If you are joining Cranbourne, I think you will find the pro there is pretty good – Mark Auhl (I think he is still there).

Otherwise, Mark Griffin at Beaconhills is excellent.

racinfarmer,

do you really know the costs involved – in Australia, that is.

Trev, if my memory serves me correct, the mornington Peninsula is not that far away from you. If you are under 40, you will not find better value than Peninsula. Failing that, you could get a damn good deal at St Andrews if you enquired, I reckon.

Brett,

Get out to Gisborne. Great course and apparently it is a pretty short drive. (insert smiley face here!)

OG,

At least while you were at your club, you could have picked up your 6 game pass and headed off for a free game at one of the other 6 clubs that are part of the deal, so not all is lost.

Yep, it is a little disappointing and those issues will need to be addressed, but with the amount of rain and the increased traffic at your course, it is to be expected to some degree.

You may also note that 9 holes are now open and the new course is opening 9 holes this weekend. Hopefully, with the influx of members and revenue, some of these drainage issues will be rectified.

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Junior Golf Membership in Melbourne

Location may be an issue, but Beaconhills has an excellent junior program.
They have junior comps on Saturday afternoons, similar to what you have talked about.

Once the kids have a handicap, they are free to play in Saturday comps.

Had a 14 year old win monthly medal last month and the club has produced some very handy junior golfers at junior state level.

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Woodlands Vs. Southern Vs. Spring Valley

Woodlands has a reputation of being a bit older and perhaps, a bit resistant to change.
Spring Valley members I have met have been friendly and from all reports, membership base is welcoming.
Sandhurst is a new club, so membership is generally younger than other clubs. Once again, those I have met have been very friendly.

Enough has been said on these boards about Southern members. Some call it "the animal farm".

In any club, there will be the odd d#@!head and you will learn to avoid them. You will generally gravitate to those members with things in common.

You will find both in all of the clubs mentioned.

Re: Sandhurst.

They have recently had a promotion whereby 400 lifetime memberships were offered for $Nil.
Normally they are $8,800 and a share is around $21,000.

They filled the 400 quota very quickly and they were knocking people back.

ATM, you would probably class Sandhurst between SV and Southerm - not as good as Woodlands.
Sandhurst should ultimately be judged on the Champions course which will open in September. It will be far better than the current North course.

And for those that like the 36 hole clubs with modern facilities, Sandhurst is worth considering.

For those that took up the $0 lifetime membership, I think it is great value. I know they picked up members from courses such as Paterson River, Southern, Beaconhills and probably many others.

Annual subs very similar to SV and Woodlands.

I have said before, if one club was prepared to offer a $0 joining fee, members would come running.
Sandhurst have done it, probably by necessity, but have increased their annual revenue by $1 million in the process.

The trick now, is to keep all those members who haven't paid the "hurt money". Will be interesting to see how many are still there in 2 years time.

Shepparton 7 years ago played behind a group in an ambrose their total handicap was .5 they shot 54 off the stick16 birdies and 1 par 1 eagle .

Its possible i saw a group do it.

But 53.5 is not always going to be a winning score in Ambrose.
More likely the group with combined 10, shoots 9 under and pips them.

Still, that is damn fine golf.

Topic: Golf Talk / Sydney Job..

Count me in as one of the "who do you know" set.
After finishing school, it was assumed i would go to uni.
I decided I wanted to work and study part time. My mother knew a woman who used to work in an accounting firm and had a "very good relationship" with her old boss.
Anyway, she gets me an interview - they offer me a trainee position and I enrol to study part time.

I have been in the accounting profession for 23 years and I think it has served me very well.

I still see my first boss from time to time and my first manager is now my business partner.

So, I thank my lucky stars that my mother knew this woman.

I slept most of saturday. Everytime I got up I got tired again half an hour later. Today I managed to get out and play a round in Pennants practice though I had a weird situation where my left side is still feeling weak and with my normal fairly loose grip with the right hand my first shot of the day saw the club go sliding out of my left hand and down the range. After that I compensated by holding on a little tighter. Actually played surprisingly well, winning my match 2 up.

I have decided not to bother going to the doc tomorrow. It means another day off work and another day behind with the end of financial year coming up. As it is, I am going to need to put in an extra couple of hours a day on top of the extra that I was doing for a while to catch back up. I don't think that the CT scans are going to make any difference anyway.

V4,

Take it easy, mate.
The world will not end at 30 June and you won't be any good to anybody, either before or after 30 June if you push too hard.

Why wouldn't he drop the other side of the chain link fence. If after the ball his dropped, the fence still impedes his swing, then I suspect you take another club length further away.

So, he then has to play his shot over/under the fence. If the ball then hits the chain link fence, Bad Luck.

Others, more knowledgable in the rules than myself, may correct me here.

QUOTE: mrdenn1s @ May 18 2007, 04:57 PM

Just heard that for next FY, membership subs to increase by 1.9%

How does this compare against other private clubs out there?

Also, they are going to charge $1 / round, on top of subs for any round played (comp, social, practice). These funds are to be used for course development

Not sure what I think about this one, but when i want to play 9 holes after work in summer, it may piss me off??

Thoughts? Any other courses do this?

Well, my first thought is - it aint really 1.9% then.
50 rounds per year equates to approx. 2.5% (not 100% sure of current fees).

Which means actual increase of approx. 4.4% (possibly more if you play more).

4.4% is probably on the upper limit of increases. I think most clubs are limited to a maximum % increase in any one year. I wouldn;t expect too many to increase by more than 5% without serious repercussions.

In any event, you are probably lucky you don't have some sort of levy for the clubhouse debt reduction program.

Can anyone tell me definitively if annual leave loading is or isn't supposed to apply in Victoria in the financial sector to full time employees on a

?

Uppy,

The fact that you are on a remuneration package, suggests to me you are highly unikely to be entitled to leave loading. A "package" tends to suggest that everything is included.

Just think of your wasted time on ISG as your compensation for 17.5% loading laugh.gif

Topic: The Lounge / Friend has been caught having an affair

Scottie,
I have been through a very similar thing about 3 years ago and I have lost contact with my mate as a result. I have lost a good friend over it, but I just lost all respect for the guy and our conversations were never the same again.

In short, our families were friends for about 5 or so years, as our kids went to school together. We spent a lot of time at each others houses, BBQ's etc..

We planned and took a US holiday for 4 weeks together with our families. We basically lived in each others pockets for that 4 weeks and generally got on really well.

Not long after we returned home from holidays, his wife informed us that he had been sleeping with one of their neighbours (who was also married).

It became very nasty stuff and I tried to stay impartial, but when he discussed it with me, he was far from honest with me over what he had done.

I think that was the part that lost it for me. Not the fact that he had done it, not even that he didn;t confide in me while he was doing it, BUT, the fact that when it came out, he still had the gall to tell me nothing is going on and although they liked each other, they had never acted on it.

We now catch up with the wife every 6 months or so, but overall, my wife and I have lost good friends out of it.

So in the end, I suggest you try and talk to your mate and try to keep your friendship with him.
But, if you have lost respect for him, it won't be the same and you will naturally drift apart. It doesn;t need to be a conscious decision.

The only conscious decision should be to give him a go and hear him out.

This has been Dr Phil - over & out.

Topic: Sports Talk / Who has played Senior Australian Rules?

Played heaps of junior footy and then played senior footy in the Eastern Suburban Churches league at the age of 17. I was still at school and playing footy paid better than my part time job.

Don't let the "churches" bit fool you - it was a tough initiation to senior football (and life) and there was at least 1 all in per game.

Played 3 seasons and then gave it away to concentrate on work, study and cricket.
