Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Swing outside in
To be honest Jeffman it bored me greatly, I couldn’t have got through 13 episodes of you saying things that golfers have said for ages! Why don’t you explain why your theory is so different and revolutionary? I have seen your site and it just regurgitates “ideas” attainable in other books! Jeff you throw down the challenges… Theory is great, everyone has one… PRACTICAL.. Who have you coached with this theory? Come out and have a hit and show us that your ball striking is superior? Just as silly a challenge isn’t it? Jeff you are arrogant at times and you put yourself on a pedestal being critical of others, expect it in return… This is Australia!! ;) |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / right hand grip So true Darty… Like the old saying says “Never bet a good golfer with a bad grip!” – Chances are they have learnt to use it! My right hand position is very “under” in what would be considered “normal” but I find I get better leverage here and there is power and precision to be found! |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Swing outside in Trust me Jeffman’s approach is not much more credible, if at all! Outside-In swing path is not as big a “bogey man” as everyone makes out! Funny many guys use it for better control… You can actually hit it a little bit harder. The things that I believe you need to fix is not thrusting hard from the top of the swing but saving all that power for impact. Thrust early, spin out = steep angle of attack, choppy out to in swing. Hips pulling shoulders into impact… The downswing pivot increases in speed as it approaches impact… Most “slicers” thrust too hard at the start of their downswing. Create power at the bottom, NOT from the top. Don’t get anxious and wait a little longer and watch what happens! ;o) I feel I am swinging my best when I feel a “glide” or “float” in transition |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Swing Speed Estimate
Depends whether you hit or swing? Both will utilise lag but in 2 different manners Some guys power with the left side other guys power through with the right…. Some have fast hands but you better be using a lot more than just hands when you are hitting against someone who stands 6’5+ and weighing in at 140-160 kgs Clubhead speed is good but so is hitting the ball in the middle of the clubface with the optimal launch angle and low spin rate… creating a ‘floater’ (the feeling of the ball just jumping off the clubhead/shaft with no feel from the face) They are the balls that just keep going…. The better you can do that the longer you will be! If I swing at 145 mphs and the contact is only 60% efficient and the spin rate is high. A guy who swings at 130 mph with a 95% pure strike that “floats” will win all day long. Speed is something but it isn’t everything…. Pure it and you will hit your best drives Its consistant length round after round not crazy long on 1-2 rounds… ;) AB |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Swing Speed Estimate
A good ball speed for Long driver is in the 190-210 mph range (321-355km/h) Damn its quick when you put it into km/h… lol… 140 mph ball speed (238 km/h) is right on the average though phantom. You look at a power transfer rate of 1.4 to 1.5 from clubhead speed to ball speed. 140 mph ball speed results from a clubhead speed of between 93-100 mph hour 200 mph ball speed has the club travelling between 133-142 mph… |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Driver shafts Hey Hate the Ball, Mate that is impressive. There are so many options when it comes to shafting a driver. Get to a clubfitter mate, they are worth there weight in gold! Try different options, see what works with your loading, unloading profile! At 118 mph, I think you are beyond an Stiff shaft. High kickpoint, X flex at 70-80 grams will give you what you are looking for but that is a generalisation. That being said depends on your build and physical strength Also technique improvement can provide flatter launch conditions more than I believe equipment can. Equipment is nice, technique is vital – I got caught here big time this year! Options used by LD guys include UST V2 LD, Harrison, Graman, House of Forged, N-forcer shaft, Accuflex (non existant anymore), Grafalloy Blue the list goes on and on. Go see someone who can test you launch conditions, has an eye for good technique and can let you try some options. Hope that helps? AB |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Swing Speed Estimate Okay guys I cant bit my tongue! Let’s get real here, we all (some more than others!) over estimate how far we hit the ball! A general equation of swing speed (with a driver) to distance carry is approximately: Every 1 mph of increased golf swing speed translates into about 2.5 yards of distance add 10% for roll (see graph) There are SO many other factors other than swing speed to calculate distance… eg Compression, Power Transfer Ratio, Humidity, Air temperature, ground hardness, altitude elevation, wind assistance, grass type and length in landing area, spin rate, launch angle, the list goes on and on! I am sorry to say I have realised on the Long Drive tour, numbers on a machine mean squat!! You have to be able to do it when it counts! The competition tee vs the range tee is a different kettle of fish. We can quote numbers till the cows come home! In practice anyone can launch one, especially when you take the best shot in a 100 ball set. Yeah practice is cool hitting high 140’s swing speed, launching balls 350-380 metres, 5 irons of 232 metres (Bio saw that on flight scope saturday!). But take 6 balls onto a competition tee with people watching when it means something and you only have 6 to get the job done and the results are FAR DIFFERENT! Sorry for the negativity of this post but let’s not quote “career shots”. When it counts is all that ever counts! AB |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Calling long drivers - do you use this key? Hey Whitednj I ended up having a shocker on the friday in the Re/Max qualifying and ended up going into the bottom half of the draw early and getting knocked out 2 rounds later finishing 13th… Thats golf sometimes. The saturday I came back well and finished 4th in the Pinnacle Australian Tour Championships. All in all a good result for my first year. I will finish ranked between 5 and 7 in Australia and on top in Victoria. The guys were awesome and have really helped me out, the defeat is probably the best thing that could of happen to me as now I am hungrier than ever and it will be 6 months total dedication for preparing for next year. Gym and Swing rebuild is going to be my total life commitment for the next 6 months! |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Calling long drivers - do you use this key?
No I personally dont… Bio gave me one of the best swing keys I have ever used. Well actually it is not really a swing key, it’s a job. By a job I mean, Before I hit a shot I give my mind a “job”. I pick a spot on the grid (fairway), I picture the tradjectory and that is what I let my mind focus on. Leave the mind idle and it starts to work of its own accord. Whether this is a case of 101 swing thoughts or negative outcomes. I look at the ball as a whole. The ball to me currently (and when I hit at my best) is part of a journey not a destination. I rotate through the ball I dont swing, hit or smash “it”. I think we sometimes get guity of seeing the swing as a sequence of positions rather than a motion. I find I perform better when my key is motion, tempo or rhythm based rather than a set of static positions. Don’t steer is what I recently learned at the Nationals. Pick a target, pick a tradjectory, think a motion thought rather than a positional one… It got me out of one hell of a jam!! ;) |

