Maybe the question hasn't been asked for 30 years, or 9 years or even 1 year, because just maybe, if and when it did happen, the golfers at the time took the common sense approach of, 'The ball cannot be physically replaced in the same position if the LI is removed without it falling to the bottom of the cup, so logic concludes that the ball is holed'.

Had that of been me in that situation ........ I would have simply taken out my lighter, and set the twig ablaze ...... then just waited for the inevitable rattle of the ball hitting the bottom of the cup . no need to handle either ball or object, nor rules officials required ..... :)
