You see it’s all about consistent. If you aren’t playing consistent golf, then change something. I have changed my swing until I am at the point where it is working for me 90% of the time, even when I don’t get to practice I can still go out and shoot 80. I’ve played a handful of times this year, yet I did that last week. I am not saying I would go out tomorrow and repeat that, I probably wouldn’t but I would go very close, and the next time I bet I would do better.

So now I am looking at my clubs again, you see, my swing is settling into place. Speed and set up, posture is all good, now I need clubs that match that consistency. I don’t want clubs that go in and out with their feel. Blades have that sharpness that gives me the feedback I need.

If I need to swap and change, build and rebuild, then I will. I am confident I can reach a point where I am happy with the consistency of my irons, but I bet a weeks pay, they will be different in many ways, just like my woods. They will be different, but they will all feel the same, Good….

If you look in most high end players bags I bet you will find a miss matched set of irons.

I have seen a few pros with 2,3,4 irons that are different to the set as a sort of driving iron set up or for the low ball hitters to help get in the air. Never seen a set with a 5 and 7 different though.

And the pros that do have different clubs are generally ones where you can mix and match your set a bit, like Titleist 690CB and MB or Mizuno MP-30, MP33… or the Wishon 550’s if you go component.

They are never just random clubs thrown together.

Most out there one I have seen was Camillo Villegas who had a really chunky callaway 2 iron in a set of titleist players irons. Was instead of a hybrid.

I’m not saying throw random clubs together, I’m saying I use what works for me… why leave a club in your bag that doesn’t work? That’s dumb, number 1 dumb if you ask me… when a club doesn’t work I look for a replacement. It’s why I now have a hybrid in my bag. Why my driver now has an X-stiff shaft… I know guys change their irons every week, they are looking to find the best thing for them, the club that suits their game and their mind set. It might just be a change in swing weight, or a different off set, what ever works for you is good for you… don’t stick with a perfectly matched set of irons because that’s the done thing…

My 3i like I said I can do anything with it, my 4i is perfectly matched to it, but I hate it, that has nothing to do with mind problems, for some reason it doesn’t work with my feel. All my irons go in and out with feel, except my 3i, so that is why I am looking to change back to blades. A coincidence that the 3i is the closest thing in the set to a blade? Probably, and most likely the reason I like it so much…

I stick with my club pro through thick and thin… how can you go past someone you have a beer with, play golf with, schmooze with, trust your most initimate…well maybe not, let your kids play with his kids, take tips off, cry on their shoulder, shit they should be closer than your barber or tattooist!!!!

My pro is always one of my best mates… he lets me take clubs on spec, pay them off using vouchers I win in competition, chuck demo clubs my way when they come up…. boy oh boy, I can’t understand why anyone would attempt to build a relationship with the internet when you have mate working in your footpath to the first tee…..

Personally I think they are like perimeter weighted irons, they just give you another option.

I was playing with a 12 marker last year, good friend now, who had just swapped to a full set of iron hybrids. First game he had with them, we were playing together, he hated them, and I could see why. By the end of the 18 he was starting to get some decent golf going with them but they were way to much work for him. It was a complete mind set change. He was hooking everything and lost a lot of distance by the time he worked out how to hit them straight.

Like I said before, reactive not proactive. It’s obvious, and why it was great when we had the world number one… I wouldn’t be surprised if the powers that be believe we need another world number one to get golf back on track in Australia.

Having worked as an armed guard, I was surprised to hear these guys had actually shot a robber. It’s a last resort actually pulling your weapon, and we were taught that unless there was the risk of death to an innocent then it never happens…. of course if someone pointed a gun at me or one of my mates, then I’d shoot…

I am going to change the heads on my current irons back to blades, BUT I WILL be keeping the three iron exactly the way it is. It does what I want it too, I never miss hit it, I can shape it left or right, high or low, I can hit it with back spin, or roll… this not so much with the rest of my irons…

If you look in most high end players bags I bet you will find a miss matched set of irons. I’ve always had my favourite clubs that will never leave my bag, except on pain of death (the clubs that is).

I have three different woods, with three different shafts, why not do it with irons? My putter doesn’t match the rest of my bag either, when you play by feel the way I do, its more important that the club works in my hands….

Of course having said that there is a but, that’s the grips, I like to keep my grips the same (apart from the putter of course) and the length, and shafts similar. By similar I mean my wedges all have the same shafts, but they are different to my irons… the length is the same, I will be looking at that in the near future though, checking swing weights etc to keep some consistency with the rest of my bag….

58 and 56 points… long time ago but. various other scores ranging down to 21…. so it isn’t all good news.
