170kgs, Holy sheet….....

I think I could possibly get the 70 out, so long as it wasn’t actually a free weight and on a smith machine or similar where it can’t attack me! I’m a pretty fair woosbag with little girl arms. Its the wonderful thing about golf and long drive, it takes all types.

When you consider the guy that came 3rd in the world this year is about 6’1” and 180ish pounds it shows how little strength actually means ultimately when you can accelerate the club and hit the middle.

Thats said, long levers and the correct strength will normally prevail.

Topic: Golf Talk / How did you all play this weekend?

Sat 41pts. Shot 3 red and generally stunk it up.

Made 4 putts outside of 10 feet for par and holed a 30 yarder for eagle to keep me in it. Just.

I’ve ony been back playing for about 6 weeks and its nice to have a couple of solid sub par rounds under my belt.

Yeah, I was just trying to show the evolution in equipment.

For 2 years I was all over the shop learning as well, and made most of the same mistakes you will on the way through.

OK I’ll play.

You will very quickly notice the difference between A_B’s setup and mine, I’ve been a LD pro for nearly 4 years now and understand very very clearly what works for me. Nothing much changes, I have a couple of shafts installed to “learn” how they react, but apart from that they are all pretty much identical.

Geek DCT 6 Graman UL540 XX (2 of these, 1 practice 1 good)
Geek DCT 7
Graman UL540 XX
Geek DCT 6 Graman UL740 XX (this is a great club, but shaft at 78 grams is a bit much for me)
Geek DCT 6
Harrison Striper XX 60grams
Geek DCT 6 UST V2 Long Drive X flex

All of these heads are 1 – 1.5 open and the 6’s are all between 5.5 and 5.7 actual loft, the 7 is about 7.5. They are all fitted with Lamkin Crosslines dead standard and are 49” vertical, about 47 3/4” USGA measurement.

The 2 clubs at the top are the ONLY ones to have seen the competition tee. (the 6 and 7) I’m extremely lucky to be on the Geek Long Drive staff and be able to go through however many heads is neccessary to reach my goals.

Ironically, the Graman 740 and the Harrison will probably never hit a ball in actual anger and the V2 will get a quick run, once it has a new head on it.

My “play” driver is a Geek DCT 7.5 with a Graman UL680 X flex in it. 44 3/4 inches. The 98 gram shaft makes the shorter driver feel like my LD clubs and keep the swingweight up in the high D’s for me. I am also working with a Geek DCT 8.5 with a Graman UL440 S flex, trying to spin the ball more off the tee to straighten the flight profile a bit. Even at 120 plus mph, the s flex plays fine and only launches at around 12.5 with a 8.5* head.

I did once tee a 64* wedge up about 2 inches and give it the driver swing. It missed my ear by about 4 inches on the way up.

That’s it. LDG has hit the nail on the head. Simulate the perfect lie.

LDG is an absolute flusher, good advice to follow!

Awwww, shucks.

I am actually the best golfer currently here at the moment. The girl working for me plays off 41…....

Just whack the club into the ground and make a little lump, stick the ball on top and you’re good to go. Unless of course the tee is in bad repair, in which case I’ll tee it up just a little.

Just enough to simulate a perfect lie either way.

You and me can go and play behind A.B.

I’ll hit up on him all day and eventually when he hits one back at us, it will still be a hundred yard walk to get to my ball. Right A.B.?

Normally they are only carried for protection!

I find the sharper, heavier head great for those waskily wabbits, plus there is always a wedge sitting behind the counter here if someone is stupid enough to come in with a knife and try and rob me!

Imagine 130 plus mph with a sandwedge and some adrenaline behind it.

56 and 60 RTG 588 Wedges. LEFT HANDED.

I just shipped some Cleveland Wedges over from the US and bought these as well, for some reason. I really wanted the 900 series which I got, but these came along for the ride.

The 56 is 35.5” long is fitted with a Dynamic Gold Shaft and a GP Tour Wrap grip, the 60 is 35.25” long same shaft and grip. Both shaft bands have been removed, but its a DG step pattern.

They both look as though they are about 10 years old, as the shafts are a bit dull, but the heads themselves are in pretty good nick and the grooves are still good. The 60 is extremely rusty and the 56 still has some silver on the face. The 56* has a little bit of lead tape on the back.

I already have the 588’s in gunmetal so these are just surplus to my needs.

I will include the standard postage in the price (In Australia)

email me if you need some pics.

Topic: Golf Talk / New Competition: Australia's Best Driver

AB. Yes, I am being slightly critical as I believe this is a model which has at least in part been tried and has failed. Look at the number of tries at Long Drive events around the country, they have plummetted, in fact at one event last year there were 5 hitters, total, accross all 5 divisions.

