Hi There,

My putting stroke is an arc.

I have  tried everything to get it straighter... I can literally feel I am taking it outside the line....no change...I have even use blocks of wood and can still get an arc..(first image is mine)

I then get friends on my machine and they are straight or very close to...urghhh drives me nuts..(see attachments - I could not find a straighter one but some people were right on the line - back and through)

I know there is the arc stroke and straight back and straight through SBST. Each will have merits.

What can I do to get it straight - there must something I am missing. I trying not to open and close....but urghhhhhhhh.

I would just like the option to be able to do so I can see if it is better for results - I would assume STSB is better for consistency and accuracy ...

Thanks

Rusty .......

What you have there my friend is a toe hang blade style putter. These are designed specifically for the toe to turn over through the stroke, and work best with an arc path.

Trying to get them to go sbst, is like asking a kid not to like icecream …. it just doesn't work …. without some operator manipulation during the stroke, and that's not good for consistency.

If you hold the putter up horizontally, and find its balance point on a finger, while its balanced on your finger … see where the toe of the clubface points. The more it points down towards the ground , the more toe hang is has (and the more arc you should putt with).

A mallet style putter on the other hand is more likely to be face balanced (when you do that test again, its face points to the sky). These are more suited to a sbst stroke, so ideally, you want to match the putter to the style of stroke you wish to put on the ball.

Just my 2 cents worth …..  ;)

Why do you say that? I think it would take a very complex shoulder and elbow action to achieve a STSB stroke.

I've seen Dave Pelz explain how to achieve a STSB stroke but as far as I know it is a pretty rare thing in practice.

Hi I have a face balanced putter - to confuse even more... forgot that part..  I feel more it get it straighter I have to manipulate hands which is wrong and feels wrong.... Those people with straighter arcs where using my putter..

seems I should have a toe-hang putter? cheers

I'm not really up on these things but I can't see why a face balanced putter would favour any particular type of stroke.  I would have thought that the main effect of the balancing would be that the putter face would not turn when the wrists accelerate the putter. That would seem to be a good thing for everybody.

That said I'm sure I get some feedback from the putter head wanting to open and close during the stroke.

You're self diagnosing your putting stroke and prescribing your own cure based on your diagnosis?

Isn't that what just about everyone does?

I doubt it.

If your not consistent, then you should get someone to check your aim first. Most of the time it's the aim is off when people struggle witht their putting.
