Do you have any right handed ones?

Hell, for that price, buy it and learn how to play lefty!

If it says left-handed, it is left-handed. Otherwise, assume everything is right-handed.

Sagely advice right there.

Topic: Golf Equipment / My WITB Pics

I’m amazed they spelt it Hi Brid.

I think it was part of their larger line in Japan. I have seen the Hi-Brid moniker on Srixon balls and gloves, but this was the first time I’d seen it on clubs. Incidentally, if anyone knows anything about the irons, I’d love to hear it – I bought them off e-bay on a whim without really knowing anything about them. They’re fantastic irons, with a nice leading edge grind and fiery titanium faces.

The thing I’m most curious is the numbering with the triangle in the cavities. I sorta assume they’re for length, loft and lie, but I’m not sure.

Seek out an Italian deli that sells the stuff fresh. That’s the best stuff I’ve tried.

Otherwise, go the Latina – it’s not bad at all.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Center shafted or heel shafted putters

Different styles suit different strokes – a heel-shafted putter is usually best for people with a ‘gate’ stroke. I think centre-shafted putters might suit a straight back-and-through stroke, I’m not sure though.

Personally I own and use a heel-shafted anser-type (Cleveland Gutcheck), a heel-shafted mallet (Odyssey WH #5) and centre-shafted high-moi design (Macgregor 6.4k), depending on how I’m feeling/putting that particular day.

Nigel. VJ is a fader. That guy (who I know too) was feeding you a line of BS passed on to him by his son.

Thanks Tim, I don’t get to see a lot of VJ driving the ball on TV, Seems to be of late Tiger and more Tiger + I don’t have cable.Cheers for the heads up.How come the tour is designed to be that open? 2-3deg, is a s#it load, it must look a bit odd looking down off the tee.Whats the theory! in the design, from a engneering point of veiw, and I don’t mean to help people correct a draw, does the CEO overly draw the ball?.

Hi Nigel,

Vijay’s drivers are actually about seven degrees open, to allow him to fully release the club because his swing is a big cut. The Tour HiBore heads will probably sit square to a degree or two open, and the regular heads are probably a little closed. AFAIK, the only difference between the two heads are the face angle and hosel length, with the tour model having a longer hosel to allow for bending.

Cheers,

Col

Topic: Sports Talk / Another pro wrestler dead - Chris Benoit this time...

Saw it on the news last night. He murdered his wife and son before hanging himself. As a father, it just makes me sick to even contemplate what he did… I don’t know what happened between him and his missus (apparently there was a history of disturbances), but the poor kid getting caught up in this is just tragic.

They need to do some serious looking at the wrestling industry – so many wrestlers dying, either from steroid abuse or painkiller abuse, and so many lives just steamrolled over by the industry. This sort of thing should be a wake up call for Vince McMahon.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Maximum, not recommended, is 14 clubs

I’ve been downsizing for a while now… Pretty much just taking everything out of the bag that I don’t hit well, which leaves me with driver (and it stays in the bag most of the time), 3 wood, 7 wood, irons 6-P, 49, 55 and 60* wedges, and a putter, for a total of 12 clubs. And I’m thinking of losing the lobber, as I can pull off most shots I need to with the 55*

But being that I only play socially, I’ve got no qualms about taking out 14 clubs, or more. If the mood strikes me, I might grab the hybrid, an extra driver or a couple other putters. To the other extreme, I sometimes go out with just my hybrid or 7-wood, 6 iron, wedge and putter. Carrying just a few clubs really frees you up (and makes you laugh at your playing partner lugging 14 clubs, 2 dozen balls and a frozen 2 litre bottle of water in his staff bag…)

Topic: Golf Equipment / Taylormade R6 460 - Head Rattle...

Well, after 3 holes on Sunday, it was back. But by the 11th hole it was gone again. Dammit.

Taking it back to the pro shop tomorrow when I order my new irons. Will see about swapping it as I only have 3 weeks left in Australia so no time to wait for it to go to Taylormade for inspection/repair etc.

Love the club and the ball flight it gives, but they don’t have any more in stock and won’t get any more of the 460s… May see about a 905R as they are clearing them at the same price as what I paid for the R7… The rattle pisses me off when swinging.

Mike

Generally, if they do replace it, it’ll be with whatever the equivalent model is in the current line, so probably the Superquad for you. I’ve known people who’ve taken back defective R5’s and gotten R7 425’s as a replacement.

If I were you, I’d take the club to a driving range and hit balls untill the rattle comes back, then stop straight away and go to the pro shop.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Does equipment really matter?

I think for the most part that the only way brand name items can improve your game is mentally. I know my Odyssey isn’t any straighter or more accurate than the $10 Odyssey knockoff it replaced, but when I’m standing over a pressure putt, looking down at the real deal gives me that little bit of reassurance that makes all the difference. As for other clubs, I love my TM R5, but I don’t think I’ve gained any distance over my $50 Srixon Tour Special that it replaced. Same for my irons and wedges too – I still can’t generate much spin, even though I’ve got a set of tour issue TM’s with razor sharp grooves… But the confidence boost I get standing over a shot knowing that I can rely on the gear to really get the job done has seen me shave a few strokes off.

Cheers,

Topic: Golf Equipment / What does a hybrid replace?

I agree too – if your 3-iron is good for 210m consistently, I see no reason to jump on the hybrid bandwagon. Personally I hit longer irons and fairway woods better than hybrids, so they’re out of the bag for now.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Anyone use 13 degree driver??

Yeah, I noticed a huge improvement going to a 11 degree head from my 9.5 degree. Mind you, after a while I found I was hitting it way too high and not getting any roll, so I switched back to the 9.5 and now am hitting on a similar arc to when I first switched to the 11 degree. Swing must have shifted a bit, eh?

Topic: Golf Equipment / Eidolon Wedges?

They look like quality gear, but the two things that strike me about them are:

Their ‘revolutionary’ variable bounce sole is not much more than a leading edge grind, and not suited to every player.

The mill-marks on the face are in the opposite direction to every other milled-face wedge I’ve seen. Not sure if this effects the playability at all, just something I noticed.

Col

Edit – Jeez – I just wanted dot-points…

Topic: Golf Talk / how are the courses after the rain

Here in Central Qld the courses are looking awesome. We had a solid week of good soaking rain, does wonders for the courses. In particular, our ‘if we’re desperate’ course is usually brown all over, with “water hazards” consisting of a dry creek bed that runs through the course, culminating in the second-last hole, a par 5 with the aforementioned creek bed running in front of the green. Well, after all the rain, the creek is filled to overflowing, and the whole course is green and lush. Still only costs us $15 each with buggie hire though. My new favourite course.

Topic: The Lounge / Signs that your coffee shop appreciates your custom

Sorry to burst your bubble, but did you stop to think that maybe they were taking the mickey by buying you a kind of “semi-soft-porn mag?” It may have been a comment on your taste in literature.

So are you saying that Zoo Weekly is a step up or down from ISG?

They used to have the complete works of Proust for browsing as they brewed your coffee, but people kept pinching it. I guess Zoo Weekly or the paper is all I’ll get from now….

I bought Zoo the other day, expecting a Ralph/FHM sorta mag. Turns out it’s just a crappy copy of Picture/People, for men whose wives won’t let them buy the real thing.
