Topic: Golf Equipment / What determines the performance of a ball?

Thanks Boz much appreciated, especially when working so late at night!

That is exactly the sort of info I was after, my curiosity is well and truely satisfied!

Topic: Golf Equipment / What determines the performance of a ball?

Ok with the release of the 3 new Bridgestone balls (treo, b330-rx and e7+) it got me wondering about golf ball construction . . .

I can understand how feel & distance may be varied by the composition of the 2, 3 (or 4) layers of the ball and cover combinations, however I am curious about

1. What determines how much a ball spins off a driver, where low spin is preferred vs short irons/wedges with high spin preferred.

2. What influences how much a ball is influenced by wind, other than outer cover material?

3. Is it the dimples design that determines a balls flight height?

And no, I am not into ball construction & design in the way some are into Architecture . . . . just curious is all.

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Why do the pros do this?

I dont much time these days to practise/play, so in the lead up to a game I will do a lot of swing visualisation, concentrating on how it feels and rythmn.
I know it helps a lot as my games since starting this are a lot better than before visualising.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Anyone use a Proforce V2?

I had a driver made up to match the specs of my Vsteel 3W.
Clubmaker put in a reg V2 tipped 1”. Man I love it! Teamed up with a Bang head, I gained about 20-30m over prev driver.

Does anyone know roughly how much it would cost to get one of these fitted?

Where do you live Forewood?

e6 doesnt spin any where near a Pro V, maybe the e5 or e5+.

I use the e6, however am venturing into the land of spin via the e5 2007 model which can be had cheap at Squizzy’s.

Topic: Golf Talk / Markers should be poles not discs

Apparantly Nick Faldo could estimate a distance to within 6feet by eye, that being said I am a big fan of distance markers.
My faves are a distinctive native shrub for 200, 150 & 100.
My club uses the small coloured domes in the centre of the fairway and I find it changes the feel of the hole significantly, although it does give you a centre of the fairway aiming point!

Topic: Golf Equipment / TaylorMade V Steel (Driver) ?

Go to a club maker and have him match it!

I now have a Bangster fitted to a UST V2, matched to my 3w V-steel!
A nice smooth swing and she goes at least 50m past my (various) previous drivers!

Topic: Golf Equipment / Advantage Custom Clubmakers

You could also try Gary Langridge (ex Advantage Custom Clubmakers clubfitter) on 0433 198 070. Working from home in (i think) Bilgola.

I know quite a few blokes who will also highly recommend him and he is VERY reasonable $ wise too.

agree with all above, cheap set, lessons…once you become obsessed move on to dearer clubs…by that time if you keep coming to the forum you will learn more about what you are looking for when you want to spend more.

Whole heartedly agree with frankyb (and the others).

Topic: Golf Talk / Annual Membership Subs

I have a handicap through Riverside Oaks, app $115 p.a and requirement to play there a minimum of 3 time per year at cost app $70 per.

With two young boys limiting the amount I can play I can’t justify the $3K for Oatland, or app $2k for Muirfield, even tho I live within 10 mins of each.

Perhaps in a few years. . . . .

Topic: Ask Golf Guru - Golf Instruction / Wet Course and thick rough

OK, so after lots of rain here in Sydney I played in a social club I kick around a bit with.
The course was pretty damp and the rough longer than I have encountered before.

So after spending some time in the long Kikiyu, I decided I have no idea how hard to hit a ball nestled down in about 3-4 inches of Kike. On one of the early holes I only needed to go about 50m and it took me 3 shots!
Of course if I had tried just to get up on the fairway rather than go at the green . . . .
Anyway how do I judge how hard to hit a ball from that length of rough?

Thanks, stu.
PS I know this is probably a how long is a bit of string type question.

Thanks Chris, was thinking of something like that.

Any impact from putting a bit of metho down first to get rid of moisture?
