Mark why would you be even thinking Premierships? If the GF was played now you’d have to play North who have already cleaned you up once this year.

Topic: Golf Talk / know a good coach?

I heard that if you get a lesson with Bryan Ferguson you’re there 5 minutes and he wheels the Henry Griffiths van out and tries to squeeze another $1500 out of you for a set of new bats.

Topic: Golf Talk / know a good coach?

why? there are plenty of good coaches working on ranges..

It’s probably a personal thing but I think the default approach at a driving range is to head to the lesson bay and work on perfecting your plane by extensive video analysis. The futile aim is to perfect your 5 iron and Driver shots. There’s a lot more to the game than that.

I want to learn at a course where you can be taught the game rather than how to swing. 90% of lessons are golf swing lessons.

Hi I’m after the same thing. Live in Hawthorn and would prefer a pro at a course (public or private) rather than a driving range pro if possible.

Any recommendations welcome.

Is it possible that Richmond could lose all 22 games? Has this ever been done before?

Bombers weren't 'that' bad Friday night but then again, Nth weren't that good either.

Give it a break Judge - we pumped you. And that was without the best two players on our list (Wells and Thompson).

Even Hirdy wanted to put the colours on by the end of the evening!

Great time to be a Tigers fan.

Just when you thought it could not get any worse there is talk of Kent Kingsley coming into the side.

Until I see a pro that wheels out three or four different carts alongside the HG cart and gives you the choice then I will continue to believe that these pros are no better than the old time insurance agents. Ie totally motivated by commission and acting in their best interests and not yours.

How can anyone think this stuff is better than the top brands? Is there a single touring pro playing these clubs?

My god I cannot believe I'm watching this. I thought the Cats were the bet of the round but seriously...

Could this be the first ever 200 point loss?

Lads - finally back in the land of the living after a marathon 5 day stint in the Western District. Before you hang up the binoculars in your racing career you must head to the Bool. It is great fun. Tie it in with a game at Port Fairy and a win in the Galleywood and you have close to the perfect trip.

As for the mighty Bent one Steve Moran summed it up best in a poleaxed conversation I had with him that night saying he's "a poor mans Might and Power".

Stick with him in the Houlahan in two weeks boys - he was only 95% fit on Wednesday.

Roos - David Hale

Not sure where you got that from as (for some reason) he's a favourite of the Roos fans at bigfooty.

Now Leigh Brown or Shannon Watt on the other hand...

Topic: Sports Talk / The Stawell Gift

Liz - a lot of what you are saying is probably more pertinent to pro running twenty years ago than it is today.

Similar to the horse racing game it is not really as crooked as was the case in the old days. The main reason is that there is not as much money involved today.

There is still betting on these events but it is only a few weekend type picnic bookies who frame a market. Given that some of the markets yesterday were set to about 200% (no joke) it is hard to work out who is more crooked - the athletes or the bagmen.

A couple of other quick points:

- Josh Ross won the Gift off scratch two years ago

- Don't be duped by the classic Herald Sun headline "Allen backed from 40/1 into 2/1". This is quite different to a Derby Day plunge of the same magniude. Based on what the 4 part time bookies hold, such a "plunge" could be achieved with half a dozen $50 bets.

Topic: Golf Talk / Masters Coverage

I agree 100% about the coverage. Funnily enough the first two days were not bad. Then they went ad crazy during the final round. Cannot believe they missed Johnson's second to 18.

Superb hands round the throat effort from Appleby. Tournament for the taking after 16 on day 3. Then goes 5 over for his next 3 holes to slip out of the lead completely and leave the stage to Tiger. The Shark would have been proud.

Was he the only bloke going direct at the stick on 12? Mental error right there Jimmy.

Topic: Sports Talk / The Stawell Gift

Liz - not sure how you think the winner blew anyone away. It was a photo finish and it took a couple of minutes to declare the winner.

Also the red hot $1.50 pop (MacFarlane) got rolled so I think this flies in the face of what you're saying. In any case as Moe said when the backmarker wins it's rarely a con job as their marks are invariably pretty tight.

The real cheating happens in the other races. The 800m final was a good example where the 1/2 elect (Liddicoat) had been hiding for around 6 months with a view to cleaning up at Stawell. Luckily he went down in a driving finish against a bloke who had raced honestly all season. As Robert Walls would say "good triumphed over evil".

Also there was a terrific punch up after the 400m frontmarkers final when the short priced fave copped a massive elbow at the 200m and ended up going down by a head. Shame that I don't think they televised that race.

Gift Day is a top day.

Topic: Golf Talk / Bored with Stableford

I think the key is to have some element of gambling involved. The game never seems boring then.

I heard once about this crazy betting game where you bet on the result whilst your ball is in the air but have never understood how this could work in practice.

Topic: Your Favourite Golf Courses / National Golf Club

I cannot believe how complex that membership structure is.

Are any other clubs operating such a confusing multi-level structure with secondary markets for some classses and not others?

And why is National Golf Holdings sending junk mail asking me to sign up? Why would I want to fork out $2000+ a year to play at a club 100km away?
