Topic: Golf Equipment / Taylor Made

Have just spent the last 4 days playing golf & fishing with some of the head honchos from Taylor Made Adidas here in Nrth America & got to demo & look at all the new products coming out in the next 2 – 3 months.

Some of it is very cool equipment indeed. Wait and check it out if you are a Taylor fan.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Ping Colour coding

I think a pro will charge @ $5 each to change lie. Ping will charge more and recolor the dot!!

A pro may have a lie and loft machine but will not be able to change lie angles on PING’s correctly.

Best to send them back to PING. Because PING’s are cast they need to be hit with a mallet or “Shocked” into their new lie angle that way they will not have a memory of the previous lie angle and gradually creep back there…. So in the long run it may cost a few $$$ more to send back to PING but you will only need to do it once and you will ba assured it is done properly.

Correct info on the process, seen it done in both Oz and the U.S Ping factory

Check out the Pingeurope website they have a colour code chart you can actually look at and see what the lie angles are. That or do the webfit and they will tell you what code suits you.

I think a pro will charge @ $5 each to change lie. Ping will charge more and recolor the dot!!

In the past PING have changed lie angles for free if you were the original owner of the set (they only charge you for the freight).

I believe if you have purchased a set 2nd hand then they do it for around 25 – 30 plus freight – so not overly expensive.

Bear in mind that Ping stand behind the products warranty-wise a lot longer than other companies – so if you do get the lies changed by your local pro then your back up service is gone.

Otteneumann (where does that come from)

Others here would know better than me but I have read on ISG that AAA can often be missleading…as its not a difficult rating to get, but that doesnt mean they are all crap! Ask about and get some opinions on the pro….if he’s good and gets the results we’ probably all pay over the odds…its not like its an ongoing payment….Hopefully!

The difference between golf and the government is that in
golf you can’t improve your lie!

AAA is good – Means the pro is up to date with courses etc

A is the base grade.

I Charge $75 for 45 mins – but often will give the student the extra 15 mins free to make it an hour if they are having any issues or questions etc

Haven worked closely with John Craig for over 10 years I can understand his position on this in regards to his reply.

However for future reference if the product is bought locally through correct channels he will be the 1st guy to back up any issues concerning warranties etc. 100%

I have already read their books. During one of the teaching seminars I did over here I met a fellow instructor who had attended their coaching courses etc &was really interesting to see what they had to say.

I am currently looking at doing their coaching clinics and incorporating their philosophies into my own playing and coaching career.

yes agree – I think the struggling Pros should carry with them and read Pia Nilsson’s book Every Shot Must Have Purpose – great read! What State are you in?

Political Correctness is doctrine fostered by a delusional minority and by the media, which holds forth the proposition it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Too funny – I posted a forum on Pia Nilssons Vision 54 program on another thread on this website.

I am originally from melb but moved to Canada 2 1/2 years ago.
Will be back home for 6 weeks in Jan / Feb next year. Cant wait

Curious to know if any of you have looked at the Vision 54 approach to golf instruction.

It was stared by Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott .
Pia is Annika Sorenstams coach.

Want to know your thoughts after you read the website. Interesting.

Great post – thanks for the heads up on the life of a pro and thoughts – I will think a little differently next time I play with a Pro in a pro am and the Pro is struggling.

Sometimes though when a Pro isn’t playing real great and you sincerely give encouragement and all that spews out of their mouth is negative – you tend to know why they fail!

HC
Missed your post earlier…well done Bloke!!

Political Correctness is doctrine fostered by a delusional minority and by the media, which holds forth the proposition it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

You are correct, Attitude plays a big part in success or failure of a golfer (At all levels). It’s the guys that cope with their dissappointments and bad days that learn the most from them and in turn use that to better their games and themselves.
Golfers of every level have their bad days as well as their good ones.
Whether that is a Tour Pro, Mini tour player, club / teaching pro, pennant player, b grade etc. Just because each category is at a different ball striking / performance level than the next – that doesnt make them immune from less than perfect golf and isnt that why we play we play this game – because of the ongoing challenges?

