Topic: Golf Equipment / Vision Golf Ball Test Boz, I’d be interested to know if I can mitigate the shearing on the Xperts by “pre-heating” the balls before use. Was thinking of sitting them in warm water or otherwise might do the trick ? I recall talk of this as a performance improvement in the glory days of Pinnacle as the long drive balls of choice – in fact I believe some suggested they popped them into the microwave which sounds like a recipe for trouble to me. Your thoughts ?? |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Vision Golf Ball Test Boz – Shearing is the right description for the damage. Of note all 3 games were played on perfectly sunny winter days with ambient temps of 15-19deg. 1st and 3rd was at new home club (Twin Creeks), 2nd at Huntingdale so none at “scruffy” courses that could course undue ball wear/damage. Look forward to the next gen products and testing them. Guru – you tell such lies and offer much needed flattery ;-) FWIW – My son and his golfing mate are besotted with the UV Yellows. So much so they put them back in the bag when they play any hole with water or hazards that may risk them losing ‘em. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Vision Golf Ball Test After trawling through this, and the other test posts, I felt obliged to see firsthand what all the fuss is about. I’m an anti-brand wh@re and love the opp to find a better product than the mass offerings. Anyway I ponied up the cash at Rebel for a dozen Experts and waited for the chance to trial them. Have now played 3 rounds with them (using 6 balls) and must say they haven’t quite lived up to the hype for me. Balls look great, distance is OK, feel is OK and control is average – certainly nothing mind blowing in these factors but comparable. My major gripe is durability – I just tear them up in no time to the point I’d be lucky to get 3 or 4 holes before needing to replace. In each game so far I’ve used 2 on the front nine and switched to other balls. I’m no monster (or chopper) and am doing the damage with normal iron shots (playing Wishon 560MC). This leaves them beaten and bruised worse than any other ball I’ve played with of late – with the possible exception of the Bridgestone B330 range. Am very surprised by this given the glowing recommendations from the ISG faithful. Do I put this down to irregularities of my swing, my clubs, a suspect batch of balls or otherwise ? I’d welcome any insights or ideas. |

Topic: Golf Talk / Victoria Golf Club I’ve played there utilising the stay and play package listed on their website. As I travel to Melb for work regularly I’ve found its cheaper than a city hotel plus you to stay in the historic old clubhouse. The catering is as good as any pretentious city restaurant. I was slotted into the Saturday morning members comp and my partners have been very friendly – engaging in conversation and offering assistance on how to, and not to, play various holes. I’m told they can organise golf at other famous sandbelt courses as part of the package if you want to soften the blow of the air fares. Check out their website for details or call the club directly. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Stand Bags
Have the Edge and love it – it is a bit heavier than other bags but I have a Vaporlite if I’m feeling weak ;-) As my two buggies became donors for my son’s billy kart project late last year haven’t used the Edge on a cart. Sure it would work fine as the stand mechanism wouldn’t get in the way. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Best place to buy Ogio bags?
Precisely the point …. in this day and age its quite clear branding and image is far more important than fit, performance or functionality. Thats quite OK so long as you understand it attracts a $$ premium to follow the crowd. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Best place to buy Ogio bags? After scoring local shops for stock and coming up empty I ordered an Ozone and Vaporlite from the US and got them delivered to my door for $246 all up. Found the seller on eBay and contacted them to organise a bundled and delivered price. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / golf bag - chinese 3 years back I looked into buying a bunch of bags from a supposedly large and reputable bag manufacturer in Asia for promotional items with my company details embrodied in. Proof looked got and was going to be very cheap (~$20US each for an order of 400) BUT when I go the sample we pulled the plug Very flimsy construction – used it for a couple of rounds and just about everything fell off or broke. Just remember …. quality costs less in the long run ! |

Topic: Golf Talk / Getting rid of surface rust in cavities, any suggestions? I found Coke (as in the Cola) very effective at this – yes truly. Merely soak the irons overnight, or for a couple of days, in Coke and then use a stiff brush and mild steel wool on the affected areas. This is very effective for sweet spot wear on forged irons and brings them back to new. Also works an absolute treat to put some shine into your putter – I like things shiny !! |

Yes definitely less uptight than other local venues and very enjoyable. It does without doubt have the biggest greens I’ve ever played …. in fact I think its the 6th where the green is AT LEAST 50 metres front to back with a couple of big teirs in the middle to boot. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / New bag - advice needed
Agree with the above …. I now have 3 Ogios (1 each of ‘08 Vaporlite, ‘07 Ozone and ‘08 Edge) and they are as they say in the classics … “the ducks guts”. Purchased 1 of mine locally and the two others from the US … $AUD makes buying OS attractive even given the freight costs of a bag. |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Club fitting supplies IMHO – If you want to get the best price its as simple as finding a reputable medium to small supplier (use forums, ebay feedbacks and alike to gather this info), getting a couple of mates together (to increase the volume and share freight costs) and then order as a bundle so you can maximise the discount they’ll give you. I’ve done this many times and you will get varied prices depending on who you deal with and if they have the stock but its always below their advertised prices. On Monday I have 2 new Ogio Vaporlite bags arriving from the US as there no stock here I could find and they did them for a very good price delivered (bags are generally quite expensive to freight). Happy shopping… but as they say in the classics “caveat emptor” |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Club fitting supplies Ordered from 2putt golf – they were advertised for $109 USD each + frieght but I just asked for a single price for the 5 of the same loft shipped via USPS priority and was amazed at the price offered – may well have been a mistake on their end but I wasn’t going to ask twice !! I just checked my credit card statement again and the final price was slightly higher than I thought and equated to $91 AUD each landed at my door which is still damn cheap for the head, headcover, grip and ferrule. Despite the design being “mature” the Nemesis are a sweet looking head and play very well … for me anyways !! |

Topic: Golf Equipment / Club fitting supplies Per the above it depends entirely on what and importantly how much you need. For small orders (couple of grips, shafts or alike) local suppliers are definitely the go with Clubmate, Exec and others all providing excellent services, rapid delivery and fair pricing. For larger orders (or less urgent requirements) and given the strength of the $AUD right now US suppliers are a very attractive option with a myriad on offer depending what you want to buy. I’ve bought from quite a few over the years with no hassle from them or customs. As an example I recently ordered 5 x SMT Nemisis driver heads from the US and had them on my door in less than 5 days for <$80 each delivered inc headcovers, ferrules and grips. I bought the shafts locally given there was little difference in $ and things like shafts are expensive, fragile and difficult to ship internationally. |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Peninsula trip Just come back from a 4-day 8-round trip down there and can recommend:- Flinders – well and truly a hidden gem. Not the sternest test but a beautiful spot, enjoyable course and lovely locals. Green fees were only $25 13th Beach – both courses – great value at $60 for all day play with nobody in sight on the day we played. Good facilities and eatery too. Moonah Links – both courses - challenging test BUT don’t play on the weekend as too busy. $130 for the 2 rounds inc cart was good value The Cape (or RACV Cape Schanck) – the poor mans National with a great rolling layout that will eat balls. Very good value for $39 inc cart |

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / Kangaroo Valley or Mount Broughton? Mt Broughton is a fantastic course BUT will bruise you if the wind is up and you play the back tees – the rough is brutal in every sense. Last played there 2 years back and the Par 3 2nd was a full driver into the wind just to carry the water in front of the green. In fairness to the course the landing areas are wide and there are bail out options on all holes. As to the pie shop in Kangaroo Valley you won’t miss it …. they are certainly big chunky pies. Enjoy the game. |
