Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Clubface Issues

I have been missing my target quite a bit of late , mainly left but occasionly right as well. The ball flight does not indicate a hook as it goes straight from club to destination. Playing partners have confirmed my set up is square to target so I can only presume clubface is closed at impact. If this is the case would this not cause the ball to hook?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Arms just hang loosely

Just watching the Aust Masters on TV on the weekend and the one thing I noticed more than anything was when the camera was behind the player how straight the players arms hung down. Not so much with the drivers but all the other irons it appeared the shoulders and hands were in line and the arms were not angled out towards the ball at all.

When I tried to emulate this down the range I noticed my there is only about 4 or 5 inches of room between end of club and belt buckle and it did help to keep the right elbow in closer to right hip and stop me coming over the top.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Tees and Physics

Alright guys I get the message… More wheaties it is.

ps, Why have different surface areas on tees if it has no bearing on the shot.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Tees and Physics

Ok, one from left field here.

Ordered some tees from ebay but when they arrived they were not what I expected as the head of the tee’s had quite a larger surface area than I am used to.

Anway took them down the range and noticed nearly all my shots going a lot lower (but straighter) and about 20m less than when I was using conventional tees.

My question is can the surface area of a tee affect your shot that much or am I imagining things.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Interpreting Distance Indicators

Muntz, cant agree more about the distance to a dogleg. Nothing worse than finally getting one to go long down the middle only to overshoot the dogleg and end up in the rough. Particulary on course your not familiar with.

I know how far each of my clubs go but I guess the distance judgement comes with experience?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Interpreting Distance Indicators

Being relatively new to the game and at this stage spending lots of time on the range and little on the course can someone please clarify the following.

When the card says a hole is 170m where is that measured from, eg back of tee box to pin or tee box markers to front of green or?

Same for the 150m markers. Is that to front of green or pin.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Hand position manipulation

Is there any requirement in the takeaway for the hands to be manipulated into the correct position at top of swing (eg fanned open) or is it as simple as just taking the arms back using your natural shoulder rotation?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Rotation killer

Good point Guru, obviously if the perpendicular to target line stance allows a free rotation back it has to have the opposite effect on follow through.

So how many degrees open is the optimum?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Rotation killer

Dont know if I am on the right track here but can your rotation be killed by having your front foot pointing too open. Just having a few practice swings here at work I notice I can get a nice free rotation when the front foot is pointed at right angles to target line

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Back to target at top of swing

I have noticed over time my rotation in my backswing has diminished and was just wondering should you always be aiming to get your back to target for all clubs (assuming a full swing)

I just noticed it this morning and by working on a fuller rotation added another 20m to my shots.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Maintaining Forward Tilt

Does anyone have any drills to ensure your forward tilt is not disturbed or pulled up during the swing , particular on the takeaway when it feels like my arms are pulling my torso up and back.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Golf coach in Adelaide

Can you hear them, what are they saying ?

Their screaming “Your Shit, Give the game away!!

Seriously, I’m not good at these puzzles. When I can hit 10 balls with the same club and land them all in a reasonably tight cluster is when I’m happy and then I move on to the next club.

I guess what I’m trying to say is results are the only guide to whether you are on the right track.

Great post Hibore,
I appreciate the effort.

True what you say about sticking to one coach. I’ve seen 3 and they all want me to hold the club a different way! Just need to figure which one is best for me.

Norm,

When you say your trying to keep your back to the ball as long as possible do you mean keeping your back to target?

Thanks Hibore, thats a pretty impressive improvement. How often did you get lessons and how often did you play/practice to achieve that.

Also, from someone starting where you once were 27+ what would you suggest is the most important thing to work on?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Getting weight ratio balance correct

My pro has told me to take the posture as if I am sitting on a bar stool with bum sticking out but doing this feels as if I have too much weight on my heels which prevents me from staying down through swing.

Just experimenting at the range this morning I deliberatley put more weight on the balls of my feet which helped me stay down and I actually hit some good shots. To assume this position and also keep the bum out required me to have more bend in the knees.

What is the ideal weight ratio and what part of the feet should you feel pressure on during the different stages of the swing.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Head movement during hip bump

Is it ok for the head to move slightly behind the ball at start of downswing. When practicing my swing in front of a mirror this occurs simutaneously as the hip bumps forward. Probably about 5cm.

Or should it remain set in stone until impact?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Breaking tees

I use plastic tees. Cant break them.

Are there any advantageous using the wooden tees over plastic?

ps, should the tee end up in a particular spot. Mine often land 5 metres behind me.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Hitting over tall trees

Still a little trial and error as far as knowing how high I can get my wedges to go over tall trees but a little unsure if I should be playing the ball in its usual wedge position or play it forward.

I know I can hit it well in its normal position but concerned I may top it if playing too far forward looking for that extra height.

What do the good players do?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Late starters road to success....

As someone new to the game I am interested in how others who have taken the game up later in life eg 30+ have gotten their handicaps down.
I have been playing just over a year and gone from shooting 120+ to mid to high nineties. I know I can shave another 8 -10 shots if I improve my putting which is my next area to spend some serious time on.
What have others late starters done to continue their improvement to a low teen handicap which is my goal in the next 12 months.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Pop ups have returned

No problems Kiwi,

I got the sarcasm bit. It was the bit about taking the forum for granted that I took exception to.

ps, I agree about your game improving if you can understand what causes a particular bad shot. I now know most of the time why a shot didnt go where planned but it took me 90 balls out of 100 this morning to work out an issue but I finally figured it out for the last 10.