Topic: Golf Talk / Playing in Pro-Ams

Fairways_greens,

As you are a golf pro and it seems that you have done the hard yards as most do with working in pro-shops, lessons etc.. All credit to you…my question is and I am not being a smart ass is? Why do pro’s bother to play in pro-ams when deep down inside they know they are going to hit is sideways and have that doubt? I am not a pro but I can play once a week, 3 times a week, not at all for a week or 2 but can still have 2/3/4 over par on a tough course? Those scores will make zero cash on a tour as you know and to me, I do not care. It is just funny to play in a pro-am and the golf pro in the group hits donuts and shanks?
I have been unlucky to have certain golf pro’s in my last few pro-ams that hit the ball sideways.
You have shot 84 in a pro-am and then next day 64? That is a 20 shot difference? What happened there? Golf is not an easy game but you are at a level that is wake up? CRAZY……..........

Sometimes it’s all about just getting out of the shop and away from business for the day, rather than the competive ‘winning’ aspect of it. (Thats not saying the person has the wrong attitude – It may just be his one chance at having a game that month)
Much the same way way as most club members team up with their friends on a sunday afternoon or go away for a weekend to get away from work and have a break. Catching up with your fellow golf pro’s and finding out whats happening in their little part of the world, basically just chewing the fat so to speak can be just as productive and relaxing.

Going back, The 84 – I just plain old didnt play very well that day. No excuses. had one of those days when nothing seemed to go right. I felt prepared and ready to go. It just didnt happen that day. The following day, as always I put the previous days play out of mind and just hit the shots as I saw them and a few putts dropped. In retrospect a very boring / easy round of golf. – Non stressful. Go Figure. – but sometimes that is golf.

Topic: Golf Talk / Playing in Pro-Ams

Some very interesting comments indeed.

As I tend to play in about 12 – 18 Pro Ams a year (aside from tournaments themselves), there are many factors indeed that can affect a golf pro’s play.

Yes a lot of the pro’s you play with in pro ams spend their days working in shops, giving lessons, organising member events, Trying to run their business (i.e themselves), balancing books etc, etc – Then they have to find time to work on their games, both Practice and game-play time and then trying to be competitive in a pro am / tournament situation. This cant always be accomodated into a 40 – 50 hour week. So their may be times when your Pro may not have even hit a shot in 2-3 weeks, let alone play at the standard that you expect of him.

Take a stockbroker as an example, there are days when family, financial, personal matters etc affect your decisons to purchase or sell the right stock / shares at the right price. good, bad or otherwise. That doesnt mean that you are bad at your job, or you should look at other careers.

Thats what happens to golfers some days you had had an argument with the missus, or the dog got hit by a car etc, etc all things that affect decision making and how you are feeling that day, Then there are days when our heads are clear and our bodies are right, our game feels sharp, we have had time to practise and bingo – you have a Great pro that day.
I
t’s how the individual Pro deals with the bounces both good and bad that determine if he is good or not, not what he shoots on 1 particluar day. On a personal level I’ve shot 84 in a Pro Am and 64 the following day in the 1st round of the event. The pro am round didnt make me a bad golfer, and the 64 didnt make me a good golfer, but I learn a great deal from both days.

Holy Crap.

When I was working in Aus, I only knew one guy who played right and putted left.

The club i’m working at here in canada I have approx 12 guys who do it. right putting left and left putting right.

It’s nuts. I guess a hockey background at some stage may have messed them up a bit

Topic: Golf Talk / Senior Flex?

Tim,
ok tim , although, it’s an interesting topic, I checked out jeff’s stuff there is some interesting information in their, One thing I’m learning is guys like jeff you can learn bits and pieces of them and guys like tom wishom, they have some good information to learn from, The science part is fun, tim i’m interested in learning more on your thought about drivers, and flexes

Jeff has been up to his ears in it for years so it’s good to analyse the collated data & see where it’s heading. Very handy stuff but the Addendum is missing loads of shafts. It’s impossible to think they could test them all. Pity.

Personally I prefer softer flexes & slightly higher lofts to make it easier to play the entire round rather than in peaks & troughs based on personal fitness, warm up routines for individual golfers etc. I use a 12.5 with a 234 cpm shaft at the moment. I do deloft it a little at impact.

I’m currently doing a bit of work with higher lofts & firmer tip sections looking to maintain higher initial launch but achieve flatter flight patterns & tighter dispersion. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Some of the things I’ve seen at The Range seem to defy convention. eg If you get a hitter with a SS over 110 mph whose bad ball is a hook to hit L flex, 220-230 cpm butt flex shafts, you’d expect a worse hook right? We’ve found that often just the opposite is the case as the lag in the shaft leaves the face so open they will hit big high soft draws or blocks. Curious.

