Well, that was a waste of bloody time. 17 pts on the first nine, wiping both par 5’s. 14 coming home with another wipe on the only par 5.
One par in the last 10 holes. I’ll be out to 12 soon. Haven’t been that high in 40 years.

So in summary, 31 pts with 3 wipes, 2 sore knees and a bad temper. I hate golf.

Ended up with 37 points. No misses but an awful putting effort with 5×3 putts and opened with a 4 putt double bogey.

Topic: Golf Talk / What if you could only have 12 clubs?

After leaving out the 8 and 9 irons, I’d have;

Driver
Driver
5w
1i
3i
4i
5i
6i
7i
Wedge
Lob wedge
Putter.

Sometimes carry 2 putters and leave out the 5i or wedge.

I bought a dozen yellows at Rebel in Shepparton early Sept. They still had the gift packs too.

I’d leave out the 8 and 9 irons. Rarely use either of them and it would make no difference to the score.

Played my round today. Terrible start with 6 pts after 5 holes and 4 of my 10 shots gone. Ended up with 14 pts on the front and came home with 21 for 35 total.
1 wipe – a triple on the 1st after a good drive, double bogey on 5 with a shot and the drive on 18 buried in the face of a fairway pot bunker costing a bogey.

Speaking of aged players, there’s another bloke at Rich River who is 95 and still walks the course. His handicap used to be mid-teens and is now on 27.

i am assuming you are less than 74…

btw, what kinda clubs is he playing with ? the newer technology or the older ones ?

Yes, I’m 10 years younger but probably in worse shape, certainly mentally. He uses graphite shafts and metal woods. He absolutely hates his irons (Power Bilts) as the soles are too broad making it hard to hit down and through with a tight lieor on hard ground.

A mate of mine is 74 and still plays off 4. He outdrives me by up to 50 metres and usually plays 2 or 3 irons less than me for the same length. Never practices even after not playing for weeks or months.
I think his secret is that he started with an orthodox simple swing and it hasn’t changed at all in over 50 years. He knows nothing about swing theories and technicalities and his only thought is to start the downswing smoothly.
He’s the best consistent ball-striker I’ve seen.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Billy Dunk

Great player when he was on a roll and he quite often was. Not a long hitter but had a simple repeatable swing. Unusual set-up in that he started with the clubhead well inside the ball and each waggle moved it further out. When the head reached the ball away he went.

9.9. Haven’t played for a while having lost interest again. Warmer weather will probably see me out again.

Thats a superb index when read in conjunction with the hitting distances you quoted below.

5i – 130/135m

90m usually a 7 iron but whatever I feel will do the job.

How do you manage to shoot so low?

Dunno really. Generally manage to keep the ball in play but that’s probably because I don’t hit it far enough to get off the fairways. Driver goes about 190 max and a small-headed driver or 1 iron gets me to most longer par 4’s.
The 7 iron has been my club of choice for approach shots from 120m in for over 40 years and it’s just automatic.
I only play for the exercise now but having a touch of the Bowditch’s doesn’t help the scoring. Can play to 3/4 if the mood’s right. The strange thing is that despite having the putting yips I used to get my share of long putts and birdies. Now they’ve gone away, getting a lengthy putt is a real rarity.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Going backwards is it normal

Have taken the advice of many people on ISG and have now been taking lessons for the last few months. I fell like my swing has improved but my scores have blown out a bit. Is it normal to do this cause i am hoping if i hang in there it will turn around and i will beome better than i was prior to lessons. ???

I’ve gone backwards since the invention of golf forums. I can’t help trying out everything and now I’ve forgotten how I used to do it.

One of the blokes at my club recently turned 95.
He plays off 28 now and still walks the course and is probably fitter than I am. It’s fitting that his membership number is 1.
Any real oldies at your club?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / How does it feel when sustaining lag or delaying release?

It would sure help if we knew the credentials of some of the posters on this site.

Sometimes confusing for us newbies. Like, I know the credentials of people like Dart, Guru, Biomechanic, AB and the like. But just because someone agrees with you, it doesn’t mean they know what they’re talking about. Might just mean they’re on the same wrong track.

I’m very much aware that I don’t know 1/100th of what Dart or Guru know about this stuff, but I have to go with my instincts and what works for me. I’m no expert, but the video doesn’t lie and when I see myself looking like a hacker, I know something has to change else I’m just perpetuating bad habits. So it may be that when I focus on one thing, it causes other things to fall in place. And I believe the ball flight tells us most of the story. As in, if a 63 yo can hit 230-240m and it goes straight with a slight draw, most of the basics have happened correctly.

Philthevet06 confirms my thoughts on what has been causing my loss of lag and early release so are we both wrong, or are these just different ways to achieve the same results?

You can safely ignore anything I might say.

MrC.

Think of the path of a lawn bowl. The apex is when it’s at the maximum distance from the centreline, or in golf – the target line.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / FLOP SHOTS

Well if all you do is bitch and moan at someone because they share experiences with other members than yeah I am no longer going to let “haters” get to me…

This makes them insignificant! Have no influence in my world or in what I want (and am going to achieve).

Treat me with respect and I will be more than happy to be friendly and chat. I don’t have time for people anymore whose sole goal is to drag people down.

Sorry not sugar coating it! A few too many members are far to concerned with the world of others rather than taking care of their own business. After getting bogged down in it all recently, I am deciding to rise above it and let them go.

Yes insignificant to me and my goals from this point on!

Better to ignore rather than comment about those you think aren’t worth your time.
