You pack of wimps: mittens, hand warmers, etc.

Just go and play golf. Some days are hot, some are cold.

This from the cockwomble who cancels rounds and stays indoors at the mere hint of forecast rain

And if it's dry enough to drag his cart driving backside out of the house on cold days, he tucks his pants into his pilled socks to stave off the winter chill

Wouldn't eating heat packs actually warm me up?

it would get you sick, and feverish, in which case you would feel the cold, ya cockwomble.

Soooo, back to the OP - mitts are a great investment, I keep forgetting to buy some each year, and then by the time I get my arse into gear, spring is upon us again and I forget for another year.

Thermals and layering as Deege says I find helps keep the cold at bay, to a certain degree.

If you are worried about winter golf in Melbourne you should move to the northern states were there are no worries 😉

So are we talking about below 5 or 6 degrees Celsius or a Melbourne winter of 15 degrees and a bit of cool breeze?
I find walking in winter with a beanie on and a light jumper is enough to keep me warm except when it’s below zero and the frost is still thick on the ground.

One thing for sure is that if your hands are full of heatpacks and in mittens it is very difficult to cockwomble.

There have been a few times last year where the temp stayed below 7 for the entire round, the the round concluding at around 12:30 ish.

Tee-off is usually closer to 1-2 degrees.

If you have good layers of clothing and it’s not raining the idea is to have enough on not to impede your swing. If you feel the cold and need gloves or mittens the heat packs might be the best way to keep your hands warm. I find once I get walking my hands warm up a bit but if I ride in a cart then I don’t warm up as much and would then use those pocket warmers to try and keep my hands warm.
A couple courses up this way have signs out reminding players to knock the frost off their shoes before walking on the green or play will be delayed when it’s frosty.
