most golfers are too arrogant, precious and overpaid for it to ever be considered. could you imagine Robert Allenby slumming it with the Australian team in the Olympic Village?..no.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / What makes for Good Practice

I decided to put off making a coffee first and put it straight up:)

Practice 2)

Start with your Wedges and hit some Basic Motion (Chip type shots with no wrist cock) to warm up. This promotes the entire package to work as one. If the arms flail around at this point in the practice time, there is zero point in hitting the ball with longer strokes. Practice your hinge (clubface control) actions here where you can see the head doing its thing. Feel those hands.

Practice 3)
One the Basic Motion is happening, lengthen the swing and add Wrist Cock to pitch more balls with. Only go past this point once that package is tight. This is Acquired Motion

At this point I stress that more time needs to be taken in the above two areas than for anything else for most golfers. OK those on single figures can hit maybe 10 balls of each. The rest of the mere morals need a bucket of each at least.

Practice 4)
Now to 3/4 swings where you now have to complete the swing with more follow through and the finish swivel to kill off that pesky bending left wrist at higher speeds.

Hints

Set up a practice station so you have something to align and relate too for ball position and direction.

At all times AIM at something. Aim at nothing and you will hit it every time.

Take more practice swings than hitting balls. There is no rule that you have to hit a ball to practice a motion.

Keep them coming guys.

awesome advice mr guru. practical and easy to implement. i will definitely be using this one.

One eyed Jack.. after giving Cliff an absolute spray for 2 pages now, I think it is time to reveal yourself and come out of hiding. Anyone can have a go on an internet forum, but its not the point of them.

I have found the topic your raised and discussion on Rossi & Stoner very interesting, but a lot of your posts have been very ordinary.

Topic: Golf Talk / Michelle Wie playing with the men

I remember reading or hearing that Michelle was signed up to compete in 8 or so PGA Tour events over a 1 – 2 year period. This being the case all she is doing is fulfilling her contractual obligations.

Her game has fallen away, and I would think that even she would be a little embarrased about the situtation. To bag her out is a little tough in my opinion and I hope she gets her game back and starts to perform on the LPGA.

I was glad to hear she played well over the 2 rounds last week. Why? as mentioned above the people around her giving her advice would be benefiting from her fame, unfortunately to her detriment.

re; the non-signing of the card – even Mark Allen said that event officials would normally mention to all competitors ‘signed your card?’.. before each one walked out the tent. Michelle isn’t the first person to do this…

Greg didn’t choke. He had no expectations, we had no expectations and I think everyone knew he was 1 round away from falling away from the pack – hes 53 not in his prime.

Topic: Golf Talk / How many of you Aussies are "sitting up late"?

i stayed up watching the tour de france flicking over to the golf. once the tour race was over, it was pretty clear Normans run had ended – and I went to bed. I don’t mind formula1 either, but once Webber was out, i didn’t tune in again. great night for sport lovers though.

Topic: Golf Talk / Norman, Scott and Allenby top Open field

my predictions…

Greg will make the cut but fall away – no top 10 for him

Adam Scott will fall away and finish in the top 20, but no top 10 for him.

Robert Allenby will have two average rounds before shooting a round in the 60s on the final day to see him scrape into the top 10.

Topic: Golf Talk / New golf clubs!!

just wondering.. I clubs I currently use are all steel shaft (including the driver which is very old and has a small clubhead) except for my nine iron (curtesy of my parents buying me one club at a time).

Would I be looking for a graphite Driver (from what I understand this depends on your clubhead speed – i don’t think mines tremendously quick) and steel shaft for all other clubs?

.... Also, I have never hit a hybrid in my life. I currently use driver off the tee and irons all the way (love my 3 iron).

i have noticed that most sets include a driver, 3 & 5 woods, a couple of hybrids replacing the 2-4 irons and then 5 – SW including some type of putter. just looking for suggestions – is it inevitable that I will end up carrying a couple of hybrids in the future and should I pick them up now or do I look for 3 – SW and continue on with what I am familiar with and acquire them down the track?

sounds great. can I ask then, does this mean I throw the ‘you need to get fitted’ idea out the door?

How would I know whether these clubs would suit my swing/build? (I am 5”7 & 80kgs).

Topic: Golf Talk / New golf clubs!!

just wondering.. generally, what would be the difference between a set of clubs purchased for $500 and a set purchased for $1000-$2000?

I know certain clubs can provide some margin for error and be a little more forgiving, and others obviously would provide more distance.

In addition, I know that a beginner set of clubs usually have a larger club face (the clubfaces of the clubs I am currently using are pretty small..).

At the end of the day, the clubs I have been using are very average, yet obviously, I have seen others get around with a clubs that have all the right bells & whistles, yet their game does not measure up to whats in the back, if you know what I mean. So.. what is the real difference? (again please forgive these basic questions..)

i like badds as well.

i don’t really dislike any golfers, but i can say that i certainly don’t love Mickleson, as his demeanour suggests he is his number 1 fan.

In addition, I am not really liking Kenny Perry of late, as this Ryder Cup vs Golf major issue is really bugging me. Kenny – i don’t care whether you make the Ryder cup or how well you play there – all that really matters is the number of majors you win at the end of your career – wake up!

Topic: Golf Talk / New golf clubs!!

hello all,

I know it probably is the correct place to be posting this, however, I am happy to say this one is a little urgent :)

its my 30th tomorrow and my wife has decided to buy me a new set of clubs!!! I am pretty wrapped. She has even suggested I get fitted! :)

I am pretty much a beginner (been playing for 7 mths and hit around 105-110) and would like some advice as where to go – obviously for great advice and reasonable prices. I’m located in the northern suburbs of melbourne.

My wife has called the local house of golf shop (in epping) and drummond golf (in preston I think).

what would people suggest? We’re not millionaires and would be looking to spend under $500. Not sure how this will limit us.

anyway, any advice/help would be appreciated.

ben
