Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / One Plane Swing

Not having a go at anyone here directly, but, why is there constant bashing of what one persons believes to be a correct golfing technique, or better, or worse, or crap, or a revelation in golf? I personally believe that there are too many people who think they have the secret when in actual fact, we all are still learning this game no matter who one is whether you are a pro, a an elite AM player, teacher, learner, mid level etc. No person will ever know everything about this game even if you think you do. That is a fact in my opinion.

Hi Dart, Guru…

If I do the 10-24-F and then the 1-K and 10-0, will I become a better golfer? I understand, not many do though away from it..

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Cure for nerves while playing Pennants

Pennants or matchplay. A wonderful game. The thing with pennants is that you are only playing against one person, be it for the team. Why get nervous about playing against just the one person? You are in the team because you have ability or perhaps your club is in a lower division and you are there to make up the numbers but who cares? Being nervous on the first tee is because you have fear or fear of people watching you, fear of hitting a shot 25m etc. Your mates know how you can hit it and if they are a gelled pennant team, they will be there on the first tee providing support and more importantly, having a joke. They will also be there on the fairway watching you if you game is a close one…well I hope.
I can honestly say that I really cannot remember the last time I had nerves on a golf course being pennant specific. I know the guys I am playing against (some are mates) and some I just know who they are from playing in other events I do as well from time to time. We are there to beat eachother and there are mind games when taking club selections all the time. At the end of the day, win or lose, you have a beer or a gatorade and move on.
I really do not have an answer to beating nerves ROBBO. Every person is different and prepares differently for golf being pennants. What I can say is that you have to trust your game and when you doubt it, shit can and will happen. Just keep it simple mate.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Golfing Catalogues

Just received one of these from a certain retail place and had a look through it. I then compared it to one they sent me about 5 months ago and they have lifted the prices on their latest catalogue
For example:
1. They had a buggy advertised for $29.99 many months ago reduced from $49.99 and in the current catalogue, it is a on sale at $59.99 now? This is the same for many other golf buggies.
2. Previously, they had a packaged set with a bag going for $699.99 and in their current catalogue they have put in a buggy that goes for $179.99. The total new price for the bag, clubs and buggy is now $799.99 and they say it is a saving of $160.00? Do the math there!
3. There are so many things in this current catalogue that are rorts and I am guessing they must have a new marketing manager or they think (we, us) the golfing public are idiots?
4. To top it off, there is a section in the catalogue about club fitting using an indoor launch monitor and that their staff are all professionally trained in using it and are dynamic club fitters? To me, that is complete bullshit (can I say bullshit). Outdoors is the only way to be fitted for clubs.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why more people don’t buy online with a trusted seller or even at their local pro-shop as one would think your local pro will deal with you in an honest way. Shit, my local pro and certain golf on-line companies i have used are great.

So, what are all your thoughts on golfing catalogues, the lies in them, being rorted (I have never been rorted by the way)...Feel free to vent your anger and I am not angry boys, I just find it comical that places can rort people and get away with it. We need to help the boys new to this game for when they go and get the firsts set of bats or when upgrading.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Drill for ball striking?

Hi Guru,

The pain barrier? I suppose you could say I am trying to give golfers here some advice on what it takes to get to another level or how they can do it from real life experiences . I am sure and as you have mentioned that the majority of people here are off high handicaps and that is fine mate. I used to be as well as we all were at some stage.
The pain barrier is not about having injuries like sore wrists, elbows, a bad lower back, it is more about understanding the need to practice at times and the tribulation one goes through with their game. A pain barrier becomes mental over time. Get on top of it and ones golf game will improve. Make sense?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Why Golfers Aim Right

You can go out and play in your local comp, stand behind your mates on the tee and witness that many of them are aimed towards the covers. You can then play with them socially and let them know and when you get them aligned at the target line, they believe they are aiming too far down the leg side. Same as on the range as well.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Drill for ball striking?

