Topic: Golf Equipment / #%&^#& store on eBay

QUOTE: packard @ Mar 22 2007, 03:27 PM

Working on the assumption that the human race is full of greed and stupidity is a good start.

I can take a handful of trade price lists and scroll through Ebay and find a disturbing number of golf items selling at less than wholesale. What conclusions do we draw from that?

There are opportunities in buying overseas, or in recently superceded stock but you'd better be intimately familiar with the market and the equipment. And even if you are you can still get burned.

Bottom line is that the mark up on good golf equipment is tiny in relation to normal retail practice in other sectors. I would be highly suspicious of any golf equipment changing hands on Ebay for anything more than 10% better than the best retail quote available. Add in freight and the loss of opportunity to hold it in your hand before buying, and make your own decision on if its worth the risk.

The cost of importing clubs from the USA differs greatly from Australian Wholesale prices. Most times it is less and often considerably less. But for a couple of brands wholesale prices in Australia are actually less, but the mark up to retail is huge. This mark-up has reduced considerably with regards to just about every golf company in Australia. Not all though.

Store Retail prices have reduced thanks to eBay sellers and importers over the last few years.

It really depends on which brand you look at. Your 10% quote would be correct from some brands but way out on others.

Yes there is a risk buying from eBay but this risk can be removed if you do a little homework and don’t just dive in.

There is quite a lot of fake gear on eBay these days and this makes it harder for the genuine sellers as buyers want to pay nothing for the goods.

eBay sellers don’t have the overheads and if the goods have been in stock for too long , will most often be sold off for what ever they can get. Because if they wait another month the prices those goods will fetch, is going to be even less. Especially with TMs 3 monthly life cycle.

I used to sell a lot of gear on eBay but now only sell gear on there that needs to move. I largely moved away from eBay, due to the prices that people were willing to pay for goods falling. I put this down to a supply demand issue with eBay largely affected from a flooding of fake gear and in small part increased competition from other Genuine sellers.

Profit to be had on eBay compared to 2 years ago has been cut by around 20-30%.

I could name you 5-6 genuine sellers of new equipment on Aussie eBay and dozen from the US.

The main reason for people being caught buying fake gear on eBay is that they don’t buy from a seller with near perfect feedback. They need to read through the feedback and see if any comments have been added that may suggest the buyer latter found out the goods were fake. Oh and my favourite is, don’t expect to pay $400 for a brand new set of Mizuno irons etc. The number of emails I used to get from buyers only willing to spend peanuts for something was amazing.

Sorry for the long post.

Does someone have a big list of which seller is selling genuine stuff and provide warranty and receipt?

and anyone bought it from them before and check with manufacturer and they are genuine stuff.

This list will be a great help for us, so we can use it as reference. smile.gif

It really isn't that hard to tell who is selling Genuine gear on ebay.

There is a number of sellers who sell good stuff. There is also a number of sellers who couldn't care what price they get for a 2 ball or Scotty putter for example.

There is even a few Genuine sellers who frequent these boards.

The Lote issue can't be an embarresment for them really, they've now offered him less than the original deal and he still accepted, that should tell you he either wants to stay, the Bunnies couldn't quite match the cash or he's an idiot.

I'm not quite sure what the answer is but could possibly be alll 3 wink.gif

Union is the one is trouble, they keep buying 2nd string league players that go straight into the Australian side. Their depth is terrible.

League have 3 or 4 players to cover every one that goes over. League haven't missed Lote but what an embarressment the Lote issue is now for Union. Also Rogers for that matter. Lote doesn't like being their but is happy to take the money and do nothing on the field.

The fact Union are offering less money to Gerard and Rathbone speaks volumes.

If you don't consider Motor Racing and especially F1 a sport then do you consider Downhill Skiing or Bob sled a sport?

Both are extreme activties but aren't even close to the demands placed on the body whilst driving an F1 car.

In all cases the occupant is essentially going for a ride. But without input it's going to turn out nasty.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Played a round today with my new Sumo...goes well

QUOTE: 3oneday @ Mar 9 2007, 11:03 AM

he is actually talking about the SUMO, not the square SUMO². If the clubface is closed or open at impact the worlds best driver won't keep you on the golf course, this isn't really what the design is about.

I don't disagree about the look and sound of the SUMO², but the SUMO doesn't look that bad in my opinion.

Must agree, I tried both at a demo day and was quite impressed with the SUMO. It was taking off really hard and it felt very comfortable in my hands. Alot better feel than the SUMO².

The SUMO² on the other hand, was taking off much too high and if I didn't hit it straight was hitting it with a hard draw. The loft on this club was too much for me and I didn't like the closed face. This will be where the draw was coming from as the SUMO i tried didn't have a closed face. Oh and yes the sound of this one was a little annoying.

Look of the the SUMO² was odd but it really shouldn't affect how anyone hits the ball and sound for that matter.

