Topic: Golf Talk / Murrumbidgee Country Club Still busy at belco if it’s monthly medal. But if you wait until a bit later in the day it quietens down. Lot’s of slow play at Belconnen, but I still play there for now, it’s fairly cheap and in pretty good condition at present. Long bloody way from Murrimbidgee though! |

Topic: Golf Talk / RMC duntroon I just call it how I see it Cliff, difference of opinion I guess. Look I play at Belconnen usually which has a shite reputation, but is in far better nick than RMC these days, especially the fairways and costs around the same price for a round, although probably has a lot more members, but double the course to maintain also. For the record, I played it on a Friday. I was curious if there was an etiquette rule on if you are playing through on the back 9 if the groups on the first have to give way to you on these courses or do you just have to join the cue? Anyone? |

Topic: Golf Talk / RMC duntroon Sorry I disagree, it’s a goat track! Played there for the first time about 3 weeks ago, staff were great and friendly, it was pissing down rain and I was only 1 of about 3 guys on the course but…. the fairways are in shocking condition, like half dead cooch grass i’m talking. You’d actually be better of in the rouch at times. Just not a well maintained course I think, could be a combination of the drought and the fact that there aren’t a huge amount of lakes/ponds on the course to draw recycled water from. Pain in the ass also that when I finished the first 9 and went to play the back nine, as it’s essentially off the same holes just slightly different tee’s, there were 3 groups waiting to hit off as it had stopped raining. Needless to say I went home. They did only charge me $12 cos it was raining and offered me a free buggy in their defence (pun not intended). |

Topic: Golf Talk / Mens Golf Apparel Oh those Ping caps are cool too by the way, heven’t seen them in stores in Canberra though. I wear the Puma version of the same thing, have one in plain white and one in bright green from the Puma Shop in Sydney, they have the full range of Puma golf gear and the J.Lindeberg Puma golf shoes. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Mens Golf Apparel Um yeah I guess. I am one of those people who would never play golf in jeans so am a bit traditional in that way but won’t be reaching for the plus fours anytime soon. I always wear flat front pants/chino’s (shorts in summer) that are fairly tailored, brooksfield (from Myer) have pretty good slim fit pants at under the $100 mark and I’ve also got a few bargains with the basic Reserve (Myer also) brand flat front chino’s which are a slimmer fit than I thought and can be had on sale around $40-$50. I also have a couple pairs of Herringbone pants and a pair of shorts which are great, however on the pricey side from $200 for the shorts and $300+ for the pants. Fortunately enough for me, I used to work there as a second casual job, so got them all for free ha ha. But they are nice and slim and great quality. Hope this helps |

Topic: Golf Talk / Mens Golf Apparel Puma do have some nice stuff, and the Ralph Lauren custom fit polos are slimmer also, I used to work for RL so have a bunch of them. The penguin stuff isn’t bad either. I’ve been getting tightarse lately while saving for an apartment and the polos are actually cut really well for slim guys from Cotton On. I am a total fashion snob so never thought I would even set foot in there but they are only $30-40 for 2 or something, if they last me a year i’ll be happy. I would love it if an Aus retailer would pick up the JL golf range also. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Driving distance It’s actually not that skinny, as in I have quite a lot of muscle tone for my weight. I come from a triathlon/cycling background and have very low body fat and still keep in good shape. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Driving distance I can drive on avg about 230-250m, sometimes a little less (when I get lazy and get my dreaded hook going) and sometimes a little more on certain good days with good conditions as described above by many. My longest drive I worked out to be around 286m, however it was on a downhill par 5 and have never equalled it again. I would say for my build, I have reasonable length off the tee (6’2 and 74 kg’s) but my low ball flight helps in many conditions giving me plenty of roll and keeping it out of the wind. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Best Wedges out there KYC I didn’t know you were from Canberra, I too have one of the TS wedges that I also got from Pete’s before my CG12, nothing wrong with them for the price really, they just don’t spin as much. I also got the Cleveland from there for $149 (not bad for a off the rack price). Petes do have some good cheap stuff, there service leaves a little to be desired at times though, especially for “Pros” as their staff all are apparently. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Best Wedges out there Just to revive an old thread, I have been using a CG12 sand wedge for a while, the feel is very good and I thought they spun fairly good but not out of this world etc as I tended to play a lot of 3/4 punch shots in instead of full shots. So today, 85 metres out from a par 5, 3rd shot in, my avg optimal sand wedge distance is a bout 75-80m so I knew I would need a full shot in and that I would need to get it past the flag to allow for the spin. So I absolutely cream the shot, it flies straight at the flag and past it, a little too past it for most, then lands on an upslope and just rips back like you would not believe to only about 4 feet. After I got to the green and stepped out from the pitch mark to the ball, the ball had spun 9 metres back! I made the birdie putt luckily, but I was just amazed at how much this thing spun. I do use ProV’s, and they help a lot, but more and more I think a good spinning shot is 4 different factors, 25% the club/grooves, 25% the ball, 25% where you land it on the greens slope and 25% the shot obviously. I used to think the shot had more of a factor, say 50% but more and more these improvements in technology are making it easier to spin the ball. I know my lob wedge which isn’t spin milled and is about 10 years old doesn’t spin all that much in comparisim, needless to say i’ll be replacing it soon… |

