Topic: Golf Talk / What stops people playing golf? All Newcastle area (NSW) clubs, except Newcastle GC, allow sports socks (short) to be worn with shorts. I feel that if you want to play golf be prepared for the long day at the club, after all, it is not a bad way to spend a Saturday, am or pm., on the course with some mates, having a good time. Players who have commitments with families etc have to make a decision, do you want to play golf or not? Most clubs have 9 hole comps. chook runs etc through the week, weekends are traditional for 18 hole comps. It is apparent that a lot of younger members here bag club committees for being made up of older members with their draconian rules and ideas, might I suggest to these people to get off their butt and become a Director of their club Board to become involved and to see why decisions are made. Golf is probably the only sport where traditions and values (rules) are part and parcel of the game, accept it, or haven’t they got enough time and would just prefer to be critical?. We all know, that golf is an expensive game to play, and a lot of clubs are having hard times, but I would suggest that all club directors do their best to see their club prosper and sometimes decisions have to be made that members disagree with. Don’t forget that all directors do their bit for nothing and some spend countless hours, trying to do their best for the club, quite a few with limited resources. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Fake Odyssey 2-ball putters on Ebay Dan, I have a Lind 2 ball and find it OK. It is a solid head, unlike Odyssey that has a gap thru the head. The head of Lind, is of a similar shape, but, to me feels very heavy. I think the price has been reduced to less than $50, so you will not lose too much giving one a try. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Which orthotic is best for golf shoes? Digga, If you do have a spur, and it sounds like it, have a look on the internet. All the remedies other people have posted, rolling pins, bottles and golf balls have all worked, for some people, I think they break the point of the spur down with the consistent rolling. Others have had operations to file the point away, to get rid of the pain. Cheers, |

Topic: Golf Talk / Which orthotic is best for golf shoes? Digga, If you have pain in your heels when you get out of bed it could be caused by heel spurs. I had one in each heel years ago and the pain was nearly unbearable, could not put heel on the floor first thing. I was put onto a silica tablet that you buy at a health food shop. They were Natures Own brand, 200 tabs in a small oval container and cost about $6 (5 years ago). I took 6 a day for about 3 months and the pain went and has not been back. I have told numerous friends about silica, some have had relief in a couple of weeks, most a bit longer. I was told about and tried orthodics to no avail.Spurs are are mostly caused by wearing flat soled shoes (no arch) or thongs a lot, your arch flattens out and stretches tendons and ligaments in the heel which then causes the spurs and pain. Some people have cortizone injections to relieve the pain but it will eventually return when it wears off. Give it a go. Cheers |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Distance Measuring Devices I walked past a guy last week with a Sureshot hanging from his umbrella. The distance to the green was on the screen, the unit looked real good. I did not have any time to talk, so about how much are they and where is the best place to buy them?.The Sureshot site seems to direct to a buggy distributor Cheers |

Topic: Golf Equipment / How fit are you? After not being able to stand straight after a game of golf and putting up with what I thought was a lower back problem for years, I visited an osteopath to see what was wrong. He told me that my hips were out of line and I had severe ligament damage as a result. I had three visits and now after 8 weeks to repair the damage I have virtually no pain anywhere, so much so that I played 4 days in a row last week with no problems. I have never done that before. I had never heard abouts the hips before but he told me it is common, so maybe some of you guys could have the same problem without knowing. |

Topic: Golf Talk / New golf clubs!! If you settle on a package just make sure they have a True Temper or another brand good quality shaft and a Stainless Steel head. Don’t get caught with an alloy head because it will eventually snap, alloy is normally thicker around the hosel (where shaft goes in head) True temper make shafts to cover the whole range, (cheap to dear clubs), and the head shape has to appeal to you whether large or small. Most golf shops have any number of package clubs. |

Topic: Golf Talk / New golf clubs!! I found in the past that dearer clubs were basically made for better players, eg. they normally come with high flex shafts to make the ball flight lower, so the shafts are top end, With major brands you also pay for the name, hence the reason all the big time pro’s are paid to use certain brands. The cheaper brands (in packages) are basically pointed towards the social, learner type golfer so they can start playing golf without much outlay. The cheaper clubs come with low flex shafts, ball flight higher, and are normally OK. I would suggest that you buy a package (everything) for $500, see if you like the game , then go from there. At this stage , to me , no benefit at all to outlay heaps then find that golf is not for you. You can later maybe sell or trade the clubs for a better set and not lose a lot. ($500 max.) Most golf shops will make clubs to suit, even package clubs, now,. just to get a sale |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Lind Golf Walrus,, If you read the Lind website it says about their drivers, that if Tiger Woods hit one, it would go as far as his Nike, it could be right, or wrong. I have had a used Nike driver, last model, for the past 5 weeks, it has an A flex shaft and I hit it longer than a Titleist 905R with a stiff shaft, I always thought that I needed a stiff shaft but I was wrong. What I am getting at is, the driver you buy now will not be your last, and you do not have to pay over the top to get a good one. For me something, for $200 or thereabouts , whether from overseas or local is perfect., The Lind irons I bought with 17-4 stainless heads are just as good as the Ping I3+, I have now in the garage, the big difference being, one Ping iron is about 80% of the full set of Lind. I bought the Lind as an experiment because they also have a more flexible shaft, but there is no noticeable difference in performance. Cheers |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Lind Golf Walrus,, Nearly all golf equipment is made in Asia, mostly China, because of cheap labor, however I read last week that inflation and living costs are rising so the cheap prices will begin to rise as well.I could be wrong but Ping seems to be one the few still made in USA. Firms such as Lind and C/Clark would source all of their clubs from China, hence the cheaper prices. |

Topic: Golf Talk / The Nazi Members Our club has Ladies day Tuesday and Thursday, Mens on Wednesday and Saturday, with a mixed (medley) on Sundays. Only two women are 7 day members, but that is because they play away at other clubs that have mixed events on a Saturday, and they have to be 7 day members at their home club, to play. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Anyone used the Calloway preowned website? Friend bought a set of X18 irons, 3 to PW, for less than $700 delivered, from this site. May have been superseded, but were new and a lot cheaper than local. He was happy with the purchase and that is all that matters. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Thinking of joining our comittee or board Was told last night that club membership in NSW has dropped from 102313 in 1999 to 81884 in 2007, roughly 20%. Women membership dropped 15% in same period. I would think that because of the economic situation prevailing now, that there will be a lot more, and most will go and play socially when they can afford it, and at different courses as referenced by previous posts. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Whats the ruling - IN a house Our club, some years ago was made to shorten a par 3 (180 to 155 ) and change the position of the green, about 15 metres ,further away from a road, because the Insurance company indicated that they would refuse to pay claims for car damage unless we did. An occasional ball still goes over, but the player is covered by the club policy. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Sunday Violence How about this one, Last Wednesday night the greens shed at Waratah GC ( Newcastle NSW) was broken into and set alight. Destroyed the shed and everything, yes everything in it, over a million dollars worth of damage,. I went to play there on Thursday and the course was closed because of an exclusion zone, 800 metres from the shed, in case the gas bottles exploded. They have been offered demo machines from Toro, but have no where to store them until they hire shipping containers. Major problems there. This club has been having serious problems with vandals lately, theft, breakins etc, but this takes the cake. Probably another slap on the wrist after the apology, (after they are caught.) |

Topic: Rules of Golf / Buffer Zones Thanks Brett, I slipped up there. Actually the wording is: Category A, up to 4.4, If a player submits a score with a differential more than 5 strokes higher than his handicap, his exact handicap shall be increased by 0.2, instead of 0.1 |
