Topic: Fantom Ball Test - 2008 Oz

Hi Sonab,

Thanks for taking the time to get the information down
as it helps with my current work, plus the detail is excellent.

Hi Blue,

No problems at all as I know we are all time poor nowadays.:-(

What I like to hear is that the balls are indentified as being so
different and that certain types really do make a difference
over others, good job.

Thanks Guys,
Cheers.
Boz.

Topic: Fantom Ball Test - 2008 Oz

Boz,

Sorry about the delay in writing a review but with 4 weeks betweens rounds at the moment it has been hard to test all of them. I will not go into as much detail as other people have because I am not that good of golfer but here goes.

I have played three rounds using the 3 different types of Fantoms. The ball I was most impressed with was the Hi-Soft. The feel off the club was good from tee to green. It felt that I got about the same distance off the tee as my usual ball, Nike Mojo. The feel off my irons was good and chipping was excellent, able to pull the ball up a lot quicker then the Mojos. Putting was good, better feel then the Pro Distance and Power Control.

To me, and this is just my opinion, the other 2 balls did not feel quite right, do not know what it was but I just did not like them. While I don’t have any real complaints about them I will be buying the Hi Soft next time I need some more balls.

Overall I would recommend the Hi Soft to anyone who uses something like the Mojo or Laddie type ball. In comparison to the Mojos I could not find any difference and as I said before when I run out of Mojos I will be looking at buying the Fantom Hi Soft.

Thanks for the chance to test the balls and the cap has received many comments.

Look forward to buying an Australian product that works well.

Keep up the good work.

Topic: Fantom Ball Test - 2008 Oz

played the high soft and the tour lady at the west on the weekend,

High soft
feels solid on the driver was getting reasonable distance with it most of the time and easy to stay straight, longer irons seemed to be a club shorter than my current ball but quite controllable, shorter irons good without a lot of drama, chipping also felt solid, I felt a little more comfortable with chipping this week I have been practicing keeping my left wrist flat and firm with a few practice chips each morning I hope that this will be productive time spent over winter given that I haven’t much other time during the week to get outside.
putting was also fine.
all in all probably a ball i should be playing, I just wasn’t finding myself that inspired with it even tho I shot a respectable round with it, it is quite like the laddie in a lot of ways which may be why I was able to produce a solid result with it.

Tour lady
first drive felt really soft went a respectable distance but cut the cover quite noticeably, other drives also felt good but she is a fickle woman diving off to the bushes for some rough tree action on the first bounce on 3 occasions. this and more damage from the short irons meant I had to retire her at the 15th hole, she probably would have lasted better on a softer course.. maybe a couple of rounds at Trentham but not more than a round at Buninyong.
other than the durability I really liked the lady, she seemed to have a natural instinct for finding the hole when putting, and had a good amount of spin when required. I was able to put more work on the Lady than the Soft, this is what I am enjoying even tho I still have a lot to learn

I don’t think I will be returning to that course in a hurry, at least not until there is a lot more rain and the grass has had time to grow,

Hi Guys,

Brad at LIND Golf and Aaron at Squizzy’s GolfBalls will be
stocking the Fantom balls from next week.

The prices will be as planned in the sub $30 area plus deals
for two dozen buys.

I will also continue my sampling exercise with Rebel Sports
and Amart Allsports.

Topic: Top three reasons for supporting your home course??

Was at The National last Sunday 18 May 08 and as we drove in, the view was JUST INCREDIBLE from the high part of the access road.

Don’t think you can get such view even in Scotland !!!!.

Pity it is so far away, and we could only see a golf cart out there from the club house. I wonder about the cost of maintenance for 3 courses, lucky there are lots of paying members that play maybe 3 times a year.

It is truelly under utilised.

Topic: Fantom Ball Test - 2008 Oz

finally got a chance to get out on a course on the weekend.
tried the power control against an e6+

I was surprised at how similar they are to play the PC ending up invariably about 1-3m behind the e6 from the drive and about the same on full irons
I started the round badly with a slice into the fence with the PC it didn’t show any ill effects from that, I could feel I was a little over when taking my practice swing i should really have taken more time to settle that before having a swipe. the e6 was straight and a fairly nice shot.
What really picked up my spirits was the second hole, a par 3 up a little rise, using a 7 I hit the e6 with a really nice fizzing sound ending up a meter past the hole, what really gave me pleasure was hitting the PC with the same sound ending a meter this side of the hole, i was able to make birdie with both balls and was feeling pretty chuffed with myself.
I could not really tell any difference in the feel from the driver and apart from meeting the fence on the first hole PC was well behaved,
with irons I almost felt that the PC was slightly softer than the e6 but the results where consistent.