Topic: Golf Equipment / titleist pro-v1, where to buy? Don’t agree with you Jack. I use mint re finished pro V1’s and you can’t tell the difference, they look almost brand new. I don’t buy them refinished because I lose balls either, I buy them refinished because they only last 1 round before they cut up and there is no way I’m spending $80 on balls every 10-12 weeks. After that they go in the practice bag. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Wrong ball choice? Wow 5m is a lot of spin. I use the pro v1 (re finished), not v1x and am super happy with it. I don’t find the spin to be super excessive, but I can fire it at the pin. My course is not long by any standards and my distance off the tee (bout 250m-265 avg) it’s not often that I’m hitting anymore than a 5 iron or less in to the green barr the par 5’s, normally around an 8i or less though . I don’t find these slice or draw anymore than other balls i’ve tried, although I hit fairly straight. I had tried the Titleist DT Carry in the past (due to naturally low ball flight) and although it carries and is more of a distance ball, control in to greens was near impossible, these balls do not spin at all. I found myself having to aim for the front of greens and roll on to the green. Because distance is not an issue really, i’d much rather play a ball that I can throw at the pin without worrying it will go over the back of the green. For what it’s worth, I also use a cleveland cg12 zip grooved sand wedge for extra spin and never thought, “that’s too much spin”. I guess you do need to get used to hitting past the pin and allowing for a bit of spin though. |

Yes the inflation/living costs are rising but the biggest thing killing Chinese manufacturers is the weak US dollar. Almost all manufacturers deal in US dollars and as you all know it is know almost dollar for dollar. I work for a manufacturer (not golf, but still sporting) who buys a small amount of goods from China, maybe 3-5% of our yearly product and it has never been better to buy from there from an import point of view. A few months ago I was at an export/import seminar organised by Austrade and rumours were there that many Chinese manufacturers are considering moving to something more stable such as the Euro. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Newton vs Norman I have to say I’m not a huge Norman fan, to be honest the most vivid memories I have of him is him choking at the masters when I was 16 on a Monday morning before school while Nick Faldo made it look so easy it’s not funny, but I never held that against him. As a golfer he will acheive more than almost any other Australian on a golf course, although I believe Adam Scott has the talent to do better (if only he could putt!) The thing that got me was the way he handled the recent wedding/media spotlight. Hiring private security gaurds to act as policeman arresting journo’s was not a pretty sight. They are intruding, but it is their job’s and media attention helps elevate their status hugely. I mean what did he think was going to happen when you invite Bill Clinton and George Bush Sr amongst others to your wedding, that the media won’t be interested? The most dissapointing was the “you journo’s can’t come in and take pictures or we’ll arrest you but these New Idea photographer’s can cos they are gonna give us 300 grand or whatever it was even though i’m a gizzilionaire and don’t need it” attitude. Surely they could have posed out the front of the villa or resort for 5-10 minutes, let the journo’s have a few snaps and everyones happy no, and get on with the rest of proceedings? |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Stiff vs Regular driver with higher loft. I tee mine quite high, but not because of the loft of the club, i’ve always just followed the rule of having part of the ball sitting slightly above the top of the club at address and with the depth of todays modern drivers faces, I think it’s quite essential to tee up fairly high. So maybe experiment with it, if your hitting in to the wind stick the tee down a bit to keep it low and put it up when it’s at your back. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Stiff vs Regular driver with higher loft. me too, I hit my 13 degree Sumo 250-270m fairly consistently. I use a high loft to combat my low ball flight so it essentially gives me a normal ball flight and still plenty of roll also. Just like a higher ball flighter hitting a 10.5 I guess. |

Topic: Golf Talk / this is weird.. Agree with TIM before on the loft, most hit a far to low loft on the driver. I have a naturally low ball flight so hit a 13 degree (Nike SUMO round) and it has helped me heaps. Over the last 2 months now I am used to it, I’ve added about 10-15m average on my drives and am now getting it out there about 260-270m fairly consistently because I’m more comfortable with the club so can swing hard confidently and middle it. For me it was a small thing with knee flex I worked on to get more consistentcy but everyone has something I guess. I don’t have to hit a 3 wood off the tee too much because my local course doesn’t warrant it, but none the less it is something I am working on for playing other courses and generally improving my game. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Who's the most famous golfer you have played golf with? I think Johnny is lying, he is, or was, a politician after all. After seeing him bowl a cricket ball I honestly thought that when a prime minister wins office, the first thing that should happen is they take him down to the nets at the Royal Mint (closest to p. house) and make sure he can bowl one on the pitch at a half decent speed. If it misses the pitch (or doesn’t even make it to the end of the pitch as in Johnny’s case) then it’s a re election. An absolute stain on Australia’s political history if you ask me. Bob Hawke would just be mortified. |

Topic: Golf Talk / How did you all play this weekend? Only got 9 holes in, but 3 birdies and 1 over off the stick. Always happy for even 1 birdie let alone 3 in half a round. Drove really well and missed 2 other reasonably easy birdie putts and also had 2 bogies and 1 double. All in all, very happy. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Balata vs. Surlyn golf balls I used to love balata’s 10 years ago as a kid, all except for when you hit one thin and that was the end of them! Are they even made anymore these days? I have seen some Ram Balata’s but they were hardly the soft type of high spinning balata you used to be able to buy, more like a crappy 2 peice. |