I demoed both drivers at 9.5° with Stiff stock shafts.

Before Marriage: Handicap Between 1-2

Weekly routine was 2 -3 afternoons a week I would practice putting and on occassion chipping. I would play every Saturday and probablly every second Sunday. If I had a bad round with the driver then I would try and fit a range session in one evening during the week especially if there was an open event on the next weekend.

After Marriage: Handiap has been gaining .2 back most weeks and then .1 I seem to have stabilised the handicap around 5 even slipped out to 6 for a few rounds.

Weekly Practice: None
Weekend games: Try to play once a week but probablly 2 in every 3.

Practice is the key. Shortgame especially.

Oh and staying single may help!!!! wink.gif

QUOTE: Reactor @ Feb 23 2007, 02:43 PM

Im a relatively new golfer (less than 1 year playing). I have a new set of Ping G5's (Lie: 3Up, Shaft: Steel 2 Inches+). In the last few months ive started to take golf seriously. Shooting between 85-95. I bought these clubs when i was a complete newb.

My quesiton is, how long will I be able to use the G5s if I keep improving, because i know their suppose to be aimed at the not so good players. If i can make single figures will they still be worth using, or will i have to trade in for a less forgving club? (Thats if i become a better player lol). Can low handicappers use the G5s and still reach full potential playing ability? At the time of purchasing my clubs I thought i would only be a social golfer, but now i really wanna become a good player, just hope i havent wasted 3k on newbie clubs.

Also anyone else that has opionions about the G5 Irons or Driver please feel free to comment.

Great set of clubs, keep using them for as long as you like.

QUOTE: GGM @ Feb 23 2007, 02:46 PM

Had the opportunity last night to try a range of different irons at a demo day. TM R7 TP, Cleveland CG4 Tour, Ping i5, Mizuno MP60.

TM iron was very forgiving (particularly against the MP60's) and flew alot further than the others due to the stronger lofts. I'm not a fan of the graphics in the cavity, but the club head looked great at address.

I like the look of the Srixon I506 irons. Can anyone advise the best place to demo in the Brisbane / Gold Coast area?

Loft on the R7 TP irons is exactly the same as the Mizuno MP60's thoughout the whole set.

Loft of both the I5 and CG4 Tour are the same as the R7's in irons 3i-5i and then they are actually stronger in loft from 6i-PW so you are mistaken in thinking the R7tp have stonger lofts. They actually have the weakest loft equal with the Mizuno's of the 4 sets you mention.

Opinions may vary. What I've got against TM is my belief that there's very good reasons why new TM can be had for the same price as second hand Ping.

FWIW I play an all SRX bag, so these are my opinions from observation, not an indicator of a personal bias based on my own love affair with a particualar name.

Quantity of TM clubs sold allow them to have a lower price. TM also have a much bigger range of product than Ping. The two companies go about their marketing in very different ways. Their is nothing Inferior with regards to TM products.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Where can I get tour gear from?

QUOTE: Fishman Dan @ Feb 23 2007, 09:23 AM

At BSG they'll make you think their clubs are dipped in ambrosia before hitting the market. There is a lot of Tour gear there (pronounced "Overpriced and expensive").

There is a lot of that stuff locally though. A lot of forum users already bring tour things into the country, so save yourself the postage and stress and hunt the local forums wink.gif

Col the TP Construction, Metal and tooling is exactly the same, the following post is off the WRX site and was posted by Taylormade's Chief Technical Officer:

TP is tour-issued

. BSG is full of s**t.