Will I encourage and assist you, you betcha. You know full well I am trying to grow LONG DRIVE specifically, I just fail to see the benefits on encouraging mediocraty (sp) with amatuer events and would rather see efforts put into the extreme side of the sport and securing sponsors and crowds for the guys that genuinely work hard to succeed.

Long Drive PROFESSIONALS have a hard enough time convincing people of how far they hit it without someone seeing a “token” long drive event won at 275.

Just my 2 cents.

Topic: Golf Equipment / why cant they make tour looking bag with 14 dividers

I don’t actually know…...

but could it be that “tour” bags are sometimes needed to carry more than 14 clubs for travel or practice rounds? I know to me a bag with 14 slots is completely useless, but there would have to be demand for non grandpa bags too.

Hmmm, interesting.

Getting people to stand up in front of others and show them EXACTLY what they have or don’t have.

AB, run a very successful long drive event for the existing LD pros, draw a spectacular crowd and it will grow, trying to get Joe Average involved in the hitting of the balls in my mind will never be the way forward because they are far too intimidated to get out there and do it.

I know we have discussed this in length, but I’m just restating my thoughts, you know how hard it is for us to get our members out to try long drive, FOR FREE…..and only amongst themselves.

I think you are still barking up the wrong tree, sorry dude.

White pants…....especially if you are lucky enough to get the lycra embedded versions specially shipped by a sponsor that makes them in the UK.

Of course when they also come in various other cool colours, rock on!

Topic: Golf Talk / What is a game worth in $$$

There is always a point at which a round of golf becomes an experience verses a round of golf.

Marquee courses deserve to charge a premium because of the history, or the initial setup cost with being there in the 1st place. If St Andrews was 500 quid, I’m sure they would still fill the place, just because. That said there are some pretty ordinary places now charging $30 – $50 that should still be $15 and be grateful for everyone that comes through the door!

Ironically I paid $40 a reasonably well known track a couple of months ago and felt completely and utterly screwed. The greens had just been chopped, it was full of hackers and it was generally a fairly depressing sight. I specifically asked if the greens were OK when I rang and was informed they were good and I asked if they were busy with bookings to be told there was no one around.

Such is life.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Lie angle - demo clubs/trying before buying?

Hi All,

I’ve already received a bunch of useful advice here, so thanks in advance for any responses to the below.

If I buy new irons, and they have the lie angle adjusted. What does that involve? ie – is it realistic to think that the shop would adjust them so I can hit them before buying and know what they feel like? Or is it (as I assume) too hard to adjust them for the shop to do it until I’ve pulled out my wallet?

As a bit of background – I’m looking for new irons, and am planning to do some demo days, and see a fitter for some advice. But being 6’2” and swinging fairly fast I’m assuming the club fitter is going to say something like “buy either A, B or C, get the lie angle adjusted to x, get these shafts and such and such length”. If I go into a shop with those instructions they’ll laugh at me won’t they?

How does someone know that the customizations are right for them? Is it just a matter of trusting the club fitter?

Thanks again for any tips.

Cheers,
Dim

If you walk in with a set of intructions and they laugh at you, run. Run very fast.

Unless they laugh and then offer to help you to determine a new set of numbers they believe are practical.(it will only their opinion and not a matter of fact!) I did kind of giggle at the guy that came in the other week with some specs, requesting S300 DG’s 2” upright. He was 70 plus and 5’8”, but he had tried one of his grandsons irons and though he hit it pretty good. I “helped” him understand and refit him into something more practical for his ability and body type.

Topic: Golf Talk / I am anal about.....

Nothing, sorry.

I have a few things I do as “routine” but they’re not bizarre, the pre shot routine is always the same etc, I use a 5 or 10 cent piece as a marker, I use the same tees but not to the point of being anal.

I’m fairly relaxed when it comes to that stuff but I love watching a few of the boys I play with regularly and their little foibles.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Anyone use a Proforce V2?

I actually put a V2 MOI X flex into one of my long drive heads (6* Geek DCT) and it felt great and went even better.

It was just inserted with no tipping or butt cut and consistently put up ball speeds in excess of 190mph which is good from a standard off the shelf X flex.

Topic: Golf Equipment / Launch Monitors

Hibore…..

My 2 cents here. A lot of people really don’t like my launch monitor either. The number of guys that come to me and perceive that they are bing shown numbers 10 % or more shorter that what they see as real world is staggering.

But once they understand we are talking about a calculation using zero wind, 60% humidity at sea level at around 20* c they understand a little better. When they realise we are only looking for a comparison between clubs and we are not using it as an actual representation of the real world things become far easier.

I do happen to think my launch monitor is a little harsh at the top end, but that may also be a result of me having flattened faces on a lot of my practice heads and some fatigue in balls.
