SO that is what it is called Sandbagging! When I play quite well one game and almost break 90 , then next game I am struggling to avoid 100+, I thought it was just lack of skill, lack of concentration and poor physical conditioning.

Sand bagging .... Yank term
Cheating low life fornicating punts... can't use the word I want... Aussie term

I know exactly what you mean, at the end of my round on the weekend Weets was marking my card and he asked if I had a 5 on the last as he was about to write that down. I told him that I had a 6, but the way I was going it would have been very easy to just say 'yep' and move along.

Maybe he was just testing you

I've played a round with an Iseeker who insisted on getting a free drop out of a roo print when he was in the bunker.

Despite his ranting and railing, a
nd quite honestly, open bullying, my friends and I stood our ground and did not give in.

I even got footgage of the event if anyone was interested in watching....

Under new rules the player could have elected to take a drop outside bunker for fewer shots than he had here.

not a bad option

He didn't say anything earlier when I'd said 4 after a 5, so you're probably right. He just didn't want to call me out, he good like that

I gotta say, it doesn't happen often but if I move the ball when moving a leaf or whatever or on the green, my first rather shameful impulse is to not call a penalty on myself because I know that I can get away with it.  I am just a mid handicap golfer and my evil homer tells me that it doesn't really matter.  I hope that the good homer always wins out (and I can't recall an instance where it hasn't), but it would sometimes be super easy for me to cheat a little and my first base and most natural instinct is to do so.

Some courses have a local rule permitting a drop out of 'roo prints.

I'm sure there would be things like replacing the ball further in front of your marker, taking your stance in a way that gets some branches or grass out of the way of your swing, thing like that where you're not deliberately cheating but not thinking about what you're doing critically.

I played with a guy one day and he consistently marked his ball by sliding his marker underneath it as he lifted the ball. Then he would 'replace' the ball two inches in front. I asked him "Do you really think two inches closer is going to help you each time?" He was most indignant that I'd picked him up on it, obviously thinking that no-one would notice. He stopped doing it, but his putting didn't improve.

As for moving branches out of the way, you can fairly take your stance, even backing in to position. But what is fair? We all try and alleviate problems where possible.

I am aware there have been numerous times that Members at our Club have approached the incumbent Captain to report an instance of cheating they have allegedly witnessed, only to decline to report it in writing so that the Board could investigate.

Then there are the serial pot-hunters who regularly pad their handicaps prior to honour board events. A Match and Greens decision to arbitrarily reduce the handicap of one such cheat resulted in him threatening legal action which seems to be the way of our litigious world today. Didn't do him any good, but it only took a few months to get all the shots back, and then some, prior to his next honour board conquest. Yep, he won again - his hide could replace Kevlar!

It appears that would even be too much with a swing like that. Yeah, the roo print was the problem.
