Topic: Golf Talk / Excess baggage charges for golf gear

I fly Cathay Pacific and they don’t charge. I have a large bag in a larger wheeeled travel cover. All my clothes and shoes for a month fit easiliy into the bag pockets and inside the travel bag. I carry a small bag with camera etc.

The giant travel bag goes in the hold. At the other end I wheel it away unpack and go play golf. Easy.

If I am holidaying in Australia I normally go and buy a cheap collapsible buggy for around 25-30 AUD and at the end of the holiday give to a small 9 hole course to use as they please. If its Asia or Europe then use the Buggy or hire a pull cart.

Whitednj

Went to the same pro as you ( Mark at the Willows) when I was back in Aus in April and he got me to do the same thing and it’s working like a treat. I watch impact and then follow the ball..and thus have a full turn…great stuff.

Your first tip was the best… get lessons from a pro and no doubt that Mark is one of the best teachers.

“ah baloney..I have never had any golf equpment that ever needed a warranty claim…seriously what are the chances”

Pretty good I’d say!! I bought a full set of Fusion irons a few years back and after 6 weeks the heads started to come loose. I had bought them fitted in Australia. Callaway US replaced them all and flew them to China for me. Try getting that service from E bay !!

It’s like house fire insurance…it may never happen but if it does is it worth not having!!

Topic: The Lounge / cairns

I visited OZ for a break in April and I stayed at the Rydges on the esplanade and got a great room for 99AUD also have a great dinner buffet for around 30AUD. I once stayed at the Balaclava a few years ago and it was the pits!! I hope it’s changed.

I played twice at Sea Temple and it was great..a couple of the greens weren’t too crash hot but overall very enjoyable. I played once at Paradise Palms but it has really gone to the dogs compared to a few years ago, a bit of waste of money especially at 120 a round.

Enjoy your stay!!

Topic: Golf Talk / Golf Club memberships must change

May be the answer is community and player support, look at some of the absolutely great 9 hole coureses in Nth Qld such as Millaa Millaa and Cardwell, fantastic courses and $10 a round. No carts or drinks on course but there again most people go there to play golf..funny eh? And every weekend members come and get their hands dirty to maintain THEIR course, which they generously share with non members.

Otherwise well, its just a business like anything else..trying paying the membrship and green fees that we pay here in Asia and you will realise just how fortunate you are.

Topic: Golf Talk / What is it with Americans of 'a certain age'?

I’m nearly 61 and 72 holes in three days in 28-30C temp, well just done 90 ( 2 times 36 and one times 18 ) over the past three days. I just love seeing 25 year olds falling by the wayside !! The only reason the last day was 18 was that it pissed down with rain, with thunder and lightning and we couldn’t play!! By the way my playing buddy is 62!!

Topic: Golf Talk / Changing Grips: Part One New!

I use the water activated tape from Golfsmith ( USA) and it works a treat. To get the old grips off I had the boys here make a needle fitting and just use ordinary compressed air we have in the factory. No problems and a nice clean job with no smells.

Topic: Golf Talk / the best golf tantrum you've seen?

An american mate of mine after failing on two attempts to get a ball out of the bunker tried to break his SW across his knee. The club slipped and went down the front of his shin. He yelped dropped the club but the head caught him on the ankle. Great cussing and swearing he tried to kick the club, went arse over tit backwards and the grip end of the wedge hit him in the crutch. This happened on the third and I think we were all except the injured one, still laughing at the 18th !! Much pride lost that day!!

I don’t often agree with you Racinfarmer but this time you’re on the money !! Golf is for all of us High handicappers included. Some of you guys are in a hurry for your own funeral. When all is said and done we hit a little white ball with a stick around some grass- hardly worth killing someone with a golf ball or having a heart attack.

Topic: Golf Equipment / COUNTERFEIT Titleist Pro V1 - AVOID!!!

The-Jas. Sorry mate but I disagree. I run a large and successful manufacturing business in China so i do have some insight into business in general and business here in particular.

To import at a cheap price is one thing, to know that you are buying something so cheap from a so called Titleist factory without checking with Tietlist means one of two things.
1. You are doing a dodgy deal that you don’t want Teitlist to find out about. That in my book is totally unethical.
2. You just want something cheap that you can mark up to buggery and don’t really care where it’s from as long as it looks like the real thing.
I state again that if these fakes had been of a better quality, no one would have known until they hit the bloody thing and for many not even then.

In either of the above cases the consumer looses in the end.

No business is a charity but there are certain levels of ethics that in my view companies should adhere to. Maximise profits by all means BUT DON”T CHEAT YOUR CUSTOMERS!!

Topic: Golf Equipment / COUNTERFEIT Titleist Pro V1 - AVOID!!!

You know there is one word for this and its GREED!!! I don’t suppose anyone in the UK company bothered to check with Tietlist eh? No…. because you want something for nothing and bugger the ethics.!!
The trouble is the more”RESPECTABLE” companies that import like this the worse it will be for the golfers! If these had been half way good copies then they wouldn’t have known the bloody difference! There are many many really good copies of all Teitlist balls available here, so unless the importers do their homework and don’t expect something for nothing- we the golfers will suffer.
Sorry but this sort of thing really gives me the SHITS!!

Topic: Golf Talk / Flying with Golf clubs

It just makes sense to lock your bag, well it does to me anyway. I have insurance too but I would rather not tempt fate, either that someone will take something out or probably even more important that they will put something in. I fly internationally with my clubs at least five times per year. I have had my club heads checked for dirt on four or five occasions when coming into Australia, which is a good thing, shoes always.

I use a padded travel bag ( chinese brand) and when it wears out I just buy another one. At 50 AUD not a drama.

Topic: Golf Talk / Flying with Golf clubs

Good advice Gribbles. I have an aluminium pole with an umbrella type fitting on one endhich is great. Also use cable ties on all zippers. I also pack underwear etc around the clubs in plastic bags.
When you fly back make sure that your golf shoes are absolutely clean and somewhere in your luggage where you can get at them easily, because Quarantine will undoubtedly want to check them.

Topic: Golf Talk / i hate the driving range.

I much prefer the course for practice rather than the range, but when at the range I try to make it interesting. Unless I have some specific mechanics to work on I will plat imaginary holes. Drive to a target, hit a long iron to a target and pitch to a target. Must admit I don’t chip at the range seems a waste of time much better to use the practice greens.
