Topic: Golf Equipment / what percentage of tour pros use a Titleist ball?

What are these “facts” you are enlightening us with? That most pro’s use Pro V1’s proves what exactly to the average handicap golfer? – that Titleist make the best golf balls. NXT’s and DT’s included

What are these “facts” you are enlightening us with? That most pro’s use Pro V1’s proves what exactly to the average handicap golfer? – not misguided people can spend their money on whatever they like. All I try and do is give the readers of these posts some good factual information rather than some of the other stuff that gets written here. You will have noticed if you have been through my posts some of that info on fitting etc

Perhaps while you are giving us the facts you could update us on the legal action between Titleist and Bridgestone regarding the formers alleged ripping off of designs for the ProV from the latter.
- no update to be given this was all settled many months ago and the word alleged you use here is actually factual well done.

Gents,

I am not denying I love the brand. Why wouldn’t you? There is nothing wrong with being a fan of the best. Like a lot of us on this site I spend a lot of time researching my hobby and know quite a bit about the number 1 brand and company in golf. Acushnet have held this title for a long time so anyone in business would be trying to work out their formula and why it works so well. Hence, my interest.

The post was intended to find out how many of those who visit this site are actually aware of some of the facts out there. Let’s face it there is a lot of marketing crap out there.

As for working for them I would love to. You would think it would be as easy as selling Coke but then you read some of the comments that golfers make on this site and it makes you wonder. It is a pity I am no salesman.

3 large..even go retail with 3 large

D2 or DI Driver $450 ish
906F fairway $300
Titleist AP2’s irons…$1400 ish
Hybrids (1) $220
Vokeys sm (2) $350
Putter $200

thats $2920….ought to be a nice set up!!.

I think you’ll find the driver, fway and hybrid are now a liitle cheaper. May leave enough room in the budget for a Scotty Cameron.

Unfortunately the local town consists of a pub & a service station. The area is mostly occupied by retirees or young families & is 45min from a decent sized town. having said that , it is a very pleasant spot & a testing golf course.

A bad day on the golf course is better than no golf at all. :(

No one who ever had a lesson would have a swing like mine

brissyjoe,

I think you said you were at the demo day at vic park last month. Go there and get fitted out. Lots of good brands out there but Titleist is right up there with the best especially their new irons.

Must be great to be able to fulfill a childhood dream as well

if I have got the right guy he shot 94 at Pacific Harbour today – 6 shots worse than the worst score, that must have been a pleasure for his amateur partners to witness

Topic: Golf Talk / Playing in Pro-Ams

I find your attitude a bit disturbing Trent. How good do you reckon your game would really be if your living depended on it. Having to pay all your living and golfing costs playing a strange course every day.

Its easy critical of a pro who is a rough day, week or month. Or even has someone whose dream is a little beyond their current capability. The reality of the pro-am circuit is pretty brutal.

The pro-am circuit prize money levels are absolutely miserable. My understanding is that all of the tournaments on the NSW circuit add up to something a bit under $1m. Its a sad but true fact that 15 to 20 years ago this figure was higher. Factoring in inflation this would be the equivalent of $3m to $4m in todays terms.

Considering the costs at best its only possible for a handful of players to actually make money on the circuit. Some players who play other tours may be able to supplement their income via pro-ams. But they will do so at the expense of players who only play pro-ams.

The pro-am circuit provides players an opportunity to hone their games. Yes lots of them are dreamers who will leave the circuit to take up other roles in golf or outside of golf. Many of them bust a nut working in the off season to finance their next tilt at professional golf. But a few of them will struggle for a while but then seemingly overnight make the progession to higher levels.

I think it is terrible if a guy who hasn’t broken 80 all year continues to get starts when a young up and coming pro may misses out. What about giving the young guys a go who may shoot 80 one day but 68 the next. This guy is obviously struggling if he hasn’t broken 80 for the year anywhere. That is playing to an 8 handicap at best as some of the country courses would have pars of less than 72.

This is not to mention the poor amateurs who pay good money often in the hope of playing with a good golfer.

