Topic: Golf Talk / Are Private courses harder than public??? I can relate to my own experience moving from playing public tracks like Burswood, Wembley etc to a private club at WAGC. WAGC is a par 70 which some people automatically think must be ‘easy’. Two features make it particularly difficult in my opinion - 1. Length, even for a ‘short’ course. An example is the 1st hole, a 220m par 3 with water on the left and OOB on the right. Also a number of the par 4’s are over 400m long which mean hitting driver, long iron into a green if you can even make it in 2. 2. Green complexes – every green is raised and surrounded by bunkers. Greens normally play hard and very fast so stopping your ball from certain lies/sides of the green is almost impossible. Short side yourself and watch the strokes rack up quickly. Both of these aspects i reckon combine for quite a few strokes different. Also somewhere such as Joondalup is a totally different course playing it off the public tees versus the member’s tees. A lot more bunkers come into play and you are having a lot longer approaches into greens adding to difficulty. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Private or Public ??
Interesting to hear how other’s handicaps have faired when they have moved from a social club to an AGU handicap? I’ve played with a couple of guys recently who are moving between the two and they reckon their AGU handicap will be at least 6 or so shots higher than the social one? (one of the guys plays of a social handicap of 6 or so and will probably end up about a 15). |

Topic: Golf Talk / The Links Kennedy Bay to reopen November re the comment in the article “Mirvac also have plans to develop the adjoining Kennedy Bay property into a fully integrated residential and tourism development, incorporating coastal and golf course residential areas” It would be really sad to see Kennedy Bay go the way of Secret Harbour and have heaps of residential adjoining the fairways…. hopefully they can find a happy medium as it would otherwise ruin the course |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / My first experience of TGM.. Guru and Dart have given you some pretty good advice there, but as someone prone to hooks and snap hooks myself maybe just check that the right hand hasn’t drifted a tad too far under the grip into a too strong position. You can even fade it with a full roll swivel as long as you get your alignments right! |

Topic: Golf Architecture / Turf? My home course has Kikuyu fairways and other than less roll on drives (a part of the course’s defence) doesn’t really bother me anywhere else. The course super does have it cut extremely low however so you are pretty much guaranteed a good lie on the fairway. We also stopped using sand to fill in divots about 18 months ago and chop in the sides instead. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Sand Buckets We used to have sand buckets at our club. Given that i also carry my bag it used to be annoying, however i found a small kidney shaped sand holder that they sold at another pro-shop nearby. Not sure of the brand but it basically clips to your bag and swings freely so that even when carrying your clubs the sand doesn’t come out everywhere. Excellent idea and cost about $20. About 18 months ago the club canned the practice of filling in divots with sand as apparently it was shown that the turf repaired better and was easier on the mowers etc not having to deal with it. Now we just chop in the sides of the divot and as long as people remember to do it, gives you a far better lie i think. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Western Australian Golf Club Tips.
You’re right, sort of. The driving range is only about 170m long so you are limited to irons (7 iron max i think the sign says but really just to ensure you aren’t hitting balls onto the road behind). There is a large practice net next to the chipping area that you can hit driver etc into which is good to use if the intention is to just loosen up. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Western Australian Golf Club Tips. Glad my tips to idgolfguy came of some use. Been a member at WAGC for about 4 years. I’m sure you will enjoy the course it is in sensational nick as per normal with the greens pretty quick at the moment. Given that you are having a hit on the Friday the tees will probably be at the front of the tee boxes as they try and preseve the back blocks for the weekend competitions. For instance the 1st hole par 3 will likely play 190-200m from the tee instead of the usual 220m on competition days. Beware of the elevation changes as most holes play signficantly uphill or downhill so you need to make some allowances in terms of club selection. Have fun ! |

Topic: Golf Talk / US PGA - Telecast
You have a choice to get Fox if you want to watch the golf live. When the free to air channels have it you are at the mercy of their programmers and whether they decide to show it delayed, on HD channels only or not at all. Perhaps not a problem for those on the east coast as for example with the british open Fox showed the coverage live up until the point that channel 9 took over. For those in WA channel 9 delayed the coverage so there was a 2 hour gap between when fox coverage finished and free to air kicked off. Under those circumstances i think that Fox should be free to continue showing it. |

Topic: Golf Talk / US PGA - Telecast YAAY!! At least for us poor saps in WA channel 9 doesn’t get to delay the ‘live’ coverage leaving a 2 hour gap between when fox finishes and ch9 picks it up (as in the recent british open coverage). Or worse still when ch10 gets it and shows it on their HD channel only. Stuff golf on free to air i say – move it all to live on fox so at least people have a choice !! |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Which Statistics Are More Important
Interesting as I find if i think ‘safety’ off the tee and hit an iron for example then 9/10 will still go in the crap, only leaving a longer shot to the green!. Perhaps those thoughts can prompt a too negative attitude? |

Topic: Golf Talk / Got a suprise in the mail yesterday The Sunday comp i regularly play in is mixed (i.e. Male and Female members) and there are just prizes awarded for nett 1st, 2nd place etc rather than grouped on handicap or gender. This seems to make sense to me in terms of equality as i have no problems with ladies in the field. The bit which seems strange though is that they still play off their own tees (particularly when the course is setup for an important event and playing off the tips). Why shouldn’t women play off the same tees as men if they are going to be in the same comp but then have a higher handicap if required to not disadvantage them? |

Topic: Golf Talk / The Cut, in trouble? I’m a member at the WA Golf Club and we have some fairly simple rules when it comes to guests. - I can bring a guest along for social play outside of competition times and they pay a guest fee (around $35 for 18 holes which equates to what you would pay on a normal public track). Each guest is restricted to 6 rounds? per year max (although this would need to work on the honour system as i’m sure it is not formally tracked by anyone) - You can’t bring a guest on peak comp days e.g. Saturdays. You can bring one on a Sunday to play in the comp as long as they have an official handicap and it is approved in advance by the club captain (this avoids guests taking up member’s comp tee times) So basically if you aren’t stopping another member from getting access to the course then you are welcome to bring visitors along which also results in more money for the club. I brought along some business colleagues recently who hadn’t played for a while and purchased balls, tees, gear etc from the pro shop all valuable income |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Strong vs Weak Grip
I’ve recently gone back to a ‘slightly stronger’ than neutral grip recently after playing with something reasonably weak for a while. Results have been significantly better especially mid to short iron contact and compression. For whatever reason have found a bit of the opposite though with the longer clubs if it is a tad strong i.e. a bit hook prone and not as much distance |

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / The Biggest Cut
Back out on the weekend after a week off. Played to the new handicap which was good – off the tips as well as penants were on in the afternoon. 30 putts today which i was still pretty happy with, drained a few monsters and the greens were very fast. Wasted a lot of shots chipping as the distance control was pretty ordinary given the fast greens and tight pin positions.. if i got up and down everytime would have shot mid 70’s! |
