Topic: 35" 34" or 33" putters?

I was told having a putter shortened effects the balance of it. Is that true?

yes it would…..I find for mid handicap player of 11 Im hitting quite a few longish putts…even sometimes off the green…the extra legth feels easier to hit those longer putts…..and the short ones..I grip down slightly…..

I rarely 3 putt so it must work

David Howell only uses a 30” if I remember correctly, and he’s well over 6 foot. Each to their own, putting is different for every person.

Correct length is one that suits your feel and stance requirements – do you have a tall and extended stance/stroke or perhaps a hunched stance and/or low hands.

I’m 6” and play with a 32” putter as it just works for me ! Every time I pick up a 35” putter it feels like a driver to me.

I did play a round with someone who has an approx 27” putter (didn’t have a tape measure in my bag !!). He wasn’t a big guy (maybe 5’8”) but claimed he just kept cutting down until he got to this length and had added a lot of lead tape to the cavity to keep some head feel

35….

Im odd…on longer putts…like say 50 feet ones….I grip the putter at the end more which gives a slightly bigger pendulum

thus I dont have to have a big back swing

on shorter putts I grip down slightly..or say Im off the gree and the ball is abouve my feet

You’re right MrC, nothing worse than leaving a putt stiff! 8(

CS, 8.30 first groups tee off. Course usually open from about midday, sometimes a bit earlier.

I’m 6-2 and was playing 34”. Bought a 2nd-hand putter as a tester (different style) which happened to be 33” and have stayed with 33” since then (and not that test putter). Much better as my head is lower and so the spine angle is steeper, and the shoulders rotate on an axis that allows the hands to follow through on the target line better, and consequently I don’t pull left like I used to do.
I have a SBST stroke, so perhaps those with the gated stroke may not subscribe to the theory.

Hey Brett,

If you get this, what time does the ladies day start at Rocko on Wednesday?

Sorry to high-jack the thread.

LOL Brett. There is a time and place for rubbing things on one’s pants.. The putting green is not one of those times! Seriously though, I am 5”7-5”8 and mine is 34”

I think putters are a very personal thing. Alot depends on where you hold it and you stroke. For mine when the shaft was 35” it sometimes rubbed against my pants so I had it cut down and have loved it ever since.

Topic: Mixed set of clubs?

I would avoid having the different flex in the short clubs. Just ask yourself this simple question. How often do you hit full shots vs half shots with shorter irons?

Hey guru, I know you have probably been asked these questions numerous times but what you’ve said leads me to my point.
What difference does stiff vs reg flex have in a shaft of say less than 36” (8 iron through to wedges). The taylormade TP wedges I am using are going to be “wedge flex” which is S-200 or S-300. That means I already have 2 stiff flex clubs.
The faster swingers or tour players seem to be swinging their short irons at a considerably less speed than they are capable of, (some of the time) I assume to give them better control and accuracy? Watching them on tele it only looks like they are swinging at 70 to 80%, at what speed are they swinging 80-90mph? less? which is reg shaft swing speed. If they changed to a reg shaft would they loose accuracy?
Also mate, will smaller faced irons help with accuracy because the R7 XDs I’m using are bloody big faced irons.

I love having somewhere to talk about this shit!

The S200/300 relates to the thickness of the walls of the shafts.
The typical “wedge flex” shaft is a 37” shaft cut into any of the wedges. ( PW, 50-52-54-56-58-60 )
37” shafts can also be put into anything from 5iron to 9iron.
Depending on the length of club required for the individual.
Jon…

ps: I really hope that Nigel doesn’t come-back with a reference to a Tom Wishon quote.

very good point Styles.
Wedges are evenly spaced, P=46, G =50, S =54, L=58.
What are your thoughts on changing to stiff flex.
I’ve often wondered if flex makes a huge amount of difference as the lenght of a golf shaft gets shorter. Hence you usually find only one flex of shaft available in most of the off the shelf wedges.

I love having somewhere to talk about this shit!

Hi Robbo
reference flex
I’m no expert at all – I was just fitted for a set of clubs (I’m a fit 61yo) – my swing speed is around 86 with 5 iron and around high 90’s with driver… My irons have reg flex shafts (because of my swing speed) and my driver has Stiff (again, because of my swing speed) I was told that usually the difference between an iron and a driver with regards to swing speed is about 15%. Hope this gives you some assistance… I think Guru would be the one to ask being both a very good club maker and golf instructor in one – his advice is worth taking on board.

You might want to try the Bridgestone J33 combo’s. Check them out on Ebay; around $500 at the moment. Less than half the retail price.

Really good buy if they work for you. Try before you buy.

As long as you’re careful about matching the lofts up you’ll be ok.

There’ll be no point having an 8 iron thats 40 yards shorter than your 7 iron!

4 wedges seem an awful lot as well. What loft is on your G wedge?

Topic: Cure for nerves while playing Pennants

i normally dont get nervous, but through the round, even if im playing well i try and make my opponent think im playing bad, whenever i do this it kind of psyches them out and intimidates them to think wow hes playing bad and making pars.and well done on ur win

Congrats Robbo, 5/3 is a great result! Our pennants starts in a few weeks, must remember to come back to this thread and refresh!

Does your team/club go up a division or anything like that now?

Again, congrats!

Topic: Cure for nerves while playing Pennants

I use a Mizuno wet weather glove and have always found it to be good.

Keep yourself as dry as possible. As BM says, keep a dry towel somewhere handy (and dry).

Again as BM says, it is the same for the other guy and he’ll be hating it too – don’t show any indication of it affecting you and he will soon be as pissed off about that as he will be about you handing him his ass in a sling! Mind you, no need to do a Gene Kelly and tap dance your way down the fairway lol!

In short, don’t waste time on things you can’t control and pay attention to the things you can.

Robbo, don’t forget it is the same for the other guy!

Personally, I tend to shed the glove in constant rain and make sure I have at least one towel tucked away in the bag that can’t get wet to dry my hands before each shot. I have found that I don’t tend to strangle the club when I haven’t got a wet glove trying to hold a wet grip, which relaxes the whole hands, arms, etc, allowing me to concentrate on the ball striking. One more club, swing a bit easier, just try to keep it in play, always remembering your opponent is going through the same problems you are.

Best of luck mate,
Brett
