Are these guys smart and playing the clubs that they like the most in stead of being locked into a specific club supplier?

Or just hard to find sponsorship?

Brooks Koepka won the 2018 U.S. Open, Tommy Fleetwood was the runner-up after shooting a final-round 63 and Patrick Reed finished fourth … and none of them has a golf equipment endorsement. Each of them also has at least one Nike club in his bag, even though the company stopped making clubs and balls nearly two years ago. Fleetwood still uses Nike fairway woods and irons, while Koepka uses an old Nike driving iron and Reed plays a Nike 3-wood. Here is all the gear Koepka used to defend his U.S. Open title:
  • DRIVER: TaylorMade M4 (9.5 degrees), with Mitsubishi Diamana D+ 70 TX shaft
  • FAIRWAY WOOD: TaylorMade M2 Tour HL (16.5 degrees), with Mitsubishi Diamana D+ 80 TX shaft
  • IRONS: Nike Vapor Fly Pro (3), with Fujikura Pro 95 Tour Spec shaft; Mizuno JPX-900 Tour (4-PW), with True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shafts, PW with True Temper Dynamic Gold S400 shaft
  • WEDGES: Titleist Vokey Design SM7 Raw (52, 56 degrees), SM7 Raw TVD (60 degrees), with True Temper Dynamic Gold S400 shafts
  • PUTTER: Scotty Cameron T10 Select Newport 2 prototype
  • BALL: Titleist Pro V1x
  • GRIPS: Golf Pride Tour Velvet Cord Midsize

My guess is they are playing the clubs they want to able to play without being locked into a particular manufacturer ..... don't think money is a great concern for Brooks at present

Would sponsorship affect their access to the tour equipment vans? I’m guessing not in which case can understand why they might prefer to choose their own clubs.

I've heard Koepka is still being paid by Nike, as he signed with them just before they went out of the club side of the game. Best of both worlds for him, he gets to play whatever he wants, and still gets the cash.  If he signs a deal with anyone else his Nike deal stops.

Being a double Open winner would generate some $$$ so wonder if Nike is paying him enough that he doesnt need to move!

His Nike deal is likely just for apparel and the Swoosh on the golf bag.

There would be mega bucks in a club sponsorship deal, and who knows what Mizuno might be already shoving Brooks' way, although they are not noted big time sponsors. Reckon it might be a case of watch this space with him.

I don't know what the club deals were like at the time but I think Nicklaus used the same 3 wood for 30 years.

Su Oh just changed her set of irons, from fitted PXG ( that didn't work with graphite shafts ) to Ping irons with Nippon steel. She made $50k or less ? with the PXG's over a 12 month period and missed a heap of cuts. The new Pings have been in the bag for acouple of months now and she's made afew hundred thousand dollars in no time at all with some very well placed finishes, go figure ?

Some of the big names don't want or can't get a full bag contract because they have odd clubs in their bag that they won't drop because of individual clubs in their bags ( eg SC putters ) for the matched set option. Alot of players might have a 10 piece deal that usually includes their irons and wedges. If you've taken notice lately of how many players are pulling a whatever big name headcover off a TM M1/M2/M3/M4 driver, then that will tell you how good TM's drivers are. For the pro's to use something that's not from their equipment sponsor is significant and worth looking at for the average club golfer !

Jon...

I think it's driven by the fact golf club manufacturers aren't throwing huge money at as many, so players, rather than get forced into using clubs they don't like for the few dollars they could get opt for clubs they can use to win and in turn increase other sponsorship opportunities.

Luke Donald re-tweeted the Brooks Koepka Mizuno story - Koepka is still being paid by Nike under the contract he signed with them for clubs, and will keep being paid until he signs a new club deal with someone else (prob when that nike deal expires)

The irons he's using, were specifically designed for him - but before Mizuno could sign him up, he signed with Nike - when they stopped making clubs Mizuno gave them to him and now has won back to back US Opens with them.