THE TRUTH

Dr. Benoit Vincent is Taylormade's Chief Technical Officer

Sean Toulan: Okay, I know there’s a lot of …#8220; believe me; we’re on the boards, all of the boards, every day. That means me, and Dr. Vincent, and everybody here in this room. So, let me just say this …#8220; that I am so appreciative of the service that these boards have given all of us in the game of golf, and I mean that very, very sincerely. Because for somebody like me, and the guys here in this room, for us to really get an accurate feel of the vibe of what’s going on in the marketplace is incredibly valuable. So, we definitely are on the boards to listen, we’re not on the boards to influence, we’re not on the boards to plant propaganda, we’re just there to listen to what real golfers are talking about with equipment, we’re the same way. The TP thing, I can tell you the TP concept was born because we listen to people like you guys on boards. And that was a very controversial thing, inside the company a few years ago when we launched the R510TP. There were all kinds of things about, gosh, should we talk about the club that Sergio plays isn’t exactly like the club that might be for sale in the public. To me, I’ve seen Sergio’s club, and I’m a pretty nice golfer, I can’t play Sergio Garcia’s driver, I hit it low, right, and about 180. I’m not going to play with that, but it isn’t so much Sergio’s driver, it’s the specs of Sergio’s driver. So, what we use the tour for is to develop new products, and to develop new technologies, and to validate these new technologies. If we can get Sergio Garcia, Retief Goosen, and Darren Clarke, to give us the two thumbs up, there’s a good chance the average golfer is going to like the idea. So, when we developed TP, TP is tour equipment. Is it the same metal …#8220; yes. Is it the same tooling …#8220; in most cases yes, and I’ll explain that in a second. Is it made from the same group of foundries and vendors …#8220; absolutely yes. So, I know there’s a lot of misinformation out there, when I said it’s the exact same tooling, in some case it is, and in some case it isn’t. What I mean by that is the products that we bring out under TP are the products that are most used on the PGA Tour. For instance, where that would vary is sometimes we do additional TP parts that may not come to the marketplace. When we did the original 510 TP driver, that one went into play and was incredibly successful. But we have players out there, Darren Clarke being one, that would have a hard time leaving a golf club to the right. Way more people hit it to the right and don’t like right and would rather have it left than people know Darren Clarke happens to be one of them. So we did another tool of the R510 TP that had a more heel-ward center of gravity, so for a player like a Darren Clarke, he could have that golf club go more to the left for him. That one we never brought to the marketplace, but we did have some on tour. So, we definitely will continue to prototype, and we’ve always done prototyping on the tour, some of those clubs come to market and some of them don’t. We did an R7 Quad HT, we did a 425 HT, the R7 Quad HT came to market and the R7 425 HT has not come to market. So, we use it, probably no different than Ferrari would use Formula 1 racing, you know, at the very highest level, we get constant feedback, some of that is directly applicable to the marketplace, and some is not so much.

Interesting. Just wrapping up the R7, just so for my own edification and the board’s edification, taking all the R7’s, the Tour, the TP, and the retail model, there is no difference between any of the three models, correct?

Sean Toulan: Correct...Let me clarify one thing. We have two models, an R7 and an R7 TP, but they’re completely different spec packages, right? One has a lot of offset, and the lofts are a little stronger, and the blades are bigger, and then we have another one called R7 TP, and then we actually have a third one called R7 Draw, so there isn’t a tour version of any of those clubs, they’re all the same. Of those three R7 Draw, R7 TP, and R7; the R7 TP and R7 are both on Tour.

Dr. Benoit Vincent: Let me answer that question, not from the marketing side, but from the production side, as I’m also in charge of making every single of those. I can guarantee that the head that are used by our tour department to assemble golf clubs for the tour players are the exact same heads that are used in the production line to assemble the R7 TP iron. They are the exact same. When they run out of inventory in the tour department, they just pick some in the shelf of the commercial department. And it’s the same thing for the Superquad TP; it’s the exact same product. Now, to Sean’s point, they’re going to equip them with an X shaft, and they’re going to bend them one or two degrees here or there, that’s for sure, but that’s a classical fitting aspect and that’s what we offer in custom, through our custom service. So you can get, if you really need an X shaft, very heavy, then you can get it because in stock we wouldn’t put that shaft in.

Try and pick clubs that suit your swing. An R7 425 tour version is usually hittable by some better players.

Don't get suckered in to the tour issue debate. If you are after a TM Driver just get yourself a TP driver of any model.

QUOTE: kpac @ Feb 22 2007, 07:22 AM

What are you doing out on the 10th mate??? going to be a lot tougher from out there behind trees to get at the green! 18th is easily gettable with a straight tee shot i would have thought. Two obvious ones for me are the 17th at Southport and the 17th at Gold Coast Country Club.

17th at southport: if you play down the fairway on the left you avoid a corner and about 50m but are left with a small water carry, but definately the only way to have either a crack at the green for two.

17th at Gold Coast Country Club: Again play down the left and you take out a corner and no water. much easier approach.

One of the reasons these two stand out is that when there is a decent comp at either of the courses, these are the lines the majority take.

Yeah, can't see any advantage in going out onto 10 when playing 18 at Colonial. Makes the hole longer and a much harder approach shot.

Agree with you on 17 at southport. Do you mean 16 at GGCC and not 17? As I think 17 is the par 3?

Beancounter,

I would agree normally, but the sheep shaggers have that style bowler in MacMillan and Styris, and both of them have been going for plenty.

To be honest, it appears to be very difficult to bowl on grounds where you can hit a six over cover off the splice of the bat, and perhaps on such a ground batting second is an advantage because you know how many you need.

Yes I was thinking the same thing. I really think on these smaller grounds it is better to bat second as it seems almost impossible to protect the short boundries.

We needed to be batting at 6-7 per over from ball one in the last two games.
340-350 on grounds with 45 metre boundaries is about par with 270-280 at the G.
Moe was spot on about one thing, where are you meant to put fieldsmen when a guy french cuts three in a row??
The shaggers chase a total like no other team in World cricket, especially when playing the Aussies.
Great games of cricket to watch regardless of result.

I agree, despite Hayden making a record score, he was much too slow for the first 100 runs especially his first 50. He should break his toe right at the start of the innings because the last 80 runs was more like it.
