Topic: Rules of Golf / Ball on fairway = remove twig = ball moves

There was a change to this rule.

Before the last revision if you moved a loose impediment that was within a club length of your ball and the ball subsequently moved then it was DEEMED that you had caused the ball to move. This means you would incur a one shot penalty and have to replace the ball.

Now it has become a question of fact. If you move a loose impediment (like a twig) and this action causes the ball to move then you will incur the penalty just as you would have before.

Before the rule was changed you could occasionally be unlucky – move a twig two feet away from your ball, then say due to wind ball moves and you get stuck with a penalty never the less. The rule change has removed this situation.

Topic: Golf Classifieds / FS Nickent Irons + Titleist 3W $250

The irons are a set of Nickent 3DX irons. They are the Hybrid model. The set comprises a 4h (hybrid) plus 5 to 10 irons and a PW. The lofts are a bit stronger than standard from 4 though 9. Thats why they have the 10 iron. They have the stock regular flex graphite shaft in them.

I only played a couple of rounds with them and they are in excellent conidtion with only a few scratches on the soles.

They were an interesting experiment. I think they are a good club. Because of the stronger lofts they go a bit longer with lower ball flight. I decided to stick with my X-18s due to the lower ball flight.

The 3W is a 904F with 14.5 degrees of loft. It has a regular flex Titleist stock shaft.

Its in reasonable to good condition it has cosmetic defects like a scratch on the crown and some sole scratches, etc. It has no dings or other defects that would affect its playability.
Included is a head cover.

I am in Melbourne and I prefer pickup from my office in South Melbourne or home in Tarneit.

Delivery to CBD or close to Tarneit can be arranged for an extra $10. Further might be negotiable depending on how much and/or my travel schedule.

If you want to organise your own courier then I can box it up and they can pick it up from my office.

The X22 is being released within a week in the states. Going on past history the X22 tour will be released early next year. I wouldn’t be in a hurry to buy X20s right now.

They will remaindering the X20s off pretty soon. So I would wait til then. Or you can buy the new model when it comes out.

Topic: Rules of Golf / Drop Zones

Publish,

You could contruct a local rule that uses a coloured post to define a drop zone.

There is also no reason why the post could not be moved from time to time to even out the wear if it became necessary to do so.

Topic: Rules of Golf / Drop Zones

A lot of clubs do it in a pretty half-arsed way.

At many clubs someone from the green staff (who might not play golf or understand the significance of what he is doing) will paint a box and inscribe DZ in it. They may not even worked out if its a fair (equitable) spot to put it or if they have the right number of drop zones. Actually setting up a local rule to govern the drop zone is a real novelty at a fair number of clubs.

Personally I like to see the drop zone as an additional option but its up to the club. The way I look at it the depending on which you rule you are talking about, the rules say you can drop at such and such a point or point(s) and you ought to be able exercie whatever options the rules make availabe to you.

I understand why the committee might want to protect an area and GUR play prohibited achieves this end. The case for making using a drop zone madatory needs to be pretty compelling because you are overturing the way the rules usually operate.

Topic: Golf Classifieds / FS Titleist 904F 14.5 Degree $50

This club has been permanently replaced from my lineup. I will start the ask for this one at $50.

This Titleist Fairway Wood is about five years old. Its a good club that has not seen a lot of use – I hardly played for more than three of the last five years. I get a bit steep on the downswing its not a good club for me.

Its in reasonable to good condition it has cosmetic defects like a scratch on the crown and some sole scratches, etc. It has no dings or other defects that would affect its playability.

The club is 14.5 degrees has a regular flex graphite Titleist stock shaft by True Temper.

Included is a head cover.

This club has been permanently replaced from my lineup.

I have a two year old TM Driver – its in reasonable condition it has cosmetic defects like a scratch on the crown and some sole scratches, etc. It has no dings or other defects that would affect its playability.

The club is 10.5 degrees has a 44 inch TM 65 REAX shaft by Fujikara regular flex.

Included is a wrench, header cover and 4 weights. It has the standard 1×2g and 1×14g weights plus an extra 1×8g and 1×20g. The extra weights are after market ones purchased from driverweights.com.

For an extra $50 I can throw in a mixed dozen on new Callaway IX (might be tour IX will have to check) and Titleist Pro V1s.

Topic: Golf Equipment / The Future of Golf Clubs

You can do a lot more with a driver as its not supposed to hit the ground during the swing.

This factor really limits the ability for clubmakers to transfer driver innovations into other clubs, eg having a really massive head.

Topic: Golf Talk / clothes for bigger than normal guys

Some of the big guys shops have a average to good ranges of leisure wear. You tend to pay through the nose a bit though.

