this case) or second/third/etc best score and miss out on a top-ten finish.

They’re forever banging on about top-ten finishes in the media, but how do they calculate these criteria in the major tours?

Wow, I had no idea that people could misunderstand something so basic.

Yes you were 2nd on score.
Yes you were 11th on prize division.
If your first division on lotto and so are 20 others your still first but you may not win as much as last weeks winner.

This is not that hard. You need to get it out of your head that you had the 2nd best score if 10 blokes all finished equal but 1 better than you. You came 11th, and your score was not the 2nd best.

Even if 10 players finished equal 1st, the the next player is 11th.

I agree with Yarn on this one. i would count the number of players above me, rather than the scores above me. Actually… i dont know…the more i think about it the more you could go the other way.
you could go the top ten “places”, therefore being maybe the 30th guy in order, but equal 4th say…. or you could go by countback to get your exact position…...
I dont know ? Interesting topic…..

41st.

10th best score means nothing, it is all dependent on the amount of players above you.

Thanks Yarn.

So on that basis, I could have the third best score of the day and be 11th on the list and therefore miss out on a top-ten finish. Yes?

Anyone with the same or a different view? I did say I was looking for a concensus.

Yep you would miss out. Even if 10 players finished equal 1st, the the next player is 11th.

However, my question is ….if forty (40) guys have better scores than me and mine is equal to the tenth best of the day/tournament, do I still have a top-ten finish?

In this scenario, I could be 41st or even 60th on the list.

This is the question that ‘bugs’ me – nobody can seem to answer.

It doesn’t matter what the score is on the last day. If nine or fewer than nine players have a better score for the whole tournament then you have a top ten finish. You can tie for tenth with any number of players and it’s still top ten finish.

Go by the number of players who have a BETTER score than you.
If 9 guys have a better score, but 20 have the same as you, it’s still equal 10th.

Yeah …..,

but if forty (40) guys have better scores than me and mine is equal to the tenth best of the day, do I still have a top-ten finish? i.e. I’m forty first on the list, but still top-ten?

Just wondering.
