not sure Libba but he was a little nervous. if bunkers fall under the same rules as say a water hazard then improving stance more so than just standing and bracing would be a penalty, moving sand would be like moving a Lilly on the edge of a hazard you either player or take un payable ?

wonder if anyone has been called for it, maybe like D Johnston got snatched by the tv cameras.

Reading from that decision, could it depend on whether or not the ball is in a flat part of the bunker? ie ‘building a stance’ would involve altering the way the shot would be played as opposed to if you were to just walk up and play it.
But from your description p+b, could it also be argued the player was testing the surface?

what constitutes building a stance, saw it yesterday where a player had a good 3 inches of sand all around his stance probably spent a good minute wriggling moving scraping with spikes, it was a playoff hole which he lost and I’m sure no-one would call it, but it was what it was.
thoughts ?

So long as you’re just wriggling your feet , not delaying play and not knocking down the side of the bunker, I reckon you’ll be quite ok.
I’ve never seen an instance where someone was penalised for actually “building a stance” but I’ve seen a couple of pros actually do it with apparent disregard for the rules.

This cut & paste spells it out a bit more.
13-3/3 Knocking Down Side of Bunker to Get Level Stance
Q. A player knocks down the side of a bunker with his foot in an effort to get his feet on the same level. Is this permissible?

A. No. Such action constitutes building a stance in breach of Rule 13-3.
