Does Boz sell computers too?

VTTP #009

Sure does.

These things are great – they are very shiny and I haven’t lost one in the rough for simply ages. Nice and cheap, but I did lose my mouse to a big crow a while back.

So after playing a range of balls recently – provvy; provyX; srixonZstar; srixonZstarXV; srixonXVyellow, I decided to take the Vision UVX3 for a run, just to see the what/how/where was shaping up.
So the UVX3 is a little clickier or harsher off the irons but no real difference on the driver and a touch so off the driver.
Distance is not an issue…just as long as all the afore-mentioned balls on driver and irons.
Good behaviour around the greens and nice sharp stop on full-swing irons. Back to the predictable Vision roll-out on shorter swings, except my problem was that I wasn’t predicting it leaving myself some longer putts.
And I made a real hash of my wedges dumping at least 4 in the bunker but that is not the balls fault!
I think I’ll run with the Vision ball for a few rounds to get some averages recorded to compare against the premium balls, but I reckon the performance is there, and the price is right…!

Crown prototype
Got to try out the ‘crown’ tour today. It didn’t get the full 18, due to fear of crows, but a good run nevertheless.
I started on the practice green with it.
Super impressed with its ‘soft’ feel and quiet tone of the putter. Roll out was what I was use to so no need for adjustment.
Wedge shots, including during the round, all seemed to get a higher trajectory than my usual.(similar to what I got with the Fantom HiSoft)
Long irons and woods. No change.

The ball played well but I wouldn’t use it as there seemed to be no gain for me to require a change. Not the balls fault. The biggest feel difference was the short game. The putting ‘note’ was something I could easily get use to but didn’t change performance. The higher loft I could see as a advantage for some but I like my current wedge shapes.
Didn’t lose it so I can replay another day. It was windy and it has little effect in the ball so I guess another positive.

So what we need to do is put our balls in a heat bag (ala F1) and swap them over every hole :)

…..

I’m pretty sure that people have been known to have “ball warmers” in their pockets… in more ways then one I’d reckon too.

Hi GP,,,,

I will have a think about it and get a more detailed post up later.

Briefly yes the cold air is thicker/heavier and the balls total
lower temperature can reduce their performance levels from
their designed optimum levels.

Distance / Feel / Spin / Cover Durability are all affected.

Cheers,
Boz

Boz,

A query if I may …. involving compression rates and cooler climates as you are “The Ball Expert”.

We all know from observation ….. that in winter the ball flies less distance

But what is the scientific reason for this ….

Is it something external to the ball that makes it fly less?

Or does the cooler climate effect the rate of compression of the ball?

If the compression rate itself changes …..... then is the difference quantifyable in terms of a reduction in compression rate on a given golf ball?

Also ….... is this “change” ........ the same across the spectrum of compression rates?

Your expert thoughts on this subject would be most appreciated.

Hi L4G,

Good question,,,,,,,, firstly the urethane balls fit into two groups
at the moment TPU (flexible plastic like) say Zstar and then the
RIM (rubber like) say a ProV1.

The TPU’s were not as spinny or soft as the RIM’s for a number
of years but in recent times they are now very close together and
are to pick the difference in performance terms.

I like the TPU a lot more as it allows me to create new colours
and looks where as the RIM needs to be painted as it is mainly
a dull white colour material that reminds me of balata.

Now to answer the question,,, if the injection moulded TPU
designs are so close to other Tour balls it is not that hard to
change the material of the cover to a Ionomer plastic and
basically retain the multilayer structure of the Tour ball to
create your 2nd tier design and economise on your production
costs.

So the Diablo Tour is very close to the Chrome, the B330S is
very close to the B330RX ,,,,,the the core compression is lower
for regular players and the cover is a bit more durable.

This is partly the reason why some of the top tier designs are
also cheaper than ever as it is not such a leap above the 2nd
tier balls.

The stand out exception is Titleist, they don’t make a proper
twin cover 2nd tier performance ball.