If you can hold your pants up then the shirt tends to be less of an issue – the main problem is that the shirt length often isn’t long enough to stay securely in your trousers. One option to consider is wearing braces, might look a bit daggy but it does the job. You can get somewhat funky braces.

I am in Melbourne.

Its got the wrench the standard weights (a 2g + a 14g) plus I have 2 extra after market weights an 8g and a 20g. Its only got a 44 inch shaft – TM regular flex REAX 65.

Lets say $50 pickup.

Because I can’t post it due to Aust Post size restrictions I prefer pickup. If you are interstate and can organise a courier yourself then I can put it in the right size box and your courier can pick it up.

Topic: Rules of Golf / RO actions in MP dispute.

@RD

I do a fair number of events as an RO. I only do a handful of pennant events as I only volunteer for the events and venues that suit me. I wouldn’t consider myself to be of same calibre as you.

Its an unusual case in some respects the player has confused the penalty relief options and has come up with a valid relief option for an invalid point of entry. How I would have proceeded would depend on exactly what was said.

If the question was confined to point of entry then my answer would be confined to that matter.

If the player had muddied the waters by also saying where he wanted to drop then (and maybe its the wrong thing to do) I would feel obliged to let him know whether he could or couldn’t drop there as well.

Of course as had been pointed out the player could have set himself free by asking the magic question – ‘what are my options?’ or even better by knowing the rules in the first place.

Well I took

“The player suggests that ball may have struck tree on fairway side and bounced back into hazard, seeking a drop on the fairway side”

to mean that he had also indicated to the RO that he wanted to take a penalty drop on the fairway side of the LWH.

In spite of the fact that he was confused/ignorant about the penalty relief options it is remains the case that he was asking to be able take the a penalty drop that was permissable.

I don’t think it would be unreasonable to tell him he was permitted to take a penalty drop on the side that he wanted to.

Topic: Rules of Golf / RO actions in MP dispute.

It no use citing the guidance from the ruling bodies if you ignore the actual facts provided in the question.

In this case the facts provided say that there was argument about the point of entry AND the outcome that the player was seeking was to take his penalty drop on the fairway side. The assistance of RO had been sought to resolve the issue.

Regardless of which way the the question about point of entry was decided it was always the case that the players desired outcome would be a permissable outcome.

I cannot accept that it would contrary to the ruling body guidance for the RO to confirm that the player could drop on the fairway side because CLEARLY the player had raised it.

On reflection however I will concede that I should probably only state that the point of entry is at point A and that his preferred outcome is permissable.

Given all of the facts including the fact that player said that he was seeking a drop on the fairway side of the hazard (and this is a permissable option) the RO was seriously remiss in not advising the player he could drop there.

Having regard to all the facts I probably would have been likely to say in one burst

... your point entry is here, its a LWH, so your options are …

Topic: Golf Talk / worst course ever played

HCWT

I left at the start of 1983 and my parents moved away in 1989. I visited briefly in 1993 and 2000. I had a great childhood there but I am not in a hurry to go back – its a shadow of its former self.

Had a fair few trips to Adelaide where we have quite a few relatives.

I wasn’t much chop at football or cricket. I played mosquitto fleet for Souths in my younger days before I worked out that I was a lot better at soccer and tennis. I discovered golf when I was 15. My father was a decent footballer he played for North for a few years.

Topic: Golf Talk / worst course ever played

This is not a very nice topic. Sure you can this couse is the worst one, but really its all relative to the resources available to the club, what they do with them and other factors like climate.

South Broken Hill is not a bad track at all. I learned to play there and in my time it was a thriving and very friendly club. They have no water and not a lot of cash. Its a pretty inhospitable climate. The couse is hardpan with oiled slag greens (its a black crystal substance thats a waste byproduct of smelting lead works a bit bettter than sand). Yes they have minimal grass but you get 2 clublengths preffered lie on the fairway of the hole you are playing.

Nearby courses like Menindee, Sunset Strip and the old (North) Broken Hill Golf Club are similar. Broken Hill Golf Club has since gotten access to effluent water and has been grasssed – a really stunning transformation of a course that was pretty decent to begin with.

Competing with the North (after it was grassed and propped up the ‘Demo’ Club) and the declining pouplation has taken a toll on the South club and it has really struggled for years. Sadly the North Club is also really struggling for money.

Eastlake has had bridges for a while now so you don’t have to do the dance with dealth on Wentworth Avenue anymore. In the days of metal spikes crossing it on a wet day could be an interesting experience. I was a member there in the 80s, I know that they have improved the place out of sight since then. Ross Strachan must have been the pro there for 30 years or so he is a great guy, although some of his staff have been absolute pr#cks.
