Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / The Over the Top Move

Awesome videos Virge. I took some videos of my swing a couple of days ago and realised that I have a bit of OTT in my swing. My right elbow is too high, which causes a bit of overswing so I lose power at impact.

Next day I went to the driving range and shorten my backswing. I've never hit the ball better. I'm also beginning to understand compression.

Thanks for the time and effort in making those videos.

Topic: Golf Talk / Why did you start playing golf?

I wish I started when I was still in my teens like most people who posted so far. Not late twentys. Who knows what could have happened.

But it started with an invite to play a pitch and putt. Wasn't interested back then because I thought golf was boring and only for old people. Used to play a lot basketball (but not tall enough) and table tennis.

Anyways, once I held a club and try to hit that ball I know I'm hooked. Just got backed into it sometime last year now that the kids are bit older.

My only regret is not starting at an earlier age.

Topic: Golf Talk / Scored my first ever birdie yesterday!

Awesome Col.

The first time is the one to remember. I still remember my first birdie. Par 3, 160m, 6 iron(I was still hitting longer back then) to the green, 4m metre putt breaking right to left, slight downhill, aim then putt the ball into the hole. One of the best feeling you'll get when playing golf.

I play with a few people who never scored a birdie yet.

So well done.

Maybe a video will explain things much better. I'll post one soon...

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / I've started to hit longer

Yes, it seems like I've started to hit longer. I've been given some pointers by a guy from a driving range that I go to. He's a good teacher and whenever I go there he gives me a couple of pointers. The latest being the hinge action on the left elbow which results in a more compact swing.

Because of the more compact swing, it feels kinda weird. I played nine holes today and overshot a couple of greens and made a few that I thought were short. My drives are about 20m longer too. Straightish with some draw.

There's also a drill that I do where I put a guitar strap around the abdominal area to encourage my left elbow to stay close to my body then swing with my left arm. I do the flashlight drill as well.

I've never really read TGM (the book) but read I few threads about it. Does this seem TGM like?

I'll give it a few more weeks then it's time to update distances. I'll update this thread as well as I go along.

I'll try to post a video of my swing. I wish I had a video of my old swing to compare with.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / How to hit it a bit more longer...

QUOTE: br4w1 @ May 19 2006, 03:22 PM

I hit 7 iron 130-135 meters and straight and make a good contact with the ball but i like to see it go a bit more say around 145-150.

Why do you want to hit your 7 iron longer? Is there any reason or you just 'want to'.

Recently, I've been hitting my 7 iron around 150m with good contact. I made some changes with my setup where I now have a slightly wider stance and my takeaway is wider(arc). Then on the downswing, make sure that my hips are clear and follow through.

When playing, I'd still hit a 6 iron though.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Who has the closest to perfect TGM swing?

QUOTE: packard @ May 21 2006, 03:04 PM

PaulK,

Dont get sucked into the hero worship of Hogan. Although some elements of his swing are acts of beauty, his technique was severely flawed. He simply learned (multiple) compensations to cancel out the effects of his faults.

Dont quote me in the USA or you'll get me lynched. But its nonetheless true. If you must copy somebody, copy Elkington. Beauty through simplicity.

The video didn't say Hogan had all the answers but it stated that he had most of the answers. Since I've watched the video, I am now hitting around 20m longer and with a bit of draw on the mid to long irons.

I am a fan of Elkington but I'm simply not tall enough to imitate his swing and be able to hit long.

Besides, results speak for themselves. From what I've gathered, he won 9 major championships in a seven year span. I'm not really familiar with golf statistics but has anybody else achieved this(serious question)?

Ben Hogan, Stuart Appleby, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson, Fred Couples, and might as well put Tiger in the mix.

When I get Foxtel, maybe I'll add more names to the list.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Best 3 wood?

I've got a Macgregor Vfoil 13°. I use this club on short par 4s around 200m distance. Goes arrow straight most of the time. Even mishits go straight. Best money I've spent for around $125 brand new.

A bit harder to hit off the deck only because of the loft. I'm pretty sure a higher loft would be easier to hit. Not a club that you can shape left to right or vice versa. But hey, straight hits is what most people want and that's what I use this club for.

TGM mentioned in it? How so? Have never seen the video myself.

(Hogan's the man)

Yes, Jim McLean mentioned TGM on 11:58 -12:05 of the video(dvd) along with some others including Hank Haney; who is Tiger's coach now.

Yes, with what I've gathered so far; Hogan's the man.

I just watched 'Ben Hogan - The Golf Swing' video and liked the concepts a lot. TGM was mentioned in the video. From now on, I'll be following TGM based teachings/techniques.

Oh, the best price I can get for Titleist ProV1 and ProV1X a dozen is $75 at Amart. Their cost price is $68. I'll put it to the floor, can anyone get ProV's any cheaper than $75? Brand new that is, not off the dodgey internet tongue.gif

Cheers

Unfortunately, the closest amart store from me is 2 1/2 hours (Ballarat) away so not worth the trip. However, I picked up a dozen used ProV1s from 'The Golf Clearance Centre' for $2 each. I didn't really care much about the player's markings or sponsorship logos as long as the ball itself is in good nick. Unmarked used ProV1s are $4 each. They're a 'real' store not an internet 'garage' one.

