Topic: Golf Talk / Perry triumphant at MFS Mid Amateur “However a bogey on the final hole opened the door for his challengers who only needed a birdie to force extra holes.” Only needed a birdie? That last hole is one of the hardest par-fours you’ll ever play – especially into the wind. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Kelly Tilghman v Tiger Woods This goes well beyond political correctness. Anyone who grew up in the US knows that “lynch” is a word with racial connotations, and that to suggest that a black person should be lynched is very offensive. Whether Tighman intended to be offensive is irrelevant – what she said was absolutely stupid and insensitive. Two weeks is a reasonable penalty. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Canadian golf The must-play in Canada is the National Golf Club. Its a men-only club and I’ve heard that some members hire hookers, get them to sit sit spreadeagled on the green then putt at the snatch rather than the hole. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Golf in Scotland 2008 Styles, if you think the Old Course is “samey”, you obviously havn’t played it enough – part of its mystique is that it takes dozens of games to understand it. I’ve been round it maybe 60 times, and still don’t know it as well as I’d like. The first time I walked it, I thought it was “samey” – now I know that none of the holes are alike. You’ll also find that most of the holes on the New are flat as well. Yes there are some good holes, you’ve forgotten the 10th which is all-world. Of course I was a blow-in, it takes generations to be a local in those parts. But whats your point? You claimed that the locals consider the New to be a better course, which just isn’t true. I spent a year playing golf with them. They will sing its praises (its the course they play most of their comps on), but a majority would not try to tell you its better than the Old. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Golf in Scotland 2008 I don’t want to make any of you jealous but I lived in St Andrews for nine months and have played the Old Course 38 times. Follow Dela’s advice and enter the ballot for the Old Course, chances are about 1/4 in June. If you miss, go to the starter’s hut around 5am and you’ll almost certainly get on as a single. In the Aberdeen area, play Cruden Bay and Royal Aberdeen. Murcar is meant to be ok, but I havn’t seen it. Styles, the New course is not superior to its neighbour, and isn’t “widely accepted” by the locals as such. Its a good course, nothing more. Kingsbarns is very expensive (£160 for visitors) but very good. Muirfield is forty-five mins from Edinburgh (so 1.5-2 hours from St Andrews), also look at Gullane (No 1), North Berwick (West) and Luffness which are in that same area. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Golf Australia to address Open shortcomings Thats the problem Andrew, they never would. There's every danger that this "new" regime is simply a "musical chairs" style reorganisation, as happened at the PGA Tour. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Golf Australia to address Open shortcomings Jim, I have to agree. Part of the problem with the AGU for years is that its been a boys-club, run into the ground by blue-bloods from the elite golf clubs. Surely now would be a good a time as ever to appoint someone from outside that group. |

Topic: Sports Talk / Spring carnival racing/punting thread stones, I don't know much about racing, but it seems pretty obvious that they'll only scratch the horse if they don't think it can win. If the track is too firm, they don't think it can win.

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / A hole’s position in a round - Matt, a poor hole is a poor hole. The first holes at Commonwealth or Victoria are woeful holes, whether played first up or later in the round (I've played both of them numerous times as my tenth for the day). The ninth on the Moonah is not quite as bad, but its a nothing hole. It might be more popular if played as the first (because you can't make double unless you do something stupid), but that wouldn't make it a better hole. To threadjack slightly, I think sets of holes might be seen differently (as a set) depending on their position. For example, RMW starts with a long four then three genuine birdie opportunities. A good player expects to be at least 2-3 under by the time he reaches the fifth tee, otherwise he's giving up shots to the field. Likewise, the first two at Ranfurlie are both birdie holes. A good player knows he needs to push on these opening holes because there's a tough stretch of holes following. Likewise at St Andrews Beach (Gunnamatta). Back to the topic, its not just the position but the context in which a hole is played. I suppose I'm contradicting myself a little. |
