Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / What Has Happened to the Forward Press?

I also use a forward press. I’ve only started using it for around the past twelve months, since I’ve been seeing the club pro. As Guru mentioned earlier, it helps me at impact, so far, I reckon I’ve gained at least an extra 10m for all irons. Sometimes, however, it can cause me to hook, especially with my hybrids, but they’re improving too. Just gotta learn to chase it out after impact.

Topic: Golf Talk / Master's Playoff

I was at the masters on Sunday and witnessed the play-off. Agree with the pin position, sad to see Fraser lose it with a bogey, better to see birdies win tournaments. Well done to Pamps though! Apparently I was on the telly too during the playoff, anyone know where I can see any footage?

Topic: Golf Talk / 2 to 3 day golf escape... where would you go?

Live in the Mornington Peninsula area. Great courses, some reasonable, others expensive. Agree with Voss, restaurants are great and the Bays in Mornington is great on a weekend. As far as courses go, Flinders is fantastic for around $35 a round i think. You could also stay at Cape Schank, RACV owned with a golf course plus I think they have spa stuff for the girls too. Peninsula Hot Springs spa retreat is pretty good, my Mrs and I have been there and it’s pretty good for both guys and gals.

Otherwise, you could always leave the girls behind and head for the Murray River region. Not much there for them to do but the golf courses are fantastic, some real gems. Happy travels and straight hitting.

No guessing who I follow then. So, bring it on, give us your best, I’m sure it’s nothing we haven’t heard before, water of a ducks back (or magpies) :) Btw jane mac who do you follow out of interest? Good luck to the Saints, they certainly kicked straighter then we did!

Just trust it!

Pies fan, whats your opinion on pies decision to suspend so close to finals,I was p^**#@d off,if they had to punish them surely they could have done it some other way and other time ,but they bowed to media pressure and forgot about supporters,,methinks maybe didda should start driving himself around lol

Brownman, I believe Collingwood acted too quickly, perhaps it was due to media pressure, or maybe it was the fact the boys lied. When the story first came out (before the lying), from memory, the club only fined them, but after it was discovered they lied, they acted too fast. To suspend the two for finals was stupid. As bad as we were going at the time, there was a more than 50% chance we were going to play finals footy. Mick has always said that the supporters deserve the best team out there available, they shot themselves in the foot. But too bring them back, Buckley was right, that would have damaged the clubs reputation for the next 5-10 years. I think they reallised they acted too fast but couldn’t go back on their word. There’s always next year, GO PIES!

Topic: Sports Talk / Colliwobbles

Pies Fan, I’m an Essendon Supporter. I understand we will be rebuilding for a few years yet. I said Grand Final Day last year that the Cats would win this year and I am still sticking with that theory. It’s funny, the only people to disagree with me when I said it on the day were Collingwood supporters, hence the reason I was so glad to see them stumble on the weekend!
I am quite happy with the teams left though. I would be more than happy for any of them to take the flag home this year, but unless Buddy goes off his head in the Grand Final (Assuming the hawks make the big day) I can’t see anyone beating the Cats.

Jane, I must say I don’t disagree. I believe that Geelong will take the flag this year. As good as Buddy thinks he is, i can’t see him, and 21 of his mates defeating Geelong. Good luck to the Bombers next season.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Bunker Shots

If you have the spare time, practice on all surfaces and see what works for you. My h’cap is 22, but I can get out of bunkers. As a general rule, if the bunker is firm, i use a SW, however, if it’s nice and fluffy I use my 60 LW. I just adjust the length of swing according to the distance, where I make contact remains the same, about 2 inches behind the ball.

Also, by watching a video on utube of the pro at our course, I’ve learnt to keep most of my weight on my front foot, and wrap your bottom hand around the club just a little further, it aids with maintaining a clean stroke through the sand. I hope this may help, good luck!

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Your average 5 iron distance ??

5i approx. 140m, I use a hybrid 5 for around 150m. Depending on wind, up hill, down hill, 90m would either be a PW or Gap wedge.

Topic: Golf Talk / Handicap goals

Started the year off playing of 25. Have been on 21 for a few weeks, then played at 22 last weekend (21.5). I may be off 21 again next week as I had 35 points yesterday and the scores coming in were terrible! My goal was to get below 20 by the end of the year. Working on it!

Topic: Golf Equipment / What bounce is ideal for your Sand Wedge and Lob wedge?

I have a factory SW with 14 deg. I use it for long range bunker shots. My LW has 6 deg. I use it for approach shots and short range bunker shots. I think it’s a personal thing, if possible, try a few of each.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Powerblit n Cougar Clubs

KYC,

I have been using a set of Powerbilt Protracs (irons) for around 4-5 years now and am pretty pleased with them. They were my first full set purchased and as with you, fitted my budget. I’ve only been a member of a club for about 18 months so for my ability (off 21), they seem ok. I’ve added clubs to the set, ie Powerbilt hybrids and wedges and was fitted for Ben Hogan driver, love it too. I can’t see my self buying a new set for a few more years yet, I’ll improve first, and as my game gets better, I may consider upgrading. I have a mate who has a set of Cougar clubs, including woods, but he hardly ever plays, so I can’t really say how they perform. I hope this helps, happy golfing

Topic: Golf Talk / Motivation

Great topic Mr Noisy (remind me to never play with you btw, I prefer silence on the tee). I agree with AB’s post. Winning is a bonus, not the be all and end all. I personally go out to better my self, to try and better my previous score of whatever the comp may be on the day. As AB said, I can’t control what the next bloke does. I play of 21 atm, I want to get down below 20 by the end of the year, I was off 25 six months ago. I practise when I can and play most Saturdays.

