Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Help - decent coach in Brisbane area

I had a peek up there the other day – so they are not just some money making council outfit? They are good?

I would also recommend Jim Barden. I’ve had a few lessons with him and he is very good with coaching all facets of the game. The guys at Vic Park are right into holistic golf fitness so it will probably suit you down to the ground. Next time you’re there ask to have a look at their Golf Learning Centre, top notch!

Topic: Golf Talk / Mother Nature at its best

I played one more hole after that and then bailed. It started pouring (sidewards rain Forest Gump style) on the drive back to the clubhouse. It was a scary looking storm!

Topic: Golf Talk / Mother Nature at its best

I was playing at Northlakes on Sunday when the storm came through Brissy. Had the camera in my bag so snapped a few shots of the front as it was passing over the city. (The photos don’t really do it justice due to me forgetting to change the settings back but they still look pretty scary.)

I Got absolutely saturated about 10 minutes later!

Topic: iseekgolf Golf Days / Gailes - Dingo Hill - 14 Nov

Apparently “GolfLink Mates” as it is know is a 30 day trial! I think they are struggling to get people to use those features so will leave the “free trial” running until they get the numbers up. I’ve been using it for well over 30 days now.

Hey if you have a spot in your group this weekend I’ll be keen to for a hit, I need to nominate another round this weekend for November. Had my name down a Keperra but after the storms they have had to close the course for a week. Too many tree down on the fairways apparently! If not I’ll play Gailes again.

No worries mate. When you log in to GolfLink it will list all of the comps that you have played in. Under the “Competition” heading click on one of the RED links to view the competition ranking.

If you are logged in it will display the rankings, if not it will ask for login details. You might have to register first.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Spin

Until you can repeatedly compress the ball against the club face, and I mean really COMPRESS it, backspin will be a bit of an enigma. As others have said, it is largely dependent on factors like the quality of clubs, the type of ball and condition of the green you are hitting to. Learn to compress the ball with your wedges and you’ll start seeing the ball stop on a dime, maybe even going backwards.

Topic: Golf Talk / How did you all play this weekend?

Took my time with everything today! Shot 76 of the stick at Northlakes, windy conditions on the way out and pouring rain most of the the way in so all up I’m very happy.
Highlight – Only 25 putts.
This TGM stuff is slowly coming together for me.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Cleveland ZIP Grooves

I use the SMT CNC Milled Groove Wedges and Cleveland Zip grooved wedges for shear testing of our balls.

Yes most of the special Tour grooves are the similar in effect
but with the new rules to come into play next year will become a
little kinder to balls.

Boz.

Be Bright! UVX3 with Visible HD Performance.

What will the new rules entail Boz? A change to the balls or to the standard for club grooves/face milling?

Good to hear your irons might be coming together mate!

I finished 5th overall according to GolfLink. Three blokes had a net 70, one of which shot 70 off the stick!!! I lost .4 of my handicap so I’m pretty happy with that, a few shots closer to single figures!

Playing Northlakes this arvo, not looking forward to the heat if yesterday is anything to go by.

Another vote here for the rac TP’s. These things stop on a dime and occasionally rip back a few metres on the right greens. Very happy with them!

I agree with frankyb, all of the top wedges give very similar spin if hit right.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / feeling lag

I reckon pressure point #3 is the secret to consistent golf. I thought I had always struck the ball reasonably well until a few weeks ago when I was watching some Lynn Blake videos and I picked up on the Pressure Points.

Discovering PP#3 has instantly changed my golf, hitting it further with a more controlled swing and impact is much more consistent, I can actually hear the ball compressing against the club face.

PP## = Pure Gold!

Thanks fellas, it was good to put a face to a name. I had a good day and would jump at the chance to have a hit with you boys again sometime.

Just had a look through GolfLink, it looks as though there were a few low markers that would have made good company for their playing partners. 102 of 4…ouch!!
Till next time guys.

My first nominated round from yesterday went rather well with the exception of a few lapses in concentration (read:brain explosions). My time spent working on the full swing seems to be paying off, anything outside 80m was great. The driver played nice, I hit 67% of fairways but only hit 28% GIR, I also had 31 putts so have some things I need to work on in the shortgame department.

Overall it was a great day having a hit with DrGribuls and Shortstuff, it was a fairly tough layout with a lot of tight pin placements o some slowish greens.

All up I had 38 points, 0 wipes and knocked 0.4 shots from the handicap.

Topic: Golf Equipment / are there any REALLY low markers who don't play blades?

I’d agree that the terms have become completely arbitrary. Blades probably aren’t as bad as most think, I went from cavities to blades about 6 months ago and am striking the ball much better now due to the instant feedback I was getting when I got one a little of centre, your fingers certainly feel the difference! I reckon the blades cause you to concentrate more on making solid contact, it took me about 6 weeks to start hitting the centre every time. I reckon it’s improved my game heaps.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Breaking tees

Those plastic wedge tees fly out of the ground and go many yards from the tee box when I use them. I lose them after a few holes – and I use them when I find them (other people’s) as they must have the same problem.

I practice on the grass tees at the range and spend so much time looking for those flamin wedge tees, often they fly a good 6-7 metres forward of where I’m standing.

Topic: Golf Talk / the hole that always kills your round...

Tim, I would agree why do a lot of us take a driver off the tee when an iron is suffice. Yet the testosterone always seems to come into play specially when your playing with your mates.

There is a 240m par 4 at my home course which is quite short and can be driven without too many problems, although it does have water all along the left side of the fairway and lots of paperbarks on the right where you can easily find trouble with the narrow fairway. The green is also pretty well protected. To the dismay of my playing partners I now regularly hit an 8 iron off the tee so I can hit a GW into the green from 100 metres out, a club I am lethal with from that distance. It took me about 10 years of playing this course to discover the smart way to play 8(

Topic: Golf Talk / the hole that always kills your round...

I agree Dave, I believe that it’s not “the hole that always kills your round” but more “the hole which YOU always kill your round”.

There are many ways to play a particular hole, some better than others. I’m slowly learning to start to think about the BEST way to play each hole, laying up to get up and down instead of going for the green, taking an iron off the tee when it’s tight etc… I recently played 9 holes with two balls, with one I played how I would normally play, with the other I was a bit more conservative and left the ego in the bag. I was surprised at how much better I scored with the conservative ball, 6 shots better over 9 holes!!!

Topic: The Lounge / Hiring a Car/SUV in the US

Be sure to purchase some travel insurance! A mate hired a car in the states last year and end up with a cracked front windscreen after the truck in front of them threw up a few rocks. Returned the to the dealer to find they wanted to charge him US$1600 to replace the windscreen. He told the what happened with the truck and they basically said too bad and charged it to his credit card.

He claimed it all back on insurance.