Chipping is really something I need to work on I still get myself in situations where i do not know how the ball is going to behave, it is where i give up a lot of shots, i don’t know if my comments in this area would help, neither ball gave me much joy on the day in this department.

The PC felt good when putting except for two instances where it felt really spongy and didn’t seem to roll as far as i expected, i tried to reproduce the effect both on the green and at home on the carpet but was not able to do so.

neither ball showed much wear after the round, but I don’t really have any clubs that slice the ball up,

All in all I would definitely recommend and use the PC when they become available.

Hi Nick,

Thanks for the report, the HiSoft is a good value ball and
is very underrated.

I havn’t decided when I am going to start selling them yet.

They will sell for about $25 per dozen.

I will advise ASAP when I get it sorted as to where I will be
selling them through.

Penrith GC

Positives
1. Great layout and length,
2. Still pretty good value (just gone up to just below $1000),
3. Great members (always someone to have a beer with)

Negatives
1. Proshop needs improvement,
2. Bunkers need work (although this has slowly started to happen with improved drainage and sand replacement on some holes),
3. Needs some extra finances to ‘tidy up around the edges a bit’ (course is great, but some of the outer areas and paths of the course look a bit ugly from the outside)

Queanbeyan Golf Course

1. Tight challenging course that forces you to improve your course management
2. Cheap membership fees for what you get – 2 practice fairways, good members, good proshop
3. Well kept course with forethought for the future in regard to water restrictions

Was a member at Queanbeyan for many years, lovely course, brilliant fairways, fantastic greens (although some are limited as to pin position) beautiful clubhouse with a lovely view over the 18th and the BEST Resches on tap bar none…I miss it…

Hi Mouldy,

I don’t see it making the shops till July. I would personnally
look at buying some Arctic whites from 1st May at Rebel and
you will get cap / 7 x Fantom’s ( Power Distance x 3) plus tee
pack.

or

Send me a note and I will see what I can do from the warehouse.

I’m just glad you really can see a variation in all the balls.

Talk soon,
Boz.

Topic: Fantom Ball Test - 2008 Oz

G’day Boz
Since relegating the Power Control (PC) and Power Distance (PD) to the shag bag I had a look at old threads and have tried Laddie’s and Optima TS searching for the most suitable ball for my game. IMO the Laddie does not match up to either due to its increased driver side spin. The Optima is very very similar in performance to the PC, so much so it could be a clone. The only difference is that the Optima is much more durable. Any idea on when the PD, which I really liked, will make it to market ?

Topic: Top three reasons for supporting your home course??

Wyong GC, Central Coast

Pro:
1. Members are just fantastic….always have fun when I play there
2. Course is usually in fantastic condition and is a real test
3. Subs are very reasonable
4. Less than 5 minutes from home

Con:
1. Doesn’t handle the water too well, some of the holes get fairly boggy
2. Bunkers cop it when it rains and they don’t play very well
3. Can only think of 2…besides, added an extra Pro :)

I’m a member of Magenta Shores, Central Coast, NSW

Top 3 things:
1. great course – stunning architecture, location, and challenging for
2. great staff at the course, very friendly.
3. will only get better once the course starts to settle.

Top 3 things to hope for in 2008:
1. more people play the course
2. extend cart paths, to prevent wear from carts on the course (which is planned, but I’m impatient)
3. I actually hit my handicap during competition.

Have a merry Xmas everyone, and hit em straight and long in 2008!

I’ll play if you invite me….I only live down the road. :)

Obviously no hole in ones yet either, as I know that must
have been on your mind.

You know I am really pushing the UV-X2 because I want
to play it more than I want to play a white ball.

Cheers,
Boz :-)

Looking forward to that Boz, have moved on to the Experts now and love them, they are still easier to see (when you are focused on the game) than normal white balls but I like the ease of seeing the UV.

Around the greens I am getting the ball to stop pretty quickly but I can’t review distance until I start hitting the ball properly of the tee :)
