As we all can understand Tony that you are busy person. This would be the reason for delaying answering Craness75 question about some of your earlier work. However can you please make some time to answer the question or provide us an update on your latest projects you have been working on. As I speak on behalf most of the posters and readers of this forum that we are always interested in what you are up to.

Great questions. Mate, I'll leave the Yarrambat situation for the moment and deal with it in depth when I have time - late next week hopefully.

Goonawarra

It was a virtually flat cattle property - squelching mud up to the tops of gumboots when I first walked on it. The instruction to me was to design an integrated golf/residential estate for the then Housing Commission. I established safe boundaries to the entire course, using time-honoured buffer requirement of minimum 75 metres between centre of play of any golf hole and any relevant boundary. The course was constructed on that basis. Town planners engaged to work through the roads and residential infrastructure decided my buffers were too generous. Despite several formal written objections I made to clients, planners, and eventually the Premier, the result was that some boundaries were pushed further towards the course in final planning determinations, in the 'interests' of increasing the residential yield.

The course came first. The residential then proceeded over several years.

Cheers
Tony

I stumbled across this link recently (http://www.kooringalgolf.co...) which has easy an link to the course Masterplan. Can anyone give me an update on the progress of the master plan at Kooringal ? Also is there many other clubs that make their master plan so readily available as this one is ?

14th Yarrambat

4th Dunes

Tony - Of these holes listed is it possible to get your original drawings for each of these holes. As I feel that we all would find it interesting to get your original thought process via your drawings. Then we can compare on how is actually turned out in a playable state once it was constructed.

Thanks.

Hi guys

I was interested in seeing what others said before I coloured the stream. Well, here goes: (and some of these holes may not be in good 'presentation'/condition now, but represent my satisfaction at the time of their making): I've only used Australian courses many of you know.

Two lists

(is that OK?)

1. 13th Beach - Beach
2. 13th Beach - Beach
3. 13th Beach - Creek
4. Dunes
5. Henley
6. Forest Resort, Creswick (just shaped)
7. 13th Beach - Beach
8. Melton
9. Henley
10. Henley
11. 13th Beach - Beach
12. Dunes
13. Henley
14. 13th Beach - Creek
15. Bright
16. 13th Beach - Creek
17. Henley
18. Yarrambat (original)

2nd 18

1. Melton
2. Dunes
3. Dunes
4. Kew
5. Dunes
6. Metropolitan (revisions)
7. Kingswood
8. Goonawarra
9. 13th Beach - Creek
10. Bright
11. Henley
12. Henley
13. Dunes
14. Dunes
15. Forest Resort, Creswick (just finished shaping)
16. 13th Beach - Beach
17. Dunes
18. 13th Beach - Beach

Bloody hard question, Horato: lots got left out!

Tony

Good work Cashy. No doubt it was a difficult job. A question for you as the eighteenth hole is often the benchmark that we judge courses on. As it is the most recent memory of the course we just played. Why does Yarrambat 18th make the list ? As I played it recently and found it be a good hole but not a great one. Also what do you mean by 'original' how does it differ today from the original construction/ design ?

Given that the course is located well enough out of town to be quite regional, and therefore won't likely be mixed up in perennially hosting major events, I wonder why on earth they determined that retirees and lifestylers wanted a 6600m course blink.gif

I know that is just the card length off the tips, but some of that will have to be walked by the forward tee players. Barwon Heads has just lengthened about eight holes by building new back tees (none resulting in a longer walk for the rest of us), and is still measuring less than 5900m. Too short? I know I would rather play and stay there for a couple of days than 90-95% of the 6.5km crap tracks.

As usual Tithers you raised some fair points about the development. Why do they have a Par 4 that is 480m blink.gif I stumbled across the updated web site today which has a Hole by Hole Description and updated layout drawings. The link is http://www.eynesbury.com/ey...

Cheers,
RFS.

Played there today and was impressed with the conditions. Considering the current water restrictions in Melbourne. The greens were quick but not unplayable. My only gripe was the amount of bunkers that had been filled in from the original design\release phase. If they had all the bunkers which was supposed to be the course would be a lot higher in the annual Public course ratings.