They are sellling the Srixon Z-URS for $39 a box at Amart All Sports in brisbane - picked myself up 2 boxes biggrin.gif

I thought about ringing and getting Srizxon Z-URs from amart after seeing this post, but with postage combined, there's only $4 - $5 difference so not worth it for me.

munster, this might be a good deal for you even + postage.

Golf Clearance Outlet in Huntingdale Rd. Huntingdale. I'll drop by tomorrow to see if there's still any. Here's the website (under construction) www.golfclearancecentre.com.au

They had Wilson golf gloves for $8. Missed out on this one.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Irons dead-center but driver....

Is your driver part of a set? Meaning, the same brand as your irons?

I used to have the same problem with my old driver. The solution? I replaced it. I went to club demos and hit the drivers being offered. Got a new one with a bigger head and now it's one of the easiest clubs to hit. I don't hit the driver on the driving range anymore. If I can hit my irons, driver is a given.

And... as a lot of people in this forum might say ... maybe you need to get fitted? unsure.gif

Topic: Golf Talk / Good ways to make a playing partner shut up!

Last time I played with somebody like that, I told him I had to go (on 14th tee playing back nine) because I got a message that I got to go home. Moved on from there and played the front nine.

Another one was change the subject and talk about something you know about that he doesn't. I was the one who did most of the talking.

I picked up a 3 pack today and used it on the golf course. It might be too early to say but I probably prefer the Srixon Z-UR. I can get a dozen Z-URs for around $49 so there's not much difference in price.

Topic: Golf Talk / Would you still play

I just had a practice game today and the rest was worth it. I was hitting it really well. Hitting the fairways and nailing my approach shots 5m or closer to the pin. The only thing is; I left my putter at home and putted with my 18° instead. Had a couple of birdies and probably more if I had my putter with me.

I was hitting the ball high as well which is unusual for me because I normally hit the ball with medium trajectory. I've been doing the flashlight drill in the past couple of nights. Whether it has something to do with it I don't know.

I love this game as well but if I played in the last few days, there was a risk of catching the flu and bed-ridden for a few days which I hate. So in essence, rest was needed so I can play more (and better).

Cleveland CG10s for me, specially my 48°. I tried them out before getting them, and loved the feel that it gives, also the result of course.

But, they might not be for everybody. I've tried a few wedges before settling on this one. I didn't really care about brands, I was more after something that felt good with nice balance.

Yes, even McCain wedges with sour cream and sweet chili sauce. Nice combo. smile.gif

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Long Iron Shots

I checked visiongolf.com and after watching the video, I think I'll pass. A little bit too technical for me. What works for me when I'm in the driving range is the Driver/Wood headcover just above the ball. I did this drill when I had the 'shanks' for a couple of weeks.

I hit the ball well when I do this drill because I'm not concentrating on hitting the ball; I concentrate on 'not' hitting the headcover which allows me to hit 'through' the ball, not 'at' it. It's a much simpler thing to do.

Can you get this at any golf shop? I looked at eBay but couldn't find one. Also, about how much?

Topic: Golf Talk / Would you still play

Golf that is.

A few days ago (Wednesday), I didn't continue playing because I felt like my body is not up to it that day even though I birdied the first hole. I could only do half swing because I couldn't rotate properly.

I decided to have a flu shot (left arm) that afternoon. I had the chance to play yesterday and today but my left arm still feels kinda weird and when I do practice swings my right arm is too dominant. I didn't want to take the risk so I'll just continue to rest in the next couple of days then see how it goes next week.

So, would you still play in the same situation?

Topic: Golf Equipment / To wood or not to wood, that is the question.

You said you don't like hitting woods too much. How are you with hitting irons?

Have you tried hybrid irons? Like a Cleveland LDI? They look like driving irons. I hit my 3 and 5 wood well but recently changed my 3 wood to 13° (from 16°) loft, and 18° Cleveland LDI to replace my 5 wood and 21° to replace my 3 iron.

I don't have problems hitting woods off the grass but I prefer the feel of irons. I don't really like hybrid woods either.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Cleveland demo day

QUOTE: benstone @ May 9 2006, 11:24 AM

Anyone know when the next Melbourne Demo day is because I really want to try the HiBore outside? I have only hit it into a net at Drummond, and they didn't have the launch monitor working so I couldn't even look at the launch and spin numbers. I have been reading a lot about the HiBore recently and it sounds as though it could be the club for me (after a trip to Ben).

Go to mizuno.com.au and find out when the demo days are at MGA or ring MGA direct and ask for the demo days. There's also Ping, TMs, etc... on the demo day and ... free hotdog. smile.gif

Andrew007,

Have you tried the Cleveland Launcher COMP (pre Hibore)? These drivers are now under $350 now that the Hibore is out.
