About a dozen years ago I was a guest at club called Whisper Rock in the Scottsdale area where Phil, among a heap of other Tour players, is a member.
After the game, our group joined Phil's and Gary McCord's to make up one big table in the men's grillroom. Whisper Rock is basically a men-only club which is privately owned by some super-wealthy guy, and apart from all the Tour players, most of the other members are very well-heeled individuals.(I was way out of my depth!)
Well, Phil was holding court and is apparently an expert on everything - which probably accounted for his nickname of Figjam at the time. He wasn't boorishly overpowering, more just very confident and cocky....and I guess he has good reasons to be that way.
Doubt very much he will ever win the US Open, as he just does't hit it straight enough, and somehow always manages to conjure up some disaster. But, he has had one hell of a career, and inspite being labeled as insincere by many pros, he really does treat the fans well. Love the stories about his legendary tipping too!
