Webb Simpson on the 17th rolls across the green and drops off the other side - entering the hazard from the green

Why can’t he drop on the green no nearer the hole rather than go to the drop zone?

Don’t worry - I have worked out that it’s not a lateral water hazard so that option isn’t available

An option that would be available is to drop on the far side of the hole. Unless the committee has prevented that in the Tournament Rules.
Might be a slight possibility for playing to a pin close to the front of the green. On the other hand the slope of the green could negate any advantage.
I imagine it would take a lot of time.
Seeing it is some type of wedge for these players most of the time from the tee, stroke and distance or the dropping zone seem logical.