Topic: Golf Talk / Playing in Pro-Ams

I played in a pro-am today (I am not a golf pro) and lots of the guys hit the ball great. I was unlucky enough to have a pro in my group who had 80 off the bat. I beat him by 5 shots off the stick and did not play the best myself. If anything, I reckon I left 2 shots on the course from a few missed putts. I have played in many pro-ams and so many of the pro’s I have played with hit it on the head and I mean on the head. Either they are dreaming or I really do not know? I get back home and check out the PGA website for QLD and the guy I played with has not broken 80 in any event he has played in this year? He was a nice enough guy but something is possibly going wrong there?
I am sure many of you have played in Pro-Ams and if so, did the pro you play with have a million or just could not hit the ball on the planet? It sure beats me how they can get a positive bank balance? I am happy to have my 74-77 and really could not care if I had 80 but it seems to me that even if you have par on a course, the pay day is not enough to cover the entry fee or expenses for the day? Why do they do it or the ones on the poverty line?

Chris Keus????

Topic: Golf Talk / Norman: In Two Minds at British Open

Certainly there were times when Norman didn’t finish the job. Sometimes you will gas it. That’s just part of being in contention. But Norman had a habit of obliterating fields on the US Tour from start to finish too. If he was on song he would win by a heaps.

I think other players hit there “once in a lifetime” shots against Norman more than anyone else. Poor buggar ;-) If anything, I’d label him the unluckiest player ever.

It’s not choking when Tway holes a bunker shot, or Mize chips in from 40 yards, or Calcavecchia stumps his approach from a trampled down lie in the rough. Remember that driver Norman hit on the final hole of the play off at Royal Troon against Calc and Grady…. it ran forever to reach that trap. End result: dead!!

So may woulda coulda shoulda’s. It sucks.

he shot 40 on the back nine before Tway holed the trap shot. Not many people remember that. Don’t get me wrong I am a huge Norman fan but he did struggle to get the job done in the Majors.

The thing I struggle with is the number of one time major winners that beat him to win their one and only major – what a sad list it is

1. Tway 1986 PGA
2. Mize 1987 Masters
3. Calc 1990 British Open
4. Azinger 1993 PGA – played super that day just kept lipping out
5. Pavin 1995 US Open
Olazabel beat him in a couple to I believe although he won more than 1 major, I think he led after 36 holes when Grades won the PGA as well

It is a sad list, Norman is arguably the best ball striker to ever play the game and look at the guys he ran second to, it just doesn’t seem fair.

Still I’m sure he could shout us a drink if he wanted to

I have heard there is some unresolved tension which dates back to last year when Harrington beat Sergio in a playoff for The British.

Is sergio a bad loser?

Topic: Golf Equipment / What bounce is ideal for your Sand Wedge and Lob wedge?

depends entirely on how you play and where you play

some people chop down on it and take big divots – more bounce is better for them also if you play a course with lots of sand in the bunkers and thick rough go for more bounce

others tend to clip the ball off the turf or play courses where there is little or no sand in the bunkers and hard firm fairways, these players should use less bounce

some players have a sand wedge with lots of bounce and then a lob with not a lot – hence trying to achieve the best of both worlds as many courses have inconsistent sand levels in their bunkers

players that play a variety of courses ( ie tour pros etc ) have multiple wedge ( bounce and loft ) options that change depending on where they play and how many wedges they have room for in their bag

other things to think about are sole width, camber, lie angle ( which can actually change from your irons as you play different types of shots with your wedges ) and whether you need the extra spin provided by spin milled or not

My advice is to go and see a quality fitter who can discuss the above with you and work out the best fit for you. You will also need a brand of wedge that has multiple options

Topic: Golf Equipment / Titleist's new driver

the 909 series which I believe will be released later this year has been played by the winner in the US the last two weeks.

Titleist always test their products on tour before releasing for sale and it seems the testing is going pretty well. The driver was first seen by the pros at the US Open and I believe there are now over 20 drivers in use each week including one in the bag if JIM FURYK Srixon’s number 1 guy.

I look forward to seeing these drivers in the flesh.