I have to admit though, when I went out to 25, I wasn’t enjoying my golf at all. I wanted to play, but knew that I would play bad and therefore annoy my playing partners, that is why I wasn’t enjoying it. I thought, well, I want to play, but how can I “motivate” my self to want to play better. I spoke to the club pro. After a hand full of lessons (still continuing) he has given me the belief that I can be better, and I have now regained the hunger to improve my game and know that the lower handicaps will come, eventually.

Motivation for me now comes from the belief that I can be better, “My score this round WILL be better than the last”, I tell my self. If it isn’t, I’ll go back to the practice fairway. For all you 20+ handicappers out there, join me in saying “MY HANDICAP WILL COME DOWN!!!”

Topic: Golf Equipment / Bunker shots with a 60 degree wedge?

Couldn’t hit a SW out of a bunker, went to a 60LW, worked fine. Learnt how to play a bunker properly, now gone back to a SW? Now I’m really confused! Think I’ll practice with each and see how far and how they land to determine which one I’ll use for a particular shot.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Fake Odyssey 2-ball putters on Ebay

If you don’t mind me asking, what distinguishing features gave it away as a fake?

Henno,

The saturn ring was plastic, that was the main reason, plus the putter head looked too “home-made”. They used a legit grip and head cover, not too sure about the shaft, it looked ok, but the head was just not right. I compared it with actual Odyssey pics and it didn’t come close. I did price a legit one in a store, it was around $320.

I did use my money for a deposit on another putter, this time from a store. I changed my mind to an Odyssey 2ball White hot XG, roughly $60 cheaper than the SRT. I got the model with the line running through the 2-ball, to assist with alignment. Can’t wait to use it.

Cheers

Topic: Golf Equipment / Fake Odyssey 2-ball putters on Ebay

Just thought I should share with you all that I was ripped on Ebay recently (And I’m sure I won’t be the last). Paid $200 for a fake Odyssey SRT 2-ball putter. I won’t mention the seller’s ID, however, if you are in the market for one, don’t by from any sellers that use pictures from the Odyssey website! I was fully refunded however and used that as a deposit on a reel one. Happy golfing and happy bidding (if you dare).

Topic: Golf Equipment / Length of Golf Putter

If it aint broke, don’t fix it! Wow, a 25”, I’ve never heard of a putter being cut so short, wouldn’t that affect the weighting? I’m only 5’8” and I use a 31” (cut down from 33”). Oh well, each to their own.

Topic: Golf Equipment / What's In Your Bag?

Driver – Ben Hogan C-S3
Hybrids – Powerbilt TPS: 3(27), 4(24) & 5(21)
Irons – Powerbilt Protracs: 5 through to SW
Wedges – Powerbilt Citation: 52 & 60
Putter – (soon to be) Odyssey SRT 2-ball
Ball – Titleist NXT Tour

They’re not the most expensive going around, but when you’re off 21, they do me just fine.

Topic: Golf Equipment / 3/4 Iron replacements

Replaced my 3 & 4 irons with hybrids. They are easier to hit and suit us higher hindicappers. I also carry a #5 hybrid, but have kept my 5 iron as the hybrids tend to go that little bit further than their iron cousins.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Going backwards is it normal

I found this myself. When I started having lessons shortly after joing my club (roughly twelve months ago), I went out almost straight away, from 24 to 25. In the last six months, I have won two comps, including a monthly medal, and am now off 21. Hang in there CJB, be patient and when you can, practice what you have been taught, it may take a little while, butt improvement will come.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Odyssey SRT 2-ball putter

I’ve been told that the above putter retails for around $300, is that true? I’m thinking of upgrading my putter and I like the feel of them (A guy at my club has one). Just wondering if the guess on the retail price was correct.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / A good place for lessons in south east Melbourne?

David knows enough to really help.

Do you know David? If so, how? I’ve been having lessons with him as I’m a member at Lang Lang. Been seeing him for around 6 months on and off, I’ve come in four shots (off 21 now).

David Williams at Lang Lang Golf Club. $90 for a 1.5 hr lesson, includes video swing analysis, golf science (in lamens terms) and focuses more on impact rather than swing. Very good, highly recommend.

Correction on the price, it’s $150 for a 90 minute lesson. Still good value.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Smoothy vs Clic Gear

Don’t worry about the size of the buggy, go the smoothy. I’ve had mine for a couple of months now and love it. BTW, get the umbrella holder too, yes, it’s a smoothy brand made for the buggy. It saves a lot of time while playing in wet weather. The umbrella holder is great, it allows you to have both hands free, it just makes a world of difference. Go the Smoothy and you will never look back.

Also, the foot brake and ease of use are fantastic!

Same as some of the other replies, I paid around $180 too. Hope you bought the blue one, as the chrome will show up rust after a while. I have the black one. Happy pushing!
