That’s life! Try putting up with rain delays as a player and you will see a different side to tournament golf.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Low Fade

Many players (RH for example) will try to keep the ball low by using their right hand too much which can result in smothering the shot. The secret is placing the ball back in your stance and keeping your hands together through impact with your left hand “leading” Think low by all means but if you are coming out of the rough and need to cut it, it does become very hard to do so. My advice is, don’t go for the hero shot if your are in doubt, take your medicine and play the percentage shot even if that means chipping out onto the fairway. If you have a bare lie and need to keep it low and cut it around a tree, you are in luck. It just takes practice, some experimenting and nothing else.

Topic: Golf Talk / What is a 'good' handicap?

I reckon, who gives a shit who you play with even if they are the worst golfer on the day, a person off 27 etc. I am happy to play with 3 guys off a 27 handicap on a Saturday in the local comp and do all the time. I am a low maker, +1 and do not give a shit ok? It is the company of your players and the bets you have on the course at times.

Nothing wrong with Nike Golf Equipment. Have not tried the new 5900 as I love my SQ Tour Driver (yes the old one). It is like anything when it comes to brands. People will always say something is crap or good or whatever. Each to their own.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Always pratice with a purpose...

The range is great for in-graining positive habits and technique as long as you go by quality and not quantity. Taking it to the course is the downfall of many golfers, well most actually. I suggest you go out to your local course one afternoon when it is not busy and play 2 balls. Play one with aggression or attacking golf and the other one conservatively. After 9 holes, you will see and learn so much about which shot or option is best for you. It is great to be aggresive but it is also just a great to play conservatively.

Well, if you are coming to QLD, I am guessing the Gold Coast is the tourism/golfing destination you may be taking in? There are many well knowledgable teaching professionals on the Gold Coast. I would suggest either Royal Pines Golf Resort, The Glades, Palm Meadows or Hope Island as you will be able to combine your lessons with having a round or 2 plus accomodation either on-site or close by.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Any cures for this Vicious Pull Hook?

Jeffmann,

I am out of the golf industry thesedays, playing and teaching from all over the world and own a few pub’s now. My bio-mechanic’s were to set myself up for life and have a family and golf helped with that. Are you another person who has a desire to warp golfers about their swings to make cash from it? You are a golf theorist? Where can I study that?

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / 4 year old's golfing habits

When I used to do golf for a living, I always used to cringe when I had some parents bring their kid along for a golf lesson. It is only my opinion but I reckon a kid should start getting his first lesson around the age of 12 or so. Kids are kids so let them have their childhood. One thing I am an advocate of is teaching them about safety on a golf course and respect for fellow golfers.
Show a kid how to grip a club, tell them to swing easy and let them go and discover the game. The wife drives the kid to the golf course on a Saturday morning for Junior comp as I am in bed after working to all hours and he steals my Pro-V’s out of my golf bag. It brings back memories when I used to steal my Dad’s golf balls for a comp when I was a yound rascal. Gota laugh.
My son is 9 and wears me out with his habit for golf but it is cool as I was the same when I was young. I reckon it will be in the not too distant future that he will get me off the stick. His best round is 76 (+4). His handicap is 11. When we have a round together, he tells me why I hit a snap hook or that I should of layed up. Youthful advice! If my son ever takes on a career as a professional golfer in 10 years or so, I will be behind the ropes and let him live the life of a golf pro but until then, it is up to him to make the most of what he has and PRACTICE.

I remember going back to my local school after hours and on weekends to hit some balls on the long playing fields. Never got in trouble but if I did it thesedays, I am sure I would be locked up. The world has changed.

Why play Northlakes? For the price and the type of course it is, there are so many better courses in Brisbane or north going up to the Sunshine Coast?

Topic: Golf Equipment / Shaft Puring

I suggest to the average joe here that they do not try and get into this sort of thing. I have had shafts “purified for me” a few times and as opposed to just throwing in a DG or a Project… it made zap difference to my game. A good shaft in your driver does help though….

Topic: Golf Equipment / What handicap will you finish 2007 on

My exact h’cap is +1 fellas. Had -5 on Saturday in comp but then had +4 today in comp today. I actually do not care if my handicap goes out or down for 2008 as that is golf. How can one have a differrence of 9 shots in a round of golf you may be all thinking. One misses 3 or 4 easy putts for birdie, throw in some 3 putts, a few beers and there is the answer. My putter is either a devil or a saint.
2008?
I just hope my putter comes to the party more times than not but then again, who cares! A few beers with your mates on a golf course is cool.

You have 3 choices “socks”.... interlocking, overlap or the 10er’. If one is getting blisters on their hands from golf, something is not right and I would suggest a derma doc may be on the cards.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / The Journey to Scatch

Shit, I did not finish my post so here goes….When I was in my young ages, I just wanted to play but my parents told me to get something behind you to fall back on. I did my 3 years which was painful but I learnt so many things in those 3 years as a kid (18-21) and my golf did not suffer as many people think it does doing a traineeship. If you want it, you find time and away you go. Many guys fall away in their time as times are tough doing it and that is life. If your dream is to play golf for a living, do a trainneship my friends as I can guarantee you that there will be tough times in the future and heartbreak, frustration, great times, a $600 paycheck or a large check if you finish up in the field in terms of these days. There will be times when you are ….what am I doing? You may be able to shoot under par around your home track but try and do that living out of a suitcase playing around the world every week? Shoot par or a few under for a 4 round tournament and you will be at the end of the field with a cheque that possibly pays the bills unless you are playing an event with 6 foot rough and fairways that are 15 yards wide. One may get a cheque for $30.000 but that is used to pay back the debt you have from your friendly bank manager which keeps them happy and then you start all over again.
It is great to dream and work hard but you have to cut the mustard…..

Topic: Golf Talk / Iron Tips

Guys?

Find your correct ball position for each iron. You do not have to swing “hard” at the ball to produce spin or a desired ball flight? Correct ball position and solid contact with a good tempo will win anyday.

Topic: Golf Talk / How do you track your game?

The best stat is not your last hole or the next hole. It is the hole you are on. Never think behind and never think ahead, think of the current moment. This may seem difficult for most golfers but you have to take it one shot at a time.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Need some iron head suggestions.

Why do you not keep the shafts aside tim and give them to a kid who has some skill or shows promise over time? I am sure the kid would be stoked to get some nice shafts in his irons when they are suited to him? There is no better feeling than giving something to a kid who has dreams and cannot afford it.
Just a thought mate….

Topic: Golf Talk / Tour card hopefuls tee off in Victoria

The Aussie Q school may not be the size of the USA Q school but you have to get it into perspective. Australia has produced some rather fine golfers and always will. To get a start in professional golf tournaments in Australia is minimal. The money is not there to start with so many of the boys do it tough for a while to make cash to go overseas like to the Asian Tour, European Challenge Tour, Japan and believe it or not, you can play in China and Korea as they have golf tours. Get a passport my friend and get out more.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / The Journey to Scatch

Getting to scratch? I play off scratch guys to this day. I used to be a professional (touring) but gave it up for a different life, marriage etc and could not be more happier. My advice to any aspiring person here is that if you desire to get to scratch, make a living out of it in the pay for play ranks all the best to you but it takes patience and quality of practice not quantity. You need to be a great putter and playing even par golf will not make you much cash. Aspire to get to plus 2 or something and there are still guys out there who turn pro off a handicap such as this and cannot make it. It is a tough road. As for the amount of golf ones plays? It is possible to play off scratch if you play once a week. It is like riding a bike, you never forget. My putter is either on or off on the day or mixed up. One week it might be 3 under, the next week it may be 3 over.
Good luck
