Topic: Golf Equipment / Wanted: Blade 1 iron!

You can have this one if you want it. Not a blade but a very slight cav back, very thin sole, no offset very much a players iron, i.e unforgiving as hell, never been hit.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Is it really a stiff shaft?

Blame the usa fork and hoe company. The first company to make steel shafts later called (ture temper).

You can have two shafts reading 240 cpm on a meter, play and feel completely different.

There are already to many rules in golf.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Is it really a stiff shaft?

Good points Nigel…

I didn’t realise it had been done. Why is there still so much variation between one company’s flex compared to another?

Why cant they all say “well 240-250 is an S flex” and mark their products accordingly? It just adds to the confusion of customers who say well I am an S in company X so I will get an S from company Y and they end up with a completely different flex.

Some dream, others DO!

It’s there shafts they can do as they want. Thats the line you will get from the companys.

Just the way it is. There is zip you can do about it.

I go with the hit it, and see what it feels like.

For the record butt cpm a shaft is just a guess at best, and will only give you a slight idea on how the shaft will play, you need to look at the whole profile, along the shaft. Plus weight toque, bend point as well.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Is it really a stiff shaft?

I agree with Tim Mega Watty. There is no set standard between companies for shaft flex. The best thing to do is get it frequency analysed and supply cpm ratings. This is the way I select all of my shafts now. In one company I could be an X, in another I am XXX. It is a pain I know and the industry should get together and try and have uniform flex ratings.

Some dream, others DO!

It was done in 97. A group got together, I know for sure one was tom wishon, I think jeff jackson was the other.I’ve got the book, can remmber the name it’s in the work shop, but as it’s over ten years old it’s way out of date

There is also the Dyancaft shaft fitting index(DSFI), it’s a pdf file which you can get of the intergeek. Which has a listing which is preety good, Jeff Jackson headed that one I belive, which is up to data for 2007, I don’t know about 2008.

There is also a shaft profiling software which you can buy, from TWGT, I own a copy which is tip top. Jerry Jr I think has designed it, with partener ship with TWGT. Which is upto date with most shafts. It was updated about 3 months ago.

Topic: Golf Talk / what club did you hit?

I love it! Australian open, I can understand, even when playing division pennant, I can understand, when playing in the Footrot Flats Country Club Saturday afternoon competition for the prize of a meat trayP>

The Footrot flats comp is actually played at the Feilding golf course, Manawatu- region New Zealand, on a friday afternoon when the milking is done (tee off after 12pm). Great little golf course. Got robbed by a couple of old farmers ($20) 18 c/h my ass, still got nearest the pin on the 10th.

For the record I just show the other players what club I hit, before they ask. Then there is no problem.

Topic: Golf Equipment / $250 fujikura shaft??!!!

If you are hitting that sort of loft to high, I would
1. find a lower lofted head that suits
2. Ball spin would be a problem, so make sure that the c.o.g is as forword a posible on that head.
3. Make that heads face a smooth as glass, to help stop spin.
4. Then fine a tip stiff shaft, with a lot of toque and high bend point, that is as light as you can control.
5. Be careful with the butt stiffiness, so you don’t lose the feeling of the shaft, at the top of the swing when you load up, so it helps keep your tempo and timing. This is what can happen if you go to stiff.
5. Find the swing weight that helps you with your on center highs.
6. Find the grip that releaxes your hands and forearms to help you release the club in simple form.

It my take weeks and months to come up with the right combo. To get this just right.

But first I always start with the right head, The head will always be king in ball flight. And always be.

Topic: Golf Equipment / $250 fujikura shaft??!!!

Okay you are right, I am wrong. Let’s just all grab off the shelf shafts, clubs and not worry about whether they fit. Obviously it is not important and you can play with any old stick. Is that the message you want to convey? Cool. Specs are not important, just play. Is that better?

We therefore don’t need clubfitters then if getting your specs right doesn’t matter? Guess you just put them out of business.

The one thing I use to get alot of, was guys rolling up, wanting the lastest and greatest shaft, and thinking they where going to turn there driver into a rocket launcher. Fact is in most cases this won’t help, and they blow a couple of hundred dollars or more. The shaft has to be very poorly fit to make a big difference.

This where fitting to head to the right spec counts the most, not the shaft. If someone is hitting to ball to high or low, the shaft is going to make bugger all of a difference. I’ve spent a lot of time fitting golfers, and how to help their game. Head first and then shaft should be seen only as a fine tuning of the ball flight, I.M.O.

AB,

Your point is all good and well, but ask yourself the question.

What has the biggest factor on ball flight.

If you had a head that fitted you perfecty for loft and all the specs c.o.g face angle etc… but a shaft that fitted to you poorly, example in your case a L flex shaft.

Or a club with a perfectly matched shaft xx flex with a head with a 20deg loft with a open face of 6 degs heaps of rearward c.o.g.

Which one would you hit the best.

The head will always be number one in ball flight.

The shaft will never bend pass the c.o.g. of the club head. So in thoery never more than a couple of degs. Or in the case of some LD lads it may lag a little through impact.

The understanding of the shafts factor in the club has moved on a bit in the last couple of years, The biggest factor the shaft has is in feel.

