Depends on what your definition of sandbelt is. If you are an old fool with closed eyes, then “Sandbelt” refers to clubs with 100 year old clubhouses and courses designed by Al McK. If you are like the rest of the normal world, it refers to a geographic area of land with a distinct soil type and course layout style. Do a search for rankings of Sandbelt courses on this forum. Southern appears many times. What’s the issue? Is Rosanna in the sandbelt? |

Wrong grasshopper. I get to play Rosanna all the time through family members. The clay underbelly makes the grass growth uneven. The lack of water means that the fairways crack. The course is always changing its layout and has been under construction for at least 2 years. Compare with Southern. A sandbelt course with a new clubhouse, good layout and reputed to be one of the best maintained courses in Vic. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Cheap Private Membership Pen is $3k joining (thats half price) and $1450 subs (half price also). 6 months wait to get in, and you need to apply before end of 2007 else the joining fee goes up to $3.5k If you can wait that long and are prepared for some “snobbery”, thats the place to be. If you want instant access for the summer coming and a pretty good course go for Southern or Spring Valley. I joined Southern 2.5 yrs ago as I live over the road in Dingley |

Topic: The Lounge / Where is Everybody? From my perspective, the forum vibe has changed completely – and it could prove difficult to get back. It’s just not as simple as before. Spot on… The forum now sucks. No more fighting, swearing, course reviews, attacks on new posters, stupid threads on who has the best rack, ISG challengers or golf days….. “But at least it’s prettier”........ |

Topic: Ask Bruce / Sand filled divots I was reading one of the Australian Golf Mags over the weekend. Old Jack N himself has stated that a divot on the fairway is the truest form of GUR, so therefore, should be treated as such. I tend to agree. Other people have stated that this rule could be bent by cheating players to suit themselves, and when is a divot not a divot? But the same can be said for pitch marks, or intended swing path wth staked trees, etc. Isn’t one of the great things about golf that you are only cheating yourself? Thoughts? |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Worst Private Club My nomination is: Rosanna….4 years of works on the course, holes constantly out of play, bad conditioning and a pro shop that bans players from having any type of logo on socks….could be so much better A quick word on Southern from an insider – I am only having a crack due to the conditioning of the course. Once famed for its greens, now even the weeds struggle to find a reason to grow there. As a member, i havent played it for almost 6 weeks, and i dont miss it. That is scary. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / 13th Beach I thought the first was a gentle opener. Driver to an open fairway and a PW approach to a large green 10th was also just a hole (I think it is rated 6th on the card though??). Driver to an open paddock followed by 9 iron / wedge The 14th was a lame par 5. Very little danger off the tee and also around the hole. However, there were many strong holes. I loved all the par 3’s as i said. I think the 5th is a great little par 4. Blind tee shot with danger follwed by a wedge to a small green. The last is also a strong par 4 with a sunken green with a severe 2 tier putting surface. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / 13th Beach Well guys, I played the Beach course on Sunday (the first 6 holes in fog) and would highly recommend the place for all. Maybe only 3 holes provide low interest, with the rest having “something” about them to keep you in the game. The par 3’s are superb, with the 110m 16th a beauty. Miss the greaan on any side and you either have a bunker shot played a green 5m above your head or an even bigger height if you miss the pots! The “forced” lay ups from the tee on 4 and 6 that are desrcibed earlier need some discussion. The 4th is a par 5 where the fairway runs out from the tee at about 260m. there is a small pot bunker on the RHS at about 235m. The second shot is played over a wasteland to either a bale out area or directly at the green, taking on the wasteland and some bunkering. i dont feel that this was a forced layup, even though i played 3 wood from the tee. You could play driver, but there is no reward as the green is still out of play for most. I played 3w, 3iron, 7iron, 2 putt par. The 6th is a different story. Another par 5, the fairway ends at 225m with a pot bunker group on the RHS. This time i was forced to play 3w by force off the tee. I smacked it and landed 2 m from the water. I pity the first time player with no yardage book (available for $2.50 from the pro shop…what a great innovation) who hits driver staight into the water. There are many blind approaches to green and the bunkering is superb. The use of wasteland is another strong feature. This is just like bunkers but with little or no formal structure and minimal sand. The wind was down which e=helped and none of the holes were overly long. The greens are very firm and true. I recommend the place to anyone looking for a fun day out. We stayed at a rented place on course with another family which made it all the better. Click here for the website The Accomodation |
