OB
Suppose the players were just given a few principles and told go and play.

Well that would be fine for a social experience.

But for Competition players would need to constantly interpret the principles as they played, getting a range of interpretations.

How can you possibly compare the performance of players in the competition in such a situation.

Commenting on your posts seems quite pointless.

Golf is very different to every other sport, starting with playing it in vast fields, not a specified and groomed court. And don't forget that players are mostly their own umpires.

Sailing is a sport involving mass starts on a "court"  that can be quiet and calm or which can be rough and lumpy.  I doubt if many races would be completed if they worked on no more than the principle, say, that boats should  avoid collisions.

At the very least, taken with a great many grains of salt.

Many posts are just an OBB and don't offer anything constructive.

Point taken Colin, and I know nothing of the rules for sailing competitions. Do their rules limit sailors to a few specific options if they hit a patch of seaweed, or is appropriate action just up to the boat captain?