Also note that the shaft never buggy whips as well that is a myth, that has been done to death.

There is a difference in thinking you know what you are talking about and clear hard facts, I live my life in physic and maths. There is a great book called common sence clubfitting, it would be a great place start for you.

Don’t belive the hype. Read the facts, really learn how the golf club works. The golfer is the engine, not the shaft.

All the best Nigel.

Topic: Golf Equipment / $250 fujikura shaft??!!!

That’s not exactly true! As the shaft is the engine of the club, getting the right shaft is of critical importance!! Get the shaft wrong and no matter how good the head is, the club is not going to be producing good results! Put a substandard head on an great well fitted shaft and you will still produce shots that you can live with.

With so many shafts having so many options: kickpoints, butt stiffness, tip stiffness, flex, torque, spines etc Not just any shaft will do fine!

Some shafts do get expensive but there is a huge difference in quality in an “el cheapo” and a “top market”. Depends what your goals are as to what you are willing to spend that will be the overriding factor on value for money!

Simple math: $250 high quality clubhead on $300 designer fitted shaft with $10 grip ($560) still puts you in front of some OEM’s on the market that have lesser quality “stock” shafts.

Sometimes a good clubfitter is worth their weight in gold!

That theory is out the window. Read and learn, the head is king, loft is the biggest key in ball flight.

Topic: Golf Equipment / ClubTechnology has come to a Head

Dont believe everything you read! ;-)

I am negotiating with a proto clubhead currently that is extremely HOT and adheres to the USGA rules!

Shafts that are designed for distance producing can increase the power of any club. There are only two worth their salt on the market currently! The battle is hotting up!

Anyone who thinks technological advancements are dead is kidding themselves. Like athletes that push the envelope with drug testing, plenty of club manufacturers are finding ways to produce new and improved equipment!!

Have you been reading ads again. Rules are rules, live in the world of physics. You can not cheat the test.

Alpha make a great forgiving blade )well as forgiving as can be), low c.o.g.

There is only one reason to play blades, they look cool.

For the record muscle back and blades are the same thing. I think you guys mean cut muscle back

Topic: Golf Equipment / 3 wood for a slicer

Making me think hard Nigel, probably 20-30 degrees left ie club going outside in and not very deep divot at all. Flight is quite low and starts left of centre and if I’m lucky stays in the right fairway. Carry would be 170 then 20m run.

I had a Callaway X 15deg with regular factory steel shaft but I sold it as I couldn’t make it work. I am looking for 200m+ straight.

The problem stems from lack of hip rotation which is not getting any better with age. However I can get my draw burner driver out there 230m on a good swing with a carry of over 200m and a nice trajectory. The driver has the regular reax 50gm shaft.

I hit my Callaway X-20 steel 5 iron dead straight 160m and hold greens ok. I have a Callaway X 4 hybrid (bent to 22deg) which gives me a high trajectory 170m with only a little fade so ok into greens

Currently I have a Callaway X 19deg F/wood gives me 180m but with a more pronounced fade which makes it useless hitting into greens with no room on the left.

I am trying to fill in between the driver and 4 hybrid with one or to clubs

Don’t think a three wood is the go for you ( your ball flight sounds to low), You need more loft, try a 4 or 5 wood and see how you go, I don’t think you have the swing speed for it, also the fact you sound like you swing a little out to in, the extra lenght of a three wood is going to make life a little harder.
What you need is a second wood you can hit of the deck consistantly, not some of the time 70% of the time. Don’t be dishartend, most golfer can’t hit a 3 wood of the deck consistantly, the loft on modern three woods are just too strong, 13-14degs, try and find somthing with 16-17degs and see how you get on. Good luck with it.

For the record the next longest wood I own is a 18deg with a 1/2 deg closed face, five wood which has a lot of offset I get a good 200 meters out of that club on the deck, I might be able to hit a three wood, but I find playing on the fairway a lot easier than in the trees, don’t let your clubs handycap you..Good luck with it mate.
Cheers Nigel.

mouldy,
I’ll throw my hat in the ring here.

I need a little more info.

What does your divot look like. Head left or right in degs please, heavy or light in depth

What is your ball flight like high or low, does the ball start left and fade right, ( i’m guessing your right handed) Or straight down the target line and slice right etc.

How far do you hit the ball carry with the three wood, please don’t bulls#it me mate.

Can you hit it consistanly of the deck. What model of three wood do you have at the moment, and what’s the loft say.

Thankyou Nigel.

Nup. anzac day. I gave up.

10-15 min wait on each hole. I just got sick of waiting. The group I was in took over six hours to go round.
I like golf but waiting that long on each tee was too much, thats why I still had the card in my bag

1 over after 5 is good for me. Ended at the 19th. cheers

Had not played comp for six months, and only been at the club for 3 months before then. Hit poor in the couple of comps I played in, ended up with a hc of 24.

Start playing comp again, hit 49 points then a 81. Bingo 12hc. When the club captain taps you on the shoulder, and take you up for a chat with the h/cer. Then they drop you. Thats it.

I’m a pretty relaxed guy, I enjoy playing golf, but have been hammer a lot for been a pretty avg golfer, i’m just enjoying rubbing a couple of peoples nosses in it thats all.