Creswick to have Allenby touch

ROBERT Allenby strode the fairways of Creswick's Forest Resort golf course yesterday, taking his first steps into the world of course designing.

The international golfer said he was was excited to be branching out into a new area of golf, having teamed up with Cashmore Golf Design.

He is putting his own touches to the Creswick course, which is currently under development.

"It was great to get out on the course and use my imagination to make some subtle changes (to the design)," said Allenby, who created Australian golf history last summer by becoming the first player to achieve the Triple Crown.

"I was fortunate to walk all the holes. This is amazing for me. I'm a very proud Victorian so the fact that my first design project is here is extremely exciting.

"I have the utmost admiration for (designers) Tony and James Cashmore, and look forward to working with them to incorporate my experience and thoughts into the design. I believe the course will win international acclaim

and I'm extremely proud to be a part of this project."

The international standard golf course is expected to be completed in March 2008.

It is part of the larger Forest Resort development, a $200 million integrated resort and residential development featuring a $60 million Novotel hotel.

The existing golf course is being extended into new land to create a 72 par, 6300 metre course featuring natural vegetation and crafted waterways.

Allenby said the views at Forest Resort would be breathtaking when completed.

"It's such a picturesque spot. What we're creating here is something very special," he said.

"I can't wait until it's finished. It's going to be one of the best golf courses in Australia. The end product will be full of life. And not just human life, but bird life and wild life."

Allenby will carry Forest Resort's logo on his golf bag as part of a sponsorship deal.

Don't hold your breath awaiting a reply mate - this very question was asked on the first day of the Cashmore forum, and was deleted very quickly. I can't help but think they have something to hide.

I think that Cashy won an award in the 80's for his work on Goonawarra. It was awarded for its concept of deisgning a housing estate with a golf course enclosed within itself. But I am open to be corrected.

QUOTE: keeperofthegreen @ Mar 2 2006, 07:45 PM

Hello Sloth,
Agree with Tony that it is a good question but think it is important for golfers to know the costs associated as I love hearing golfers say "lets throw another bunker in over there"!!
I am in the golf course construction business and may be able to help with a guide to pricing.
There are precious few true sand belt courses that require no drainage in their bunkers in high rainfall areas. Most designers and owners/clubs insist on drainage installation in their specs.
Fairway and greenside are all the same as you want them to be playable at all times.
Yes it does depend on the size of the bunker. Bunker sand varies in Australia from free if you have a suitable sand onsite to $75 per tonne (or $110 per cubic metre roughly). Freight costs are the killer these days. Construction detail; eg tongues, size and depth also add to machinery hire and construction costs. Drainage materials and use of geo fabric materials add potentially huge amounts to construction costs.
As an example, I recently constructed a 180 sq metre greenside trap that conformed to the specs and cost;
Sand...54 cubes @ $35 = $1890. Machine hire to dig drainage and form the bunker...18 hours @ $85 = $1530. Drainage pipes and fittings...$500. Turf for surrounds was done as part of the project but would need 180 sq metres aprox @ $2.90 per sq = $522. Aprox total cost of $4,442. It must be stressed with due consideration to Tony's figure that this bunker was constructed as part of a 2 hole project and some costs were absorbed in other areas. But in my bidding processes the above figures were what I used on this particular bunker, which was one of twelve installed on this project. This means I got a good price on bulk sand for the whole job and machinery hire was absorbed into the overall project.
This is a guide only and when bidding for a job each bunker is taken on its merits. A proper scaled design and a good spec means that fairly accurate figures can be tallied.
It is true that there are as many variables as there are golf swings!!
I hope the above gives you a bit of a guide to the cost of a bunker.

Keeper.

Thanks very much Keeper. This was the answer I was after !

This is true what you said Rookie. However I was wondering about the cost varience between a clay belt course and a sand belt course. Cashy explained in part what I was after. The next part of my question what type of work would it take to make a grass bunker to a sand bunker apart from the Sand tongue.gif . Courses such as Craigieburn are full of these 'fake' bunkers and would interested if courses would install bunker with suitable drainage when building the course in the view of making sand bunkers later on ? Or would it involve all the work of a newly created bunker ?