They have designed the NXT Tour and NXT Tour S as complex
2 piece designs ( twin core and one medium thick cover)
because they don’t want to hurt their ProV1 sales with an
alternative ball that can spin almost as much around the green.

They call it Multilayer but it is really just a multi component structure with a soft surlyn cover and as such very different
from the ProV1 / X.

You will hear about more 5 piece and now a 6 piece structure
in the market to try and get the prices back up in the future but
performance ball players should mainly look for twin cover
structures as that is the key to spin ,,,,,,4 / 5 / 6 layers do not
add anything to a balls performance from what I have seen to
date.

The Taylor Made 5 piece designs are good but really only as
good as their earlier TM Black balls which were good, just dull
in colour and their cover sheared up a bit but overall not bad at
all.

Cheers,
Boz

Hi Boz,

Hex Chrome+
Hex Diablo

Which of your balls are these closest to? – I got some Diablo’s for hitting a Razr Fit Xtreme at Thornleigh (it was mine :)) and I decided to give them a hit last weekend. For what I would call a ‘non-players’ ball, I was very impressed. Driver felt great (expected) and the ball behaved quite well around the green (they were lightly cored).

Is the line between the premium pill and the non-premium getting that much thinner now?...

Cheers mate.

Hi Guys,

Have a look at this video and then start to understand how hard
it is for regular players to hit consistent shots.

Hand strength / Grip quality / Glove quality all have a major
input into the quality of the contact you get to make with the
ball at impact.

This ball was a cracker!!

I think I was a very, very lucky little boy, cause I got to try 2 different versions of it…..
Cover cut up more than the PT ball, which is expected with the cover, but prob not quite as much as other premium balls.
certainly had some spin in it though…..
(wouldn’t cut up like that now with m new irons though!!)

Interesting you rate 888 and Pt as much the same…I rated the (white) PT much better than the (UV) 888
Never mind…waiting with much anticipation for the PT 1.02

I like the look of the new balls. Apart from that pretty much as I expected although thought the X3 might have been a little higher than that.
Seeing as I rate the B330 RXs the X4 sounds really interesting.
I appreciate What you say about Limited real world Information.
I believe very little of what I read re Marketing spiel.

Hi Pom,

I spoke to Peg about this last night and the thing to
take into account is the very limited real world information
that comes from the actual format specifications involved.

Here is a very general guide to perhaps where things stand
at present and perhaps the next Vision balls,

Where we sit right now when looking at the graph the way it
is constructed,

Gel X -X3 – between 19 and 24 on the grid.
Gel V – UV Yellow – between 19 and 30 on the grid
Gel V – Arctic / Pinky / Gel – around 25 on the grid

The Prototypes,

808 v1.01 – approx. 30,
X4 v1.02 – approx. 3,
PT / 888 v1.02- approx. 2

Cheers,
Boz

Although I rarely look at articles on golf balls & how much they do this or that. I happened to look at a thread that included a spin rate chart . I was interested to note that all the balls that I have found I like the feel of around the greens are on the high end of that chart.
Boz, Is there any way you could add the spin rates of the Vision Balls for comparison purposes?
http://www.golfwrx.com/forums/topic/838872-2013-hot-list-balls-spin-rate-chart/
I reckon I have a pretty good idea where most of the Vision range belong but would be really interested to find out if I am right.

For anybody in the NW Sydney area that needs some Vision balls, or even a Vision glove, Richmond Golf Course has got plenty of both…....

Seem to be seeing them pop up at more and more pro shops lately…. Good to see.

That’s why I am still chasing the dream.

The UV Yellow is an amazing colour I just need the feel to be
adjusted to take the lead in converting players from old school
white to a better visible performing ball colour in Yellow but that
is the right type of yellow with research to back it up.

It’s happening Boz, I was a rarity when I came on course with UV balls when I started testing a few years ago I am now often playing with other member of the group with coloured balls.

It means I need to be a little more careful these days instead of just rocking up and hitting the Yellow ball.
