The decision makes a joke of the NRL's stance on shoulder charges.... because it's Billy Slater's last game we will let him play otherwise Cam Smith will hand in his ref's card....

It was a shoulder charge .....simples
According to rules he should be suspended... simples

I’m not sure how the judiciary deciding he didn’t have a charge to answer somehow constitutes the Storm rorting the system.

Should never have got to the judiciary.  Gerard Sutton decided it was an illegal tackle and awarded a penalty.  The tackle was made in the act of scoring a try which constitutes a professional foul.  He should have been given 10 in the sin bin and that would have been the end of it.  Sutton got it wrong..... again....

As for the tackle...IMHO the shoulder was used in the tackle...BUT it was not a true shoulder charge where the leading arm is locked into the side and the off arm is crossed over the lead arm to hold it tight for impact.  Once again IMO Billy got off because his right arm was point of first contact with Feki, followed by the left shoulder which was braced for impact.  When the shoulder charge rule was amended last year, they forgot to put in the term.." the arms must be used in a wrapping motion".  IF that had of remained in the meaning of a shoulder charge... Billy was in trouble.

Not sticking up for Slater in any way shape or form, but he put forward a pretty solid defense on his behalf.  Feki did alter course slightly away from the touch line and lowered his right shoulder to brace for what he knew was coming.  Billy says he had to adjust as well.  Any of you guys ever tried to change your positioning for a tackle in less than .3 of a second when running at full speed.  It aint that easy.

As brilliant a player as he is, he gets away with a fair bit in the scheme of things when it comes to some of his tackles.  He was the master of sliding in with his feet when opposition players were going in to score a try.  Outlawed.  When jumping for a high ball, he would extend the leg not used for pushing off toward the oncoming tacklers, generally at a height that would impact with the upper chest or head.. Outlawed.  Like most things Melbourne in the tackling stakes, they push to the very limit of legality.  They are coached that way and they do it better than any other side in the comp.

Like I said, if Sutton had of done what the rule book calls for... we would not be having this discussion.

And there endeth the sermon.

Great read and interpretation Commish.

I've heard that Slater's defence was that his first point of contact (shown from the front / deadball side) was actually his pectoral area, don't see it myself, but it worked for him.
