Hi All,

I am a golf coach based in Brisbane and I am wanting to know your thoughts regarding online golf instruction.

There is obviously a huge amount of content already available....

but what would you need in order to feel you have a golf coach online as opposed to generic swing tips...

Cheers,

Happy Golfing

Complimentary tea or coffee before the lesson. The nice ones offer a biscuit as well.

I have been watching Mark Crossfield on Youtube with his Journey Students and reckon it would be somewhere along those lines.

For me a coach that would have "SMS" access for selected students and then regular Q&A sessions for subscribers. For selected students, having introduction vids and then vids discussing their swings, goals and plan of action with drill recommendations would help.

At the end of the process a genuine assessment from the students on how they fwlt the process went and what the results were.

Rinse and repeat for the next batch of selected students.

Thanks for the great feedback on this topic 12 shoc! How often would you want a personalised video from your online coach?

Reckon a fortnightly/monthly sessions would be what you would look for. It was on the "Journey" Series on Youtube, but that included face-to-face time using GC Quad. (Definitely worth a look for yourself for ideas too.)

Reckon for video sessions it may well be fortnightly vids to give the student time to work on recommendatiosn and have enough time to get a feel for changes and provide feedback.

PS. Depending on location of student I would definitely look at the opportunity for a couple of face to face sessions too.

Reckon for it to work though you would need commitment from the student possibly a 3 month or even 6 month program.

I have never watched a coaching or swing tip vid.
I prefer lessons with a coach. Face to face so chat and feed back is instantaneous.
And have a playing lesson too.
My course management is sooooo boring but it works.

In my humble opinion there are (think of a huuuugely massive number) of choppers who look for golf nirvana on youtube.
And guess what?
It's not there.

It's in having paid lessons with a coach that your happy with.
Sticking to the lesson plan with out deviation no matter how bad it gets.
And practicing the right stuff.
Discipline.

I guess it's way easier to jump on your lap top
Google some stuff do a quick "yeah that's my problem" and off you go.

The number of blokes who say "I had a lesson but it didn't help so I went back to what I did before" And that'd be over what 2 or 3 games.
Well guess what it didn't work before you had your lesson and still doesn't.
That's why your still off what you're off.

I remember playing with a bloke who like lots of players struggle in bunkers, I said to him after numerous rants and expletives "have you thought about just having a bunker lesson?"
His reply "nah waste of time the bunkers are farrked here"
That's the mentality your dealing with.

My coach has an app that you can use for distance coaching.
It's on my phone but have never used it.

I guess I'm lucky I have found a good coach who I get on with, he understands I'm a feel player and he knows I will do the home work.
Been nearly I don't know 8 years now. Been as high as 12 and as low as 6.7
He's awesome.

Played with him at his home track last Monday
National old course.
Boom!

Get a decent coach (or not) and reap the benefits (on line or not)
Good luck Coach

Hi All,

I am a golf coach based in Brisbane and I am wanting to know your thoughts regarding online golf instruction.

There is obviously a huge amount of content already available....

but what would you need in order to feel you have a golf coach online as opposed to generic swing tips...

By 'online golf instruction' are you thinking / talking:

  • the tips, content, ideas, drills, etc that one can 'self diagnose' and then put into action, or
  • a personalised coaching / instruction program delivered using modern tech (i.e. video analysis, skype / phone discussion, e-mail updates with video of drills to do etc.)

Two very different 'products', IMHO.

Plenty of 'content' already out there (as you note) in the first category.

A few golf coaches have set up to do the second .... US based, that golfWRX forum has some regulars mentioned. Monte, Malaska, 'iTeach' (Dan someone), etc (and then there is that "rotary golf swing" stuff and the like) ... but, I haven't seen too many here in Oz offering that type of service.

I approach golf improvement along the same lines as Kiwi has detailed (i.e. lesson with golf pro, do the work, drills, etc, go back and get another lesson). As he eluded, the issue is the golfer seeing value in paying for advice and then seeing value in paying for said advice.

I like the Crossfield "journey" approach 12shoc mentioned ... I think golfers would get a lot more out of lessons with that style of approach here in Oz. I've used a similar approach, with swing lesson and playing lesson and then follow up swing lessons. Helped the pro understand me more playing a round together and it's helped frame his approach to working with me and also help confirm my thoughts on the parts of my game I need to work on.

I'm keen to hear what you are thinking / planning and end up doing. Keep us posted.

Now you would have a Chinese coach in two minds.  One half would be very happy, the other would avoid you like the plague.  Sort of like Ghetto and hmmmm, is Littleman chinese??
