Topic: Golf Talk / Earlier Bird Catches the Ball 45 minutes. Gives enough time to play the comp fee, down a couple of schooners and get the bets on, then rush to the first with a 30 second practice putt and chip. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Merimbula Golf Club Mollymook hilltop can be a tough walk – thick kikiyu fairways and the struggle up the heartbreak hill on 17 is a nightmare – especially if you have had a bad day! Tura is probably worse – only played once, used a cart, and still thankful for that… Pambula/Merimbula is an easy walk, I don’t remember Narooma being too bad except for about the 10th up the hill? Haven’t played the others so can’t comment. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Merimbula Golf Club They have 27 holes – I don’t remember any practise facilities other than the putting green and maybe a chipping/pitching green. Just play there instead – its a nice enough coast course. Then go and play Tura Beach 5km up the road and realise how friendly Merimbula was!!! |

Topic: Rules of Golf / Casual Water/Water Damage etc I played Sunday and the course had suffered some damage after the torrential rain Saturday. A few issues came up 1) A ball was lying in casual water in a bunker – and more than 50% of the ball was covered in sandy mud. When the ball was lifted to be dropped (still inside the bunker), we assumed the ball could not be cleaned. Correct? 2) A ball ended up in a bunker – where the water had cascaded into it the day before, there were three inch deep furrows that had removed the sand and taken it down to the rocks/plastic lining below. The ball was unplayable due only to the damaged bunker – the player took a drop without penalty. The bunker was suffering casual water, and it may have effected the players back foot stance so a free drop was given. However, what should have been done? 3) Another bunker was almost a swimming pool – water up to the lip in all areas of the bunker. There was no place within the hazard that a drop could be taken with the player able to play a shot from within the bunker. The player ended up dropping the ball in the bunker standing outside the bunker to play the shot. Was the the correct thing to do? It will probably never rain again now so these will be redundant questions, but advice is appreciated! |

Topic: Sports Talk / No judd talk? Lets look at the Options Carlton – No 3 draft pick, and Josh Kennedy? They won’t trade Fev – and West Coast don’t need another dickhead in the ranks. Unlikely. They are going to remain a rabble for a few more years yet. What is Fat Lance doing next year anyway? Star in the Lalor League? Melbourne – Can they afford him? Can this list play finals next year? Norf/Bullies – Nope Richmond – Lose their best draft pick, and at least 2 youngsters. There is no way they would trade Foley. Is there? It is Richmond we are talking about Collingwood – A No 15-18 draft pick, and maybe a Leon Davis and a youngster such as Ben Reid? Maybe. If Bucks retires, salary cap isn’t that much of an issue. Bombers – no coach, an aging list, and a bunch of kids that are ok but not great. Lllllloyd and Lucas getting on, Fletch is past it, and they proved no Hird no hope this year. Hawks – a big maybe. Could have the money, definately have the list. Who they offer up could be the key… |

Topic: Golf Talk / Front 9 vs Back 9 Its easy to have a good back 9 after a horror front – you relax, realise you are no hope of getting your handicap, and you start playing golf again. My most extreme is 10-23, and I had 11-22 the other day. Worst is playing stroke hungover – a few years back in the club champs and on 1 hours sleep after an all nighter the night before, I had 40 for the front, and 55 for the back as fatigue and hangover took over |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Best Club to Join in Canberra? SJ – your spray sounded a lot like ‘waaaaaaaah’ Sounds like you need a friend. You did fail to mention where you were from, so I am guessing anywhere in Sydney or somewhere poverty stricken in the outer suburbs of Melbourne – Lalor or Thomastown perhaps? Probably a member at Southern too… mjl88 – For info, the best restaurant and bar precinct is Kingston and Manuka where you are planning on living. Ignore what the ignorant unwashed have to say, join a golf club, join a sporting team (touch, AFL, league etc) and you will discover there is more to Canberra than meets the eye. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Best Club to Join in Canberra? SJ Canberra is what you make of it. 25 minutes to everywhere, peak minute to and from work. No pollution, four seasons a year, two hours to the coast, two hours to the snow, three hours to Sydney. Which paragon of perfection do you live in? |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Cleveland XL Hi-Bore Driver Got one, stiff shaft, mid high kick point and have been using it for the last 6 or so rounds. 3 in 10 drives its brilliant long and a nice little draw, 4 in 10 its acceptable, 3 in 10 its a horrid duck hook. But the best 3 in 10 make up for it! I’ve let a few mates hit it over the last few rounds – its longer than anything else they have had in their bags, and generally straighter for them too. And yep, they are loud… |

Topic: Ask Bruce / scoring par I assume you mean a par event? Yes, if you have already used up your allocated shots (most holes you would get two), once you are going to get a minus, pick it up and speed up play for the rest of the group and the rest of the players behind you |

Topic: Sports Talk / Johnsy, so what? Gees Bloke, that’s pretty fired up. If the greatest league player I have seen is a pill popper, and the fittest and hardest runner in the AFL is an Ice addict, maybe the drugs aren’t that bad for the majority of people after all…. I’d heard rumours of Joeys drug taking for years – and I am sure he is not alone. I reckon you would struggle to find a young NRL player who hasn’t popped a pill on a night out at some point in their lives And no bloke, I am not a disco bikkie muncher, no coke or ice addict. Carlton Draught is my drug of choice… |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Best Club to Join in Canberra? MJL Federal is a good place to start if you are willing to pay the $ – noms $950, subs $1730. Its an older membership but I know a couple of under 30’s who are members there. I know last summer that they were seeking members this year as they had to let the course condition go due to a lack of water through the drought, but its still one hell of a track. The bits they let go was the 150m from tee to fairway and the rough came in a metre or two each side of the fairway – you hardly noticed. Still, if you are living in Kingston, you can easily get 9 holes in after 6pm in summer and its the most natural course in Canberra. Queanbeyan is only about 15 minutes away from Kingston and could be a good option – its a tight, tricky up hill and down kind of track – play it once before making any decision! I prefer Gungahlin Lakes over Gold Creek – I’m a member of Gungahlin Lakes – note they are both about 20 minutes away from Kingston on a weekend. Gold Creek is a LOOONG walk, Gungahlin Lakes is a more interesting layout but does have a lot of social players on weekends who can get in the way of the comp. Capital is a tight little public track where you almost need a helmet in summer, Fairbairn is very ordinary, RMC is a nice enough little 9 holer. Murrumbidgee is on the improve now the lakes are full enough again and Yowani was a top 100 rated track with some deal advertised for about $25 a week membership but I don’t know what that includes. Don’t know if that helps or hinders – all depends on what you are after. |