Ken and Harry, both good players in their respective years. Perhaps I should of added a few other aspects of having solid fundamentals in place. Grip, stance, for sure and then also alignment, posture or body angles at address.
I am pretty sure the vast majority of golfers here can swing the club okay. Perhaps if people worked on the simple things in this game, it may not become “easier” at first, but it sure does go a long way to helping them reach what one may aspire to.
I learnt to swing or hit at the ball as a kid like we all did. Learning how to make contact with the balls comes from that first smack of it and then becoming hooked. There comes a time in ones golfing life that in order to improve, you have to get the basics in place. Aiming left or right, a bad grip, bad posture etc..go for it if you so choose but it just makes the game more difficult over time.
I do disagree with you Dart when you mentioned that the simple truth is they guarantee nothing meaning the funds. I must of had a coach who was insane many years ago and this same coach must be insane to have so many great players competing on various professional golf tours and high profile amt events to this current day. If I said too much more, it would be a dead giveaway who this coach was. The guy is a legend in golf coaching circles but is retired these days.
If a golfer feels lost with the correct stance/alignment…or a better or more sound grip, well then they have to get over the pain barrier and get used to these. I ask my mates how they are going with their swing who play to this day? Hmm, I just have to get back to a few basics, I am flushing it but my alignment is off. Now, these boys are good and not your average golfer but it is back to basics for them all the time. As for me, I always go back to the basics and as Guru mentioned in a post somewhere else on this forum, “it seems I am a frustrated golfer”. I am far from being a frustrated golfer just to make a note of it. I am lucky to play 2 times a week including going to the range to practice what more golfers should do and that is your short game. I can still knock it around and play to my 2 though.
Comments appreciated….......

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Drill for ball striking?

The problem Muntz is that the majority of golfers do not have the best of set-ups. This is evident in most golfers you may play with on a weekend comp. Thinking about lag or having it created during your swing is a thought best left for a while. A good key for golf is solid fundamentals and the rest sort of takes care of itself in a way. Go and have a hit with a person who is a scratch golfer or low marker and learn from what they do and how they swing it. It will put things in your head that are positive and give you some get up an go.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Wrist feeling through impact ?

By all means, go to the range Muntz. There is no other way mate to get better at this game than hitting balls. Well, hitting balls with a purpose and understanding what you are trying to achieve for long term results is what I am talking about.
I am no golf pro/ coach mate and do not aspire to be one. I suppose I could be one and going by a few recent posts of mine, I have hung some crap on people that mat have offended them but it is tongue and cheek. I am sure they have deep hearts as do I mate.
The thing is, how can a person get advice from a PGA Golf Professional when the professional cannot hit the bloody ball in the first place? Perhaps they used to be but today is today? Knowledge is priceless but being able to show a person what you mean and say is even better. There are not many teaching golf professionals around that can walk the talk Muntz. To throw this back, there are also many great teaching professionals that can walk and talk Muntz. Are you confused?
I will explain it to you… Too many golfers get wrong advice, read too many books or articles, try to do something different on the course after reading them, get coerced into a certain teaching method or become brainwashed from a method and I am not pissing on TGM by the way! Can I say that here?

Golf is simple Muntz.

Stuff it, I will go on even more. How the fcuk can I have no idea when I have mates playing on the USA PGA Tour, one is just outside the top 50 by the way (OWGR), a few mates playing on the Asian Tour learning the trade and then many more mates slogging it out for a pay check of $9.95 each week on dust bowls around Australia?

You no what Muntz? These boys hit balls all the time and hit them until the sun came down.

I just did a google search and you shot 82, 77, 86 to have a total of +29 in a past tournament Guru. (Byron Bay-2007) $0.00… What happened there? TGM had a holiday that week I suppose? How can you be a guru of golf when you cannot play the game at a level that is of todays ability? How can you give advice to a person on this forum with your golfing skills….or results? That 86 must of been hard on you?