Inversely you can fit really slow swingers who have a short action into very firm shafts as they don’t give the softer shaft time to release…more of a poking action than a swing. great for some of the older guys.

How about you?

Home on The Range

Yes,

Can certainly happen. There is exceptions to every rule when fitting clubs.
We had a guy fitted out by Taylor Made and myself here in canada & no matter what we gave the guy he hit it higher and higher – to the point where we had him hitting a Tour Burner TP head, 8.5 Deg Loft, XXX Diamana that TM had made as a proto for John Daly & he launched that baby at 17 to 17.5 Deg & 3500 to 4000 rpm consistently. He had a Technique that allowed him to hit the ball accurately and consistantly (Played off 5), but his downside was that with the driver he ‘cups’ his hand at impact and flips the ball into the air. TM couldnt offer him anything more other than to go revamp his golf swing. Like I said exceptions to every rule

it’s good to have fun…n make fun

but i think tom wishon did comment that a lot of players are using stiffer shafts than is needed,
n if one is between flexes better to err on the side of less stiff flex….

If Tiger plays Lefty will he be that good ?
Square is Good ? Sure is, if it’s the right stick !

Topic: Golf Talk / Senior Flex?

It is also an indication that you need a senior flex when you are on the range at your club and you are hitting the ball well at the 150m marker….with a driver….and you turn around and watch another person hitting their 8 iron the same distance. Saying this, I know an old bloke who is 74, plays off 3, hits it about 230m with the driver and uses stiff flex. I hope that in 50 years or so I can do that.

The Question there though is – should he really be using stiff flex at his age? Even with those stats? Just because he is using stifff doesnt mean that the best for him.

Case in point the 22 handicapper I did a fitting for the other day who couldnt hit it more than 190 yards downhill, but demanded that I order his clubs with stiff flex…..even though he lost accuracy, height and distance and was against my recommendations when hitting the stiff versus the senior flex that I did fit him for.
Go figure. (What was that I heard someone say about the customer ALWAYS being right?) hahaha

Topic: Golf Talk / Greg Norman got me started playing golf...how about you?

For me (being a pom) it was Faldo. I took up golf around late 80’s / early 90’s when he was really at his best. Glorious days for European golf so it was hard to ignore the game. Woosnam, Olazabal, Langer were all world beaters and Seve would still pop up every now and then. And on the back of that the Ryder Cup became something that we could win.

As Norman was a great rival I have to admit I didn’t like him. But I was a young man then and I have grown to appreciate him a little more now.

My brother still calls Faldo, “God”

I played golf with Faldo back in 1999 and while no longer at the top of his game – it was great to watch his course management, demeanour and professionalism on the course.

Mind you I also rate this as one of the funniest days I have ever had on the golf course – Faldo shared with us some of the funniest stories & dirtiest jokes I have ever heard.

I rate him very highly

Greg, is the reason I started to play golf in the Mid 80’s, He was the reason I used Tour Edition golf balls, He was the reason I stayed up late at night or got up at 4 am to watch golf on tv (And be late to school)

He is the reason I practised so hard, and played so much.
He is the reason I developed a passion for this game that I play and love today.

He is the reason I am a golf professional today.

Very Honorable indeed fg.

you are stationed in canada now is it not right ?

Correct, But looks like I’ll be back home in Melbourne over Jan – Feb. I will need to get outta the snow & swing a club by then.

Hey,

At the end of the day – Greg did what Greg has always done and that is get GOLF on the front pages of the paper and television in a period of time when nobody else is.

Regardless of the outcome of Sunday (And Yes I was hoping he could have pulled it off) – It was still a great effort and shows that the talent is still there regardless of his age, preparation or lack thereof.

I think Johnny is lying, he is, or was, a politician after all.

After seeing him bowl a cricket ball I honestly thought that when a prime minister wins office, the first thing that should happen is they take him down to the nets at the Royal Mint (closest to p. house) and make sure he can bowl one on the pitch at a half decent speed.

If it misses the pitch (or doesn’t even make it to the end of the pitch as in Johnny’s case) then it’s a re election.

An absolute stain on Australia’s political history if you ask me. Bob Hawke would just be mortified.

haha, and so say all of us…....... There should be a referendum on this, or at least a royal commission.