Topic: Golf Talk / Aussie Long Drive Champs @ Penrith LOL…. Yes that sounds like the Animal but I am so going to ROOT him this weekend, I just told him not to fight it because I like it even more!!! lol… Yeah the big 3 mate are all top quality blokes, I owe them all a lot for the help and interest they have showed in my development. Yeah I might not be a threat to take it out this year – even though I am going to try – but my goal has always been 2009 and I am just happy to have achieved what I have this year Watch this space in 2009 ;) |

Thanks for the heads up jon, I will pass it on for you… Just so you are perhaps better informed I am already ranked #7 in over all rankings. This includes a third of 2007 points. 2008 is my first season, where I have placed no worse than 6th. I have the 3rd highest number of points for 2008. Perhaps maybe a few “big” names may need to get past me too…. ;) AB |

Topic: Golf Talk / WA Long Driver Like newspaper articles, dont always believe what you read…. Ian is a great long driver and will definitely be in the mix…. just a bit funny when he actually hit his drive with a long drive driver! The guys on tour are more generous than that would have you believe.. No one who is serious has to compete with a standard driver…. With guys like Karnage Shrek and Animal around, a standard driver is not going to cut it! There is more to every story! |

Topic: Golf Talk / Aussie Long Drive Champs @ Penrith Correction that would be the 12th, 13th and 14th of September Tim: I would be putting my money on Karnage or Shrek personally. Animal has been in great form but Shrek is scary good right now and Karnage is always a big time performer! They are probably your top 3 right there! |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Doors are open at Melbourne's Golf Science Centre Hey Guys, Just wanted to let everyone know that the doors at the Melbourne Golf Science centre are officially open. The place not only looks amazing but the technology there has to be seen and experienced to be believed. For those that are interested it is located on Bay Rd in Sandringham and is well worth the trip. Make sure you get down there and say G’day to Bio (aka Scotty!), he is phenomenal at tuning your golf swing into something you would have never believed possible… I know a few from ISG are already going there now for lessons. I look forward to seeing any and all of you down there over the next few months, as I will be training there full time come the end of the long drive season preparing for a full assault in 2009. AB |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Measuring a driver? If you want a quick basic method for driver measurement measure from the grip end to the base of the driver running along behind the shaft. If you vert it, LDA measurement, stand it against the wall so the driver is standing upright measure from floor to top of the grip! |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Weight plug in butt end of shaft Im sure a club fitter will get on here and provide the technical answer but it is use to alter the swingweight and moment of inertia. Adding weight at either end changes the dynamic balance of a club making it feel heavier or lighter when swinging. The theory is that adding weight at the grip end will balance out the club making it feel lighter to swing. The jury is still out. I know some guys who have tried it and it has made no difference to their clubhead speed or distance. This is not to say it doesn’t work, it might work for accuracy…? I don’t know. Like I said Im sure one of our club fitting gurus can shed more light on the matter! |
