This week, golf fans around the world are reminded of the dramatic theatre an island golf green can create for a professional tournament.

The PGA Tour's Players Championship returns to its regular host venue, TPC Sawgrass in Florida, which is best known for its treacherous par-3 17th hole which sometimes plays barely more than 110 metres but is surrounded by water.

But how would a hole like this at your local golf course make you feel? Would it be too intimidating and detract from the overall experience? Or would you be proud if your golf club's course boasted such a unique feature?

Question: Would you like an island green at your local course?

I love the theatre of the 17th at the Players.

The only one I've experienced is the 18th at Hidden Valley...it's a knee trembler but lots of fun. The sort of hole you could set up with a deck chair and an esky and just watch for the whole day.

See Mouldy, you're doing it wrong.

When people mention island greens, this is what they're referring to.

It's not about hitting an island when you're aiming at a green

It is fun watching them spin off the front of the 17th at TPC. I agree with Goldy (phrase not often cited on this forum)- the only one I recall playing is Hidden Valley which I enjoy.

I think for the average club there needs to be some margin of error or escape route to allow a bail out to encourage all levels of ability. By all means make most of the green inaccessible by anything other than air but ensure there is a land bridge up the side to bail out.

Played there last weekend.

The 9th is a 125m carry par 3, with a front bunker (sniggle). Not quite as intimidating but still a heck of a lot of fun playing them.
Because some idiots complain that my sig is too large:

Booked in to play in October, will let you know what I think of it after that... as it stands I like the all or nothing concept but I'm nervous about fluffing one, that said if I do that I'll take a mulligan or 2 :)

If we had a hole like that at our Club, we would never finish a round!
