Hi,

I have started to look into joining a golf club. The only decent courses I have played in Sydney (NSW, St Michaels and Concord) all fall outside my primary criteria which is 30 mins from my house in the Chatswood area.

I have read some of the "Avondale vs Pymble vs Killara" and the where should I play "Elanora or Avondale or Terrey Hills" posts but they seem to be a bit older and I wonder if things have changed significantly.

I'm going to judge on:

- Proximity (30 mins)

- Quality of course (do I like it/do I want to play it often)

- Openness of club (I will know no one so I need the club/members to be welcoming to new members)

- Path for juniors for my kids should they continue to play (too young to join at the moment but keen)

- Business (I don't want it to be too busy that I can't get a game or 5+ hours when I do get a game)

Any thoughts – advice appreciated before I start progressing.

I have nothing to offer as far as course options go, but would add practice facilities to your selection criteria.

While you can access a range for driver and irons, a course with a good short game practice facility will help you improve. Putting practice once a week on greens similar to the course is useful. Doing chip n runs onto greens of similar pace and hardness also helpful. Sand practice from bunkers with similar grain, compaction, depth etc. is also valuable.

Good luck.

30 mins from Chatswood will limit your options, whilst Melbourne has the sand belt, you are dead centre of the Sydney shite belt.

No indication on how old you are but most clubs are looking for members, sub 35 they will give you a discount.

Killara are doing a reno, they will lose members, post they will be looking.

Most clubs have a decent junior programme

Terrey Hills.
Great practice facilities, always get a game, pretty quiet most afternoons

40s so no discount for me. Appreciate that the courses around here are not as good as Melbourne, I'd be spoiled for choice there...

Elanora, Avondale, Monash and Terrey Hills look to be the best options in 30min range in terms of course quality with top 100-ish rankings. Any other options or is that it?

From there it comes down to how busy they are, how open the clubs are, the path for juniors and the practice facilities. It's probably the busy view and openness that I most need advice on as the other stuff I can get when I start to sweep round and visit them.

You could do a lot worse than signing the kids up at Chatswood then joining the course of your choice for yourself. Avondale probably has the best juniors program but only average practice facilities.
Terrey Hills and Elanora are the best courses but TH is quieter and has probably the best practice facilities in Sydney.
Don’t need to know anyone at TH, just pay your money and your in

You can scratch the best course in Sydney, Elanora, off the list, if you don’t know anyone then you’ve got no chance of getting in.

If money is no object then Monash and Terrey Hills would be next down the list.

Yep any of those north shore courses might fit but as mentioned may be difficult to get in to if not knowing anyone.

Without knowing price range, inside 30 mins from Chatswood you might add to the list Ryde-Parramatta, or Concord, which is exclusive but now would be the time to get in while Tom Doak is renovating the place.  Lower down the batting order but very welcoming, albeit missing practise facilities is my old stomping ground North Ryde.

Obviously I don't want to needlessly spend money but about $20k joining fee would be the upper limit, average yearly subs seems to be <$5k which is acceptable.

He may wish to putt out which would mean he can't join the Country Club and play gimmies.

Pymble and Elanora require nominations by a member

Avondale and Terrey Hills fall into the "I can buy a car for their joining fee" category, but they probably fit your brief

Killara didn't really impress me

Monash would fit your criteria.

There's options like Manly, Bonnie Doon and Pennant Hills which are within a 30 min drive too.
