Generally private enterprise can run services more efficiently than the state.

In accepting that an organisation needs to be 'capable' to run anything. NSW state has had very poor management of services in the past (often to the point that NOTHING happened), some services have recently been improved with private enterprise, others have improved purely because a more effective government is in power - it's all relative to the ability of those call the shots.

I was chatting to a dear friend this week. He is a former union "Heavyweight" I say heavy weight because he is podgey around the middle. He was pretty high up at the state level and ran a lot of rallies, not to dissimilar to the Change the Rulers one.

He is an interesting chap and had a lot of stores of the union days gone by and the rallies that he organised and the job sites he shut down. He, in a lot of aspects is very much the same as Alex Jones, the American radio host. He had a character that he played for the masses with his swearing and is threats and generally just acting to fire up the troops so to speak. He wasn't like that at home and he would opine that a lot of the gusto and bluster was hard work because he really didn't believe in the extreme views he was espousing and knew the middle ground was where it needed to be for better long term prospects. I am off on a tangent already. We spoke for hours again this time because I hadn't seen him for many years, I was with him that long that I was getting the text messages from my wife suggesting I hurry up and come home. One story he said was that they successfully got a building site shut down because the sparkies on site wanted a separate fridge for their lunches than the painters. This was a child care site.

One of the things that stuck with me from our conversation was how he lamented how easy it was to organise a rally, a rile up the masses then sit in his office for the next few months to wait to rinse and repeat.

He mentioned about the big march that happened earlier this year and asked me if I have seen anything from anyone to follow that up or to use that momentum for anything positive for any worker anywhere?

I told him of two examples where young friends of my grandsons had just been given pay rises after that had completed further studies, but they are in non-unionised private consulting firm so that was to be expected.

Other than that, nothing. This parade with their flags and their singing, what has it done?

Phil is my idol