Be cooll

Muntz, nothing dumb mate in in your post. My medication to you is to stop thinking too technical and get out on the course or the range and have some feel or learn what feel is to you. No person can teach you feel, not me, not any person on this forum. Forget about hinge, post impact and the like. Think about the golf hole and the shot that is presenting you. Then again, don’t think about the mechanics of the shot, just hit the bloody ball and enjoy the flight of it.

Topic: Golf Talk / Driving Range=Course Performance??

Muntz,

It is very important to warm up before a round whether it be a few pitches to a green or hitting a few balls on a range. Getting out of a car and off to the 1st tee is not a textbook performance although I have done it many times before and played well. Crazy game. Maybe I got lucky? I play off 2 mate so not a world beater but I did play off much less a few years ago. Why am I off 2 now? Injury plain and simple and then putting on a wedding ring although my wife loves golf.

As for “a breakthrough point”.. I do not think there is a breakthrough point in golf unless you are talking about cash being involved. One can break 100, 90, 80, 70 and be stoked but is that a breakthrough?

I still go out and have a round of 79/80 occasionally and it does not matter if I am coming down the back nine at 6 over with 2 or 3 to play. I am looking to make a birdie and that is all, nothing else. The difference between a low or high marker is that a low marker will be positive more times than not and back their ability. It is also not about smashing a drive 300 down a fairway, it is all about placing the ball in play and having a shot into the green to your strength and I stress, to your strength. Personally, I would love to hit it 300 but I cannot unless I am hitting down an airport runway. Perhaps 260m would be more accurate and then a sneaky one after that with the wind and a kick off a cart path… (back into the fairway)...I may be 140m out and hit a 4 iron? Call me a pussy but wind and placing the ball on the green is better than trying to hunger a 6/7 iron into the wind. Take a 100m shot into the wind? Leave your PW or 9 in the bag and take a 8 or 7, learn to hit it with a punch and it becomes a weapon in your game. Learn to hit it low with a fade or a draw depending on the wind direction. Learn to hit the ball off a bare lie or even a flush lie as it does make a huge difference. Learn to hit a high hook or high fade, both tough shots. If you can master a high hook and control it, you are doing very well.
There is no easy fix to this Muntz. It is practice and practice and then practice again. Will I get back to a lower handicap in the future? No I will not because I do not practice anymore. I still have it on certain days when I play in the local comp and it it is cool when it happens. It is a good feeling to have 2/3/4 under for a round and you always think you left a shot or 2 out on the course but then you come back to the world and think, well, I was lucky to make that slider after I stuffed up that chip shot etc. I may go out and have 77 this weekend in my local and am I pissed at doing it? No I am not as I have had that many 77’s in my golfing life and it is not the end of the world. I may hit a ball OB or have a disco on the greens and that will be the reason mate. That bloody putter is a demon mate. I would rather have a 20 footer than a 6 footer at times for a girlfriend on the greens. A girlfriend is a birdie okay. (I am married)

So…does something suddenly click and you go to another level? There is only one person that knows this and that is yourself. Replace the fear you may have with practice and positive thoughts.

All the best ….

Being caught in a bad circle of people for a certain period is unfortunate. Rising above the past and learning from past experiences is what makes a person or for the sake of this forum, a golfer, no matter what their current ability is.

Topic: Golf Talk / Junior Golf, how were you treated?

I remember as a junior, not being able to play in the “adult comp” because of my age. We would have to tee off in the early morning and be on our way and have a small corner of the clubhouse to get our 2 balls if you won the comp. It used to piss me off as the juniors at the club I was at, well 3 or 4 of us were the lowest markers in the club? We could beat the pants off the adults but could not play in say a monthly medal? My mates and me included made a stand one year when we were 15/16 and pennants came around. We said, f### you to the adult pennant team (um. committee) and played in the junior team. Suffice to say, we won the junior pennant that year and the senior team was made up of believers. Going ahead 15 years to this day, this club is still in a low division and has no juniors. One would think they would wake up but some places just do not have an alarm button.
